Cyperus rotundus (nut grass in English) is a perennial erect sedge plant and is distributed in over 90 countries of the world, where it has been mostly classified as a highly invasive weed. Despite this classification, the plant has been considered from traditional times to be medicinally important. The traditional uses of the plant in various countries include uses against various gastrointestinal tract disorders, skin diseases, leprosy, fever, and neurological disorders. Evaluation of the plant and especially its rhizomes in a scientific manner has revealed the presence of numerous phytochemicals and wide-ranging pharmacological activities, which include anti-microbial, gastrointestinal, wound healing, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-malarial, anti-obesity, hepatoprotective, and anti-pyretic activity. The scientific validation of a number of traditional uses strongly indicates that the plant may prove useful in the discovery of a number of lead compounds and novel drugs.

Streptomyces is one of mercury‐resistant bacteria which can convert Hg2+ into nontoxic Hg0 . This study aimed to identify mercury‐resistant Streptomyces present in the Cyperus rotundus rhizosphere from artisanal small‐scale gold mining (ASGM) area and clone merA gene to the cloning and expression vectors. Molecular identification was conducted using 16s rRNA gene with the maximum likelihood algorithms. Results revealed that the AS1 and AS2 strains were a group of Streptomyces ardesiacus and the BR28 strain was closed to Brevibacillus agri. The AS2 merA gene was cloned to pMD20 cloning vectors, pGEX‐5x‐1 and pET‐28c expression vectors. The transformation was successfully performed in BL21 and DH5α competent cells. The full length of the merA gene was confirmed to be 1,425 bp. This study is the first research on identifying mercury‐resistant Streptomyces and cloning the full‐length merA gene in Indonesia.

Abstract Recycling and reusing of wastewater acquired high priority among the research community to meet the ever-increasing demand for groundwater, and to tackle water scarcity in every country. In this scenario, a grey water treatment system is developed with a vertical flow wetland construction tank (VFWCT)with sand, gravel and silex as media combined with phytoremediation technology using plants like Cyperus rotundus, Canna indica, Typha angustifolia, Cyperus pangorei, and Phragmites australis. The assessment parameters like color, odor, temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, free residual chlorine, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), chloride, Sulphate, Total Suspended Solids (TSS),oil & grease, Sulphide,Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Nitrate Nitrogen, E.coli and Salmonella are used to substantiate the performance of proposed greywater treatment system. Simulation outcomes showed that most of the guideline values of the effluent are notably lower compared to the influent. The experimentation also focused on finding the best plant as Typha angustifolia for greywater treatment in the VFWCT. The plant’s rapid growth and the removal efficiency parameters of the plant with regard to the contaminants present in the greywater was highly notable. The removal efficiency was 56.56% and 50.25% for BOD5 and COD, the solids content TSS and TDS was 68% and 64.4%. The salt Cl− and Na+ removal efficiencies are 63.4% and 81.39% respectively. Majority of the parameters like pH value, Electrical conductivity, odor and TDS are higher than the groundwater aquifers, but falls within the world health organization safety limits.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is cultivated in many countries for its culinary and medicinal values. The production of saffron is limited by several factors, including weed infestation, which causes damage to the crop in terms of quantity and quality. However, little information is available on the different weed management strategies for saffron cultivation, as most of the strategies implemented are developed for large-scale and conventional agriculture. As a result, they are not applicable or affordable for organic or smallholder farmers, as is the case for saffron cultivation. The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of plastic mulching versus mulching in controlling weeds in saffron cultivation in the eastern region of Morocco. During the trial, which was conducted in 2018, the parameters measured correspond, on the one hand, to morphometric measurements and determination of saffron stigma yield and, on the other hand, to the determination of density, dry biomass, and weed control capacity. Compared to the control, mulching reduced the population and dry biomass of the most formidable weeds such as Cynodon dactylon, Aster squamatus, Cyperus rotundus, and Convolvulus arvensis. The average stigmata yield from plastic mulch treatment was 9% higher than of the control, and the number of leaves, leaf area, number, weight, and percentage of daughter corms with large diameter were higher for plants grown under mulch. Overall, the results of this study showed that the use of PE (polyethylene) mulch effectively reduced weed populations and improved saffron yield and vegetative growth.

Introduction: Agni (digestive and metabolic energy) is the main factor for digestion and metabolism. Meda (a type of body tissue i.e., fats) is formed from the Mamsa (a type of body tissue i.e., muscle) with its own Ushma (heat) in addition to the Snigdhatva (unctuousness) & Dravadtva Guna (liquidity) of Apa Mahabhuta (one of the fundamental components of this universe i.e., water). Due to impairment of Dhatvagni (metabolic energy), Medadusti (impair- ment of fats) takes place and in turn may result in Prameha (diabetes mellitus), Sthaulya (obesity) etc. Prameha is one of the leading diseases in the present era. The aggravated Kapha afflicts Meda, Mamsa and Kleda (moisture elements of the body) and in due course of time, Kaphaja Meha (a type of Prameha) is converted into Pittaja Meha (a type of Prameha), followed by Vataja Meha (another type of Prameha) if not treated properly. Aim: The present study was carried out to evaluate the concept of Meda and the role of Medadusti in the pathogenesis of Prameha along with the efficacy of the selected drug Mustak (Cyperus rotundus Linn.) to combat the situation. Material & Methods: In selected 35 patients of Prameha having the Medadusti Lakshan based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, Mustak (Cyprus rotundus Linn.) was administered in stipulated dose (12 grams in two divided doses with plain warm water) for two months. Result: The subjective parameters for Medadusti is clinically present in a max- imum number of Prameha patients. The result also reveals the significant efficacy of Mustak on relevant subjective and objective parameters with a 'p-value <0.001 in all subjective and objective parameters. Conclusion: The Nidan (aetiology) of Medadusti has a definite role to cause Prameha. In all the patients of Prameha, Medadusti Lakshan (features of impaired fatty tissue) is clinically present. The patients suffering from Prameha can be treated with the drug response to arrest the Medadusti like Mustak. Keywords: Medadusti, Mustak, Prameha
