The experiments show that rapid and effective sterilization of atmospheres containing atomized particles of influenza and vaccinia viruses, and probably also of herpes simplex virus, can be obtained by ultra-violet radiation of wave-length 2537 A. At least 99 % and probably more of an aerosol of influenza virus was killed by exposure for 6 sec. at. a distance of 2 cm. from either a Hanovia lamp or a G.E.C. ‘Sterilamp’. These findings confirm the work of Wells and his associates who first demonstrated the susceptibility of this virus to ultra-violet radiation (Wells & Brown, 1936; Wells & Henle, 1941). At the same distance the ‘Sterilamp’ produced more than a 99 % kill of vaccinia virus with an exposure of 1 sec. and about a 90 % kill in 0·5 sec. The experiments with herpes were less satisfactory but suggested a similar sensitivity. These results support the view that ‘germicidal’ lamps are likely to be useful in reducing the infectivity of air contaminated with particles from persons suffering from virus infections of the respiratory tract.We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the late Sir Patrick Laidlaw who, although his name does not appear as author, largely inspired the investigation and took an active part in it until his death.

A 62-year-old woman treated with several courses of corticosteroids for an undifferentiated rash came to the emergency department with progressively worsening cutaneous signs and symptoms and generalized weakness. She had scabies, and despite treatment continued to decompensate. Repeat skin biopsies revealed disseminated herpes simplex virus infection, and results of blood cultures were consistent with infection by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Despite antiviral and antimicrobial therapy, sepsis and multiorgan failure developed, and the patient died. This case illustrates the complications of the rare entity eczema herpeticum, which occurs most often in immunocompromised patients and is associated with a high mortality. Maintaining a high index of suspicion for this disease in decompensating patients with an unidentified rash is essential to avoid catastrophic outcomes.

Preparation of nano sized silver particles was performed by using flower extract of Aerva javanica (AJ). Conversion of Ag+ ions to nanoscaled Ago was carried out in 90 min reaction by green approach. Antiviral potential of nanosilver (NS) was evaluated against Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) strain H9N2, in 9-11 days old chicken embryonated eggs. Synthesized particles were also screened against four methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains by well diffusion method. Formation of spherical particles was confirmed by SPR band at 428 nm. XRD analysis confirmed face centred cubic crystal structure of particles with average particle size of 15 nm as calculated by Debye–Scherrer’s formula. Remarkable anti AIV activity was observed from NS particles with IC50 value 50 ?g/ml and this value is 200 times greater control drug i.e., Amantadine. Synthesized particles were also screened against four methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains by well diffusion method. Significantly high antiviral and antibacterial activities were observed from nanosilver particles against AIV H9N2 and all four MRSA strains.Keywords:
