This study combined the IA craft, and the goal is to achieve aerobic, anoxic and even anaerobic alternating cycles in the same reactor to enhance biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. At present, there are many studies on the IA process, but less research on the IAMBBR craft. The IAMBBR craft combines intermittent aeration with a biofilm process, which can further improve the processing capacity of a continuous-flow biofilm reactor. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a detailed study of the IAMBBR craft. In addition, the exposure time ratio is an important parameter for the operation of the IA craft. By adjusting the exposure time ratio, the DO concentration in the reactor can be controlled, which affects the operation effect of the reactor. Therefore, this chapter mainly explores the effect of exposure time ratio on the operating effect of IAMBBR. Six operating stages were connected: the ratio of CA and exposure time are 3h/3h, 1h/1h, 30min/30min, 15min/15min, and 5min/5min, respectively, to study the removal effect of pollutants.

Use of microalgae to remove inorganic nutrients from wastewater and their great potential for low-cost biomass production is gaining attraction. The effect of piggery wastewater content, aeration rate, cultivation temperature, and light intensity on nitrogen and phosphorus removal and biomass production were studied by using a Box-Behnken experimental design under full factorial methodology. Under experimental conditions considered cultures with aeration increased the ammonium and orthophosphate removal efficiency up to an average of 65.3±17 % and 51±7.2 %, respectively and an increase of biomass productivity ranging from 20.8±11 mg/L.d to 52.3±5.5 mg/L.d. The aeration rate was the most important factor influencing the nutrients removal and biomass production.

This study examines the effects of sludge retention time (SRT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) on COD, nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a combined activated sludge - biofilm process. Various SRT (5, 10, 12 and 15 days) and dissolved oxygen (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/l in aerobic stage) conditions are performed during the hybrid process. Experimental results indicate that SRT significantly affects the behavior of nitrogen and phosphorus removal, although the variation of COD removal is only slight in different SRT experiments. The SRT should be controlled for longer than 10 days to achieve efficient nitrogen removal. However, a SRT less than 12 days is deemed necessary to complete the phosphorus removal. The process displays similar characteristics when dissolved oxygen is operated between 1.0 to 2.0 mg/l in the aerobic stage. Moreover, analyzing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) reveals that phosphorus release and uptake are closely related to PHAs accumulation and utilization, respectively, during anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic stages of the process. The ratio of phosphorus uptake and PHAs utilized, rP/PHAs, denotes a dissimilar trend during anoxic and aerobic stages. The sludge has a high efficiency in utilizing PHAs for phosphorus uptake in anoxic stage when it is under lower COD-SS loading conditions. The value of rP/PHAs ranges from approximately 0.1 to 1.0 mg P/mg PHAs. In addition, experimental results also demonstrate that anoxic phosphorus uptake can improve phosphorus removal in biological nutrient removal processes.

This paper describes a research to use an innovative combined biological process, upflow sludge blanket filter (USBF), that rapidly and economically remove BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus from piggery wastewater. The USBF design is a continuous flow system incorporating the aeration zone, clarifier and anoxic zone into a single tank. The research showed a result of 97%, 80%, 94%, 90% and 85% for COD, BOD5, SS, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, respectively. This is concluded that USBF can be used as a simple and economic method to treat pigerry wastewater.
