A cooling tower assisted vapor compression refrigeration machine has been considered for optimization with multiple criteria. Two objective functions including the total exergy destruction of the system (as a thermodynamic criterion) and the total product cost of the system (as an economic criterion), have been considered simultaneously. A thermodynamic model based on the energy and exergy analyses and an economic model according to the Total Revenue Requirement (TRR) method have been presented. Three optimized systems including a single-objective thermodynamic optimized, a single-objective economic optimized and a multi-objective optimized are obtained. In the case of multi-objective optimization, an example of decision-making process for selection of the final solution from the Pareto frontier has been presented. The exergetic and economic results obtained for three optimized systems have been compared and discussed. The results have shown that the multi-objective design more acceptably satisfies generalized engineering criteria than other two single-objective optimized designs.

Developments in particle swarm algorithm since its origin along with its benefits and drawbacks are mainly discussed as particle swarm optimization provides a simple realization mechanism and high convergence speed. We discuss several developments for single-objective case problem and multi-objective case problem.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a qualitative framework for the selection of the most appropriate optimization algorithm for the multi-objective trade-off problem (MOTP) in construction projects based on the predefined performance parameters. Design/methodology/approach A total of 6 optimization algorithms and 13 performance parameters were identified through literature review. The experts were asked to indicate their preferences between each pair of optimization algorithms and performance parameters. A multi-criteria decision-making tool, namely, consistent fuzzy preference relation was applied to analyze the responses of the experts. The results from the analysis were applied to evaluate their relative weights which were used to provide a ranking to the algorithms. Findings This study provided a qualitative framework which can be used to identify the most appropriate optimization algorithm for the MOTP beforehand. The outcome suggested that non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) was the most appropriate algorithm whereas linear programming was found to be the least appropriate for MOTPs. Originality/value The devised framework may provide a useful insight for the construction practitioners to choose an effective optimization algorithm tool for preparing an efficient project schedule aiming toward the desired optimal improvement in achieving the various objectives. Identification of the absolute best optimization algorithm is very difficult to attain due to various problems such as the inherent complexities and intricacies of the algorithm and different class of problems. However, the devised framework offers a primary insight into the selection of the most appropriate alternative among the available algorithms.

Selection and assessment of mining equipment used in open pit rock mines relies chiefly on estimates of overall exploitation cost. The rational arrangement of mining equipment and systems comprising loading machines, haul trucks and crushing plants should be preceded by a thorough analysis of technical and economic aspects, such as investment outlays and the costs of further exploitation, which largely determine the costs of mining operations and the deposit value. Additionally, the operational parameters of the mining equipment ought to be considered. In this study, a universal set of evaluation criteria has been developed, and an evaluation method has been applied for the selection of surface mining equipment and the processing system to be operated in specific mining conditions, defined by the user. The objective of this study is to develop and apply the new methodology of multi-criteria selection of open pit rock mining equipment based on multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) procedures, to enable the optimization of loading, handling and crushing processes. The methodology, underpinned by the principles of MCDM, provides the dedicated ranking procedures, including the ELECTRE III. The applied methodology allows the alternative options (variants) to be ranked accordingly. Ultimately, a more universal methodology is developed, applicable in other surface mines where geological and mining conditions are similar. It may prove particularly useful in selection and performance assessment of mining equipment and process line configurations in mining of low-quality rock deposits. Therefore, we undertook to develop universal criteria and applications for the selection and performance assessment of process machines for surface mines, taking into account environmental aspects as well as deposit quality.

Abstract With the development of economy, more and more people travel by plane. Many airports have added satellite halls to relieve the pressure of insufficient boarding gates in airport terminals. However, the addition of satellite halls will have a certain impact on connecting flights of transit passengers and increase the difficulty of reasonable allocation of flight and gate in airports. Based on the requirements and data of question F of the 2018 postgraduate mathematical contest in modeling, this paper studies the flight-gate allocation of additional satellite halls at airports. Firstly, match the seven types of flights with the ten types of gates. Secondly, considering the number of gates used and the least number of flights not allocated to the gate, and adding the two factors of the overall tension of passengers and the minimum number of passengers who failed to transfer, the multi-objective 0–1 programming model was established. Determine the weight vector $w=(0.112,0.097,0.496,0.395)$ w = ( 0.112 , 0.097 , 0.496 , 0.395 ) of objective function by entropy value method based on personal preference, then the multi-objective 0–1 programming model is transformed into single-objective 0–1 programming model. Finally, a graph coloring algorithm based on parameter adjustment is used to solve the transformed model. The concept of time slice was used to determine the set of time conflicts of flight slots, and the vertex sequences were colored by applying the principle of “first come first serve”. Applying the model and algorithm proposed in this paper, it can be obtained that the average value of the overall tension degree of passengers minimized in question F is 35.179%, the number of flights successfully allocated to the gate maximized is 262, and the number of gates used is minimized to be 60. The corresponding flight-gate difficulty allocation weight is $\alpha =0.32$ α = 0.32 and $\beta =0.40$ β = 0.40 , and the proportion of flights successfully assigned to the gate is 86.469%. The number of passengers who failed to transfer was 642, with a failure rate of 23.337%.

This study proposes a two-sided matching decision-making (TSMDM) approach by combining the regret theory under the intuitionistic fuzzy environment. At first, according to the Hamming distance of intuitionistic fuzzy sets and regret theory, superior and inferior flows are defined to describe the comparative preference of subjects. Hereafter, the satisfaction degrees are obtained by integrating the superior and inferior flows of the subjects. The comprehensive satisfaction degrees are calculated by aggregating the satisfaction degrees, based on which, a multi-objective TSMDM model is built. Furthermore, the multi-objective TSMDM model is converted to a single-objective model, the optimal solution of the latter is derived. Finally, an illustrative example and several analyses are provided to verify the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
