High strain rate superplasticity has been realised at room temperature for the first time with a ultra fine grained Zn-22wt%Al alloy. Zn-Al alloys have some advantages over low-yieldpoint steels in their low work-hardening rate and high ductility. In addition, Zn-Al alloys are environment-conscious because of no harmful metal like Pb. However, when Zn-Al alloys are subjected to plastic deformation, the strain is localised and local fracture can take place because of their low work-hardening property. In this study, a seismic damper was designed with a Ultra fine grained Zn-Al alloy. As a result, an ecological and high performance seismic damper, the so-called “maintenance-free seismic damper”, has been successfully developed.

AbstractThe optimum materials design in microstructural control could be developed for the highstrain-rate superplastic materials in the industrial scale. In the present work, it is reported that the high-performance-engine pistons with near-net-shape can be fabricated by the superplastic forging technology in the high-strain-rate superplastic PM Al-Si based alloy, which is produced by using this optimum materials design.

The high strain rate compressive behavior of a bicomponent high performance epoxy resin for advanced composites filled with Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) has been studied on a modified split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) setup under dynamic loading conditions. Dynamic stress-strain plot was obtained for each sample. The results of the study indicated that the plastic of the epoxy composites increased while yield strength decreases slightly with the increase of the content of PAEK powder. In contrast, EP/PAEK-10 composite has the best Compressive properties.
