Membrane-type acoustic metamaterials (MAMs) with negative dynamic mass have demonstrated the effects in the sound transmission loss (STL) at low-frequency range. This research aims to design a membrane-type acoustic metamaterial muffler (MAMM) based on the present MAMs, and to solve the problem that airflow cannot flow unimpededly in the channel once using the MAMs. For a better understanding of MAMM, the resonance frequency of the membrane was calculated and simulation was used to study the acoustic transmission performance of the MAMM. The simulation results were verified in comparison with the theoretical results of the membrane. This MAMM reduced the structural size of muffler compared with the traditional Helmholtz muffler and expand muffler, which can find application for the MAMs in acoustic absorption and noise control.

Membrane-type acoustic metamaterial (MAM) has exhibited superior sound isolation properties, as well as thin and light characteristics. However, the anti-resonance modes of traditional MAMs are generated intermittently in a wide frequency range causing discontinuities in the anti-resonance modes. Achieving broadband low-frequency sound attenuation with lightweight MAM design is still a pivotal research aspect. Here, we present a strategy to realize wide sound-attenuation bands in low frequency range by introducing the design concept of bionic configuration philosophy into the MAM structures. Built by a polymeric membrane and a set of resonators, two kinds of MAM models are proposed based on the insight of a spider web topology. The sound attenuation performance and physical mechanisms are numerically and experimentally investigated. Multi-state anti-resonance modes, induced by the coupling of the bio-inspired arrangement and the host polymer film, are systematically explored. Significant sound attenuation is numerically and experimentally observed in both the lightweight bio-inspired designs. Remarkably, compared with a traditional MAM configuration, a prominent enhancement in both attenuation bandwidth and weight-reduction performance is verified. In particular, the bio-inspired MAM Model I exhibits a similar isolation performance as the reference model, but the weight is reduced by nearly half. The bio-inspired Model II broadens the sound attenuation bandwidth greatly; meanwhile, it retains a lighter weight design. The proposed bio-inspired strategies provide potential ways for designing sound isolation devices with both high functional and lightweight performance.

Abstract To solve the problem of low-frequency noise control in ship cabins, a new membrane-type acoustic metamaterial (MAM) with bulges on the surface of thin films is designed based on the characteristics of lightweight and low-frequency sound insulation of membrane-type acoustic metamaterials. The sound structure coupling module of COMSOL multiphysical field coupling software is used to analyse the sound insulation performance of MAMs. The sound insulation properties of the additional mass film and self-similar fractal convex structure are further discussed. The metamaterial structure studied in this paper has a better sound insulation effect than ordinary film, which provides strong technical support for ship cabin noise control.

Purpose Membrane-type acoustic metamaterials (MAMs) recently have been emerged to display useful sound attenuation properties in a low-frequency regime. The purpose of this paper is to present an analytical approach to investigate the transmission loss (TL) of a square membrane-ring structure of MAM. The geometrical effects of ring mass on the TL peak and dip frequencies of the MAM are obtained and discussed. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, based on the wave propagation and vibration theory, considering the effects of ring mass and acoustic pressure on the membrane, an analytical model is presented to analyze acoustic response of MAM. Findings Multiple peak frequencies and wide bandwidth appear in the membrane-ring structure, and they can be tuned by changing the location or numbers of the ring mass on the membrane. It is a useful method for designing such type of metamaterial. Originality/value In this paper, an analytical method is presented to evaluate the effects of ring geometric on the TL performance of square membrane-type locally resonant metamaterial. It is proved that achieving broadband and multi-peak TL profile in a single cell can indeed happen by increasing additional ring mass. The TL and frequency bandwidth can be tuned by changing the location, adding numbers and varying mass distribution of the ring masses on the membrane.

Controlling infrasound signals is crucial to many processes ranging from predicting atmospheric events and seismic activities to sensing nuclear detonations. These waves can be manipulated through phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials. However, at such ultra-low frequencies, the size (usually on the order of meters) and the mass (usually on the order of many kilograms) of these materials can hinder its potential applications in the infrasonic domain. Here, we utilize tunable lattices of repelling magnets to guide and sort infrasound waves into different channels based on their frequencies. We construct our lattices by confining meta-atoms (free-floating macroscopic disks with embedded magnets) within a magnetic boundary. By changing the confining boundary, we control the meta-atoms’ spacing and therefore the intensity of their coupling potentials and wave propagation characteristics. As a demonstration of principle, we present the first experimental realization of an infrasound phonon demultiplexer (i.e., guiding ultra-low frequency waves into different channels based on their frequencies). The realized platform can be utilized to manipulate ultra-low frequency waves, within a relatively small volume, while utilizing negligible mass. In addition, the self-assembly nature of the meta-atoms can be key in creating re-programmable materials with exceptional nonlinear properties.

Membrane-type acoustic metamaterials are thin films or plates composed of periodic units with small additional mass. A large number of studies have shown that these metamaterials exhibit tunable anti-resonance, and their transmission loss values are much higher than the corresponding quality laws. At present, most researches on membrane-type acoustic metamaterials focus on the unit cell, and the sound insulation frequency band can only be adjusted by adjusting the structural parameters and material parameters. In this paper, two kinds of acoustic metamaterials with different structures are designed, which are the center placement of the mass and the eccentric placement of the mass. The two structures have different sound insulation characteristics. By designing different array combinations of acoustic metamaterials, the sound insulation peaks of different frequency bands are obtained. This paper studies the corresponding combination law, and effectively realizes the adjustable sound insulation frequency band.
