We present a study of the membrane and shear locking behavior in an isoparametric curved beam element. The objective is to gain insight into the locking phenomenon, specially membrane locking, of continuum based degenerated shell elements. This is possible since the isobeam element is the one-dimensional analogue of the continuum based shell element. In this context, reduced integration and mixed interpolation schemes are briefly examined. Such a study can be a valuable aid when developing new shell elements.

High injection pressure resin transfer moulding is a variant of resin transfer moulding in which the preform is compressed in a tool and resin is injected into the mould under very high pressure. The high injection pressure (>20 bar) introduces possible fibre washout that translates into manufacturing defects or causes inconsistencies in processing and leads to scatter in mechanical properties of composite parts. A model is presented which quantifies and provides insight into the influence of process variables such as clamping force and injection pressure on fibre washout distance (the one-dimensional model assumes a rigid preform). A generalised one-dimensional stress model for fibre washout is presented for regions that are impregnated with the resin and the regions that are dry. The model shows fibre washout to be significant at the beginning of the injection process. The model allows one to further refine the injection strategy by adjusting injection pressure to account for washout in high injection pressure resin transfer moulding.


Study of the one-dimensional polymer chain provides insight into the nature of two-and three-dimensional models. The generalized Green’s functions associated with the Domb-Joyce diagrammatic expansion in one dimension are classified and methods for determining their exact contributions are developed. The existence of confluent subdominant singularities is demonstrated in all dimensions. Exact and asymptotic results to second order are presented.

This research represents a detailed insight into the modern and popular hybridization of deterministic chaotic dynamics and evolutionary computation. It is aimed at the influence of chaotic sequences on the performance of four selected Differential Evolution (DE) variants. The variants of interest were: original DE/Rand/1/ and DE/Best/1/ mutation schemes, simple parameter adaptive jDE, and the recent state of the art version SHADE. Experiments are focused on the extensive investigation of the different randomization schemes for the selection of individuals in DE algorithm driven by the nine different two-dimensional discrete deterministic chaotic systems, as the chaotic pseudorandom number generators. The performances of DE variants and their chaotic/non-chaotic versions are recorded in the one-dimensional settings of 10D and 15 test functions from the CEC 2015 benchmark, further statistically analyzed.

We present an analogy between the one dimensional Poisson equation in inhomogeneous media and the Dirac equation in one space dimension with a Lorentz scalar potential for zero energy. We illustrate how the zero energy state in the Jackiw-Rebbi model can be implemented in a simple one dimensional electrostatic setting by using an inhomogeneous electric permittivity and an infinite charged sheet. Our approach provides a novel insight into the Jackiw-Rebbi zero energy state and provides a helpful way to visualize and teach this important quantum field theory model using basic electrostatics.

The synaptic connections in cat retina that link photoreceptors to ganglion cells have been analyzed quantitatively. Our approach has been to prepare serial, ultrathin sections and photograph en montage at low magnification (˜2000X) in the electron microscope. Six series, 100-300 sections long, have been prepared over the last decade. They derive from different cats but always from the same region of retina, about one degree from the center of the visual axis. The material has been analyzed by reconstructing adjacent neurons in each array and then identifying systematically the synaptic connections between arrays. Most reconstructions were done manually by tracing the outlines of processes in successive sections onto acetate sheets aligned on a cartoonist's jig. The tracings were then digitized, stacked by computer, and printed with the hidden lines removed. The results have provided rather than the usual one-dimensional account of pathways, a three-dimensional account of circuits. From this has emerged insight into the functional architecture.

The relation between authoritarianism and social dominance orientation was analyzed, with authoritarianism measured using a three-dimensional scale. The implicit multidimensional structure (authoritarian submission, conventionalism, authoritarian aggression) of Altemeyer’s (1981, 1988) conceptualization of authoritarianism is inconsistent with its one-dimensional methodological operationalization. The dimensionality of authoritarianism was investigated using confirmatory factor analysis in a sample of 713 university students. As hypothesized, the three-factor model fit the data significantly better than the one-factor model. Regression analyses revealed that only authoritarian aggression was related to social dominance orientation. That is, only intolerance of deviance was related to high social dominance, whereas submissiveness was not.

This article is about the practice of territorial governance emerging at the junction of European Union-sanctioned ideals and Romanian development-planning traditions. On the one hand, the European agenda emphasises a smart, inclusive, sustainable model of economic growth. However, the persisting centralised workings of the Romanian state significantly alters the scope of regional interventions. As such, while core cities grew their economies swiftly, peripheral places were left in an unrelenting stagnation. My first aim is to provide a theoretical ground for a practicecentred approach to understanding territorial governance. Second, by drawing on Romania’s regional policy context as an example, I give an insight into how practices of partnership and competition fare in a context of ongoing territorial polarisation. I conclude by emphasising the need for a regional redistributive policy mechanism, one which should enable and assist non-core areas to access capacities for defining and implementing development projects.
