We investigated effects of contact gap on magnetic nondestructive evaluation technique using a magnetic single-yoke probe. Firstly, we evaluated hysteresis curves and impedance related to permeability of the material measured by a single-yoke probe, when an air gap length between the probe and specimens changes. The hysteresis curve gradually inclines to the axis of the magneto-motive force and magneto-motive force at which the magnetic flux is 0 decreases with increasing the gap length. The effective permeability also decreases with increasing the gap thickness. The incremental of gap thickness increases the reluctance inside the magnetic circuit composed of the yoke, specimen and gap, which results in the reduction of flux applying to specimen.

ABSTRACT: This work presents the dynamic response of a lock subjected to the horizontal S0E component of the El Centro earthquake for empty and completely filled water chamber cases, by coupled fluid-structure analysis. Initially, the lock was studied by approximation, considering it similar to the case of a double piston coupled to a two-dimensional acoustic cavity (tank), representing a simplified analytical model of the fluid-structure problem. This analytical formulation can be compared with numerical results, in order to qualify the responses of the ultimate problem to be investigated. In all the analyses performed, modeling and numerical simulations were done using the finite element method (FEM), supported by the commercial software ANSYS.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, urbanization has brought about dramatic changes in population, life, and economy, while having a significant impact on the distribution of ecosystem service. As research on the relationship between urbanization and ecosystem service has gradually specified, we decided to explore it at different scales. In this paper, we quantified and mapped the spatial–temporal evolution and relationship between urbanization and ecosystem service value in the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration from 2000 to 2019 based on a dual-scale perspective of county and 3 km × 3 km raster. Our results show that the overall trend of urbanization level and ecosystem service value was increasing. Urbanization and ecosystem service value at the county scale showed a negative spatial correlation, while it was not significant at the raster scale. The “high–high” agglomeration was more concentrated, while the other three “low–low”, “low–high” and “high–low” agglomerations were more dispersed. Our findings suggest it is crucial to identify the key factors of small urban areas to grasp the development mechanism in the urbanization process and maintain the balance of the ecosystem.

Microplastic (MP) debris is recognized to be one of the most serious threats to marine environments. They are found in all seas and oceanic basins worldwide, even in the most remote areas. This is further proof that the transport of MPs is very efficient. In the present study, we focus our attention on MPs’ transport owing to the Stokes drift generated by sea waves. Recent studies have shown that the interaction between heavy particles and Stokes drift leads to unexpected phenomena mostly related to inertial effects. We perform a series of laboratory experiments with the aim to directly measure MPs’ trajectories under different wave conditions. The main objective is to quantify the inertial effect and, ultimately, suggest a new analytical formulation for the net settling velocity. The latter formula might be implemented in a larger scale transport model in order to account for inertial effects in a simplified approach.
