Most of the prediction theories regarding dissolution of organic contaminants in the subsurface systems have been proposed based on the static water conditions; and the influence of water fluctuations on mass removal requires further investigations. In this study, it was intended to investigate the effects of water table fluctuations on biogeochemical properties of the contaminated soil at the smear zone between the vadose zone and the groundwater table. An automated 60 cm soil column system was developed and connected to a hydrostatic equilibrium reservoir to impose the water regime by using a multi-channel pump. Four homogenized hydrocarbon contaminated soil columns were constructed and two of them were fully saturated and remained under static water conditions while another two columns were operated under water table fluctuations between the soil surface and 40 cm below it. The experiments were run for 150 days and relevant geochemical indicators as well as dissolved phase concentrations were analyzed at 30 and 50 cm below the soil surface in all columns. The results indicated significant difference in terms of biodegradation effectiveness between the smear zones exposed to static and water table fluctuation conditions. This presentation will provide an overview of the experimental approach, mass removal efficiency, and key findings.

The inlet and outlet of the aqueduct and the inverted siphon, standing a gradual transition linked to the channel, make water gradually change along the cross section of the gradual transition, to improve the water flow pattern. This paper aims to research the deformation of the gradual transition under the water load in static water conditions, to make ANSYS finite element analysis to the engineering gradual transition for preventing deformation, and finally to optimize the overall style design on the basis of its analysis. The developed techniques have been successfully used in designing the gradual transition of a practical aqueduct project. The results of this study on the gradual transition have strong theoretical and practical significance.

Time-lapse video was used to examine the effect of short- (19 h) and long-term (1 year) exposure to Al or Pb at neutral pH in static water conditions on the total distance moved by the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Aluminium at 100, 200, 500, or 1000 μg∙L−1 normally depressed and Pb at 50 and 200 μg∙L−1 often increased activity over the first 19 h of exposure. Smaller (younger) snails generally showed greater sensitivity to Al. Exposure to 100 or 500 μg Al∙L−1 for up to 30 days caused hyperactivity, but thereafter and 1 year later, activity was similar to controls, suggesting that the snails had become tolerant. Lead (200 μg∙L−1) caused continued hyperactivity for up to 50 days, although movement was significantly reduced after 1 year, suggesting that acclimation had occurred. The effect of Al is interesting given the supposed limited bioavailability of this metal at neutral pH.

Children with Rett Syndrome (RS) are reported to use multiple modalities to communicate although their intentionality is often questioned (Bartolotta, Zipp, Simpkins, & Glazewski, 2011; Hetzroni & Rubin, 2006; Sigafoos et al., 2000; Sigafoos, Woodyatt, Tuckeer, Roberts-Pennell, & Pittendreigh, 2000). This paper will present results of a study analyzing the unconventional vocalizations of a child with RS. The primary research question addresses the ability of familiar and unfamiliar listeners to interpret unconventional vocalizations as “yes” or “no” responses. This paper will also address the acoustic analysis and perceptual judgments of these vocalizations. Pre-recorded isolated vocalizations of “yes” and “no” were presented to 5 listeners (mother, father, 1 unfamiliar, and 2 familiar clinicians) and the listeners were asked to rate the vocalizations as either “yes” or “no.” The ratings were compared to the original identification made by the child's mother during the face-to-face interaction from which the samples were drawn. Findings of this study suggest, in this case, the child's vocalizations were intentional and could be interpreted by familiar and unfamiliar listeners as either “yes” or “no” without contextual or visual cues. The results suggest that communication partners should be trained to attend to eye-gaze and vocalizations to ensure the child's intended choice is accurately understood.
