The growth response of 10 difficult to establish landscape shrubs and trees was evaluated in a series of 4 backfill experiments utilizing hole sizes, organic amendments, mulch, and/or drip irrigation. Growth responses varied among species, but no consistent, positive responses were derived from traditional backfill amendments.

Sufficient fertility is important for crop growth and yield but supplying a balanced amount of N, P, and K with compost and manure is a challenge and nutrient imbalances can benefit weeds more than crops. The goal of this study was to compare the aboveground growth responses of common northeastern U.S. crops and weeds to addition of composted poultry manure (CPM). A secondary goal was to test whether the observed growth responses to CPM could be attributed to the three macronutrients—N, P, and K—supplied in the CPM. Two field experiments were conducted over 2 yr. Species grown were corn, lettuce, kale, Powell amaranth, common lambsquarters, giant foxtail, and velvetleaf. Plants were grown in soil amended with CPM or single-nutrient organic N, P, and K fertility amendments. Single-nutrient P treatments with bone char did not adequately mimic P supply from CPM. In both years, biomass of all weeds studied increased with CPM amendment rate. Powell amaranth was the most responsive to CPM addition, increasing 1,775 and 159% from the control to the highest CPM rate in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Corn biomass increased by 22% with CPM rate in 2010 but did not increase with CPM rate in 2011. Lettuce biomass increased with CPM amendment rate (175% in 2010 and 109% in 2011), but due to the increased weed biomass at high CPM amendment rates, good weed control will be necessary to maintain this yield benefit. The increase in growth of Powell amaranth, common lambsquarters, and giant foxtail with CPM amendment was not due to N or K, and may have been influenced by P or another factor in the CPM. Velvetleaf was the only species that exhibited increased biomass with N addition (as blood meal), similarly to the increase with added CPM, suggesting the velvetleaf growth response to CPM was due to N in the CPM. The results show that nutrient ratios should be considered when applying organic amendments, because application rates of organic amendments that meet the crop's needs for one nutrient may oversupply other nutrients. Overfertilization will not benefit crop yield, but the results of this study show that high organic fertility application rates are likely to increase weed growth.

Sistem hidroponik memungkinkan sayuran ditanam di daerah yang kurang subur dan daerah sempit yang padat penduduknya. Alasan penerapan teknik hidroponik yang utama adalah karena terbatasnya lahan pertanian yang produktif untuk memenuhi kebutuhan manusia yang semakin banyak tiap tahunnya, sehingga dibutuhkan suatu terobosan baru untuk memecahkan masalah tersebut. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan pada bulan November 2015 sampai bulan Januari 2016 yang bertempat di kampus Fakultas Pertanian Jl. Propinsi Kecamatan Tembilahan Hulu Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir Propinsi Riau.Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) pola faktorial yang terdiri dari 2 faktor. Faktor pertama adalah jenis POC (N) yang terdiri dari 3 taraf perlakuan yaitu POC Jus Bumi, POC Bonggol Pisang danPOC Limbah Sayuran. Faktor kedua adalah konsentrasi larutan (K) yang terdiri dari 3 taraf perlakuan yaitu 150 ppm, 200 ppm dan 250 ppm. Parameter pengamatan adalah Tinggi Tanaman , Jumlah Daun , Luas Daun , Diameter Batang, Panjang akar ,Volume Akar, Kadar Air, dan Bobot Hasil.Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan jenis POC jus bumi dengan konsentrasi larutan 150 ppm memberikan pertumbuhan dan produksi terbaik untuk tanaman selada secara hidroponik sistem wick. Perlakuan jenis POC limbah sayuran dengan konsentrasi 250 ppm memberikan pertumbuhan dan produksi terbaik selain POC jus bumi sehingga dapat dijadikan sumber POC alternatif.

Present investigation was undertaken to standardize technique for in vitro micro-propagation of chickpea( Cicer arietinum ) cultivar Vishwas (Phule G 12). Micropropagation method for chickpea was established and this method enabled much more efficient propagation of plants. The present work was aimed at evolving a protocol for rapid multiplication of chickpea using micropropagation technique. Explants from shoot tip and node segment were cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of BAP and Kinetin (1.0 to 2.5 mg/l) and their growth responses like shooting were elucidated. The maximum multiple response was observed with 2 mg/l concentration of BAP from both types of explant. The highest number of shoots (12.5 ± 0.3) was achieved on MS medium with 2 mg/l BAP using node segments. The medium supplemented with 2 mg/l of BAP was found better than all other concentrations. Individual shoots were transferred to IBA and IAA (1.0-1.5 mg/l) for root induction. MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/l of IBA proved better for rooting. Rooted plantlets were successfully hardened in greenhouse and established in the pot.

Increasing material, processing, and distribution costs have raised superphosphate prices to a point where many farms cannot support the costs of meeting maintenance phosphate requires men& Alternatives to superphosphate, particularly those that have lower processing costs and contain more P, may offer a solution to the problem provided they are agronomically as effective. Phosphate rock may indeed be such an alternative. Preliminary results from a series of five trials in Northland show that on soils of moderate P fertility, with low phosphate retention (PR) and high pH (5.9.6.0), initial pasture growth responses to rock phosphates are smaller than those from single or triple superphosphate. On one soil of higher PR and lower pH, the differences in yield between the rock-phosphates and the super. phosphates were smaller. Of the rock phosphates tested, Sechura and North Carolina (unground and ungranulated) tended to be more effective than ground and granulated Chatham Rise phosphorite. The effect on production of applying fertilisers once every three years, as opposed to annual applications is being investigated using triple superphosphate and Sechura phosphate rock. After two years, production levels appear largely unaffected by differences in application frequency. A comparison of locally-produced superphosphate with a reference standard showed that both performed similarly, indicating that the local product was of satisfactory quality.
