Two general classes of light-evoked responses were recorded intracellularly from the retina of Strombus luhuanus. In one class, retinal illumination caused depolarization, the amplitude of which was graded with light intensity. In the other, it produced hyperpolarization and concomitant inhibition of repetitive action potentials. There were two types of depolarizing waveform. Each was associated with a different type of intraccllular recording site, characterized on the basis of electrical properties in the dark. In general, the type of response with a more rapid rate of decay was recorded from a site which exhibited a lower resting potential, higher input resistance, and longer ‘membrane charging time.’ The two depolarizing responses and the hyperpolarizing response apparently each arose from a different type of neurone. The depolarizing types, at least one of which is a photoreceptor, apparently give rise to the cornea-negativity of the electroretinogram and ‘on’ activity in the optic nerve fibres. The hyperpolarizing type apparently mediates ‘off’ activity in the optic nerve.

Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk menganalisis asosiasi dan relung mikrohabitat gastropoda pada ekosistem hutan mangrove di Pulau Sibu Kecamatan Oba Utara Kota Tidore Kepulauan Provinsi Maluku Utara. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan pada saat air surut dengan menggunakan metode line transect. Hasil penelitian diperoleh komposisi jenis-jenis gastropoda di Pulau Donrotu sebanyak 12 jenis yaitu Littrorina scabra, Littorina undulata, Turbo agryrostoma, Turbo chrysostoma, Turbo breneus, Nerita costata, Nerita planospira, Strombus luhuanus,, Cerithiidea cingulata, Telescopium telescopium, Telebralia sulcata dan Terebralia palustris. Pasangan jenis gastropoda yang diperoleh memiliki tipe asosiasi positif sebanyak 14 pasangan, asosiasi negatif sebanyak 11 pasangan  dan tidak ada asosiasi sebanyak 42 pasangan. Jenis gastropoda yang mempunyai relung habitat terlebar adalah Terebralia sulcata dan tersempit adalah Turbo chrysostomus.

Following amputation of the eye of Strombus luhuanus, a morphologically equivalent one is regenerated. Early regenerates exhibited a relatively simple, single-peaked electroretinogram (ERG) that progressively matured to display two ‘on’ peaks, a ‘steady state’ during sustained illumination, and repetitive ‘off’ potentials. ERGs of regenerates were dependent on stimulus intensity, wavelength, light adaptation and temperature, as are those of mature eyes. Intracellularly recorded light-evoked depolarizations from retinas of early stages of regeneration tended to be simpler in waveform than those of more mature stages. In addition, certain cells exhibited light-evoked and electrically evoked action potentials, while others were hyperpolarized by light. Optic nerves of eyes in early stages of regeneration showed only ‘on’ activity, while those of later stages also exhibited ‘off’ responses.
