In this work, the microstructure and corrosion behavior of a novel Al-6Mg alloy were investigated. The alloy was prepared by casting from pure Al and Mg+Al2Ca master alloy. The ingots were homogenized at 420 °C for 8 h, hot-extruded and cold-rolled with 20% reduction (CR20 alloy) and 50% reduction (CR50 alloy). The CR50 alloy exhibited a higher value of intergranular misorientation due to a higher cold rolling reduction ratio. The average grain sizes were 19 ± 7 μm and 17 ± 9 μm for the CR20 and CR50 alloys, respectively. An intergranular corrosion (IGC) behavior was investigated after sensitization by a nitric acid mass-loss test (ASTM G67). The mass losses of both the CR20 and CR50 alloys were similar at early periods of sensitization, however, the CR20 alloy became more susceptible to IGC as the sensitization time increased. Grain size and β phase precipitation were two critical factors influencing the IGC behavior of this alloy system.

AbstractSignificant debate has been noted in the α-ω and ω-β phase transformations of zirconium. The initial pressure of the α-to-ω transformation at room temperature has been reported to vary from 0.25 to 7.0 GPa, while the hydrostatic transformation is believed to occur at approximately 2.2 GPa. Shear stress is commonly considered as a key factor leading to the discrepancy. However, the principal mechanisms previously proposed concluded that the phase transformation pressure would be decreased in the presence of shear stress. The experimental results of the α-ω transformation in zirconium are contrary to this conclusion. In the ω-β phase diagram of zirconium, the dT/dP along the phase boundary near the α-ω-β triple-point was reported to be either positive or negative, but no theoretical explanation, especially a quantitative one, has been proposed. This article aimed to quantitatively investigate and explain the controversies reported in the α-ω and ω-β phase transformations of zirconium by applying a new nonhydrostatic thermodynamic formalism for solid medium, which has recently been proposed and is capable of quantitatively estimating the impact of shear stress on phase transformations in solids.

The deformation behavior of commercial Zr alloys with 1% and 2,5%Nb under compression at temperatures of the (α+β)-region of Zr-Nb phase diagram is considered on the basis of experimental data obtained by X-ray texture study of deformed samples. Mechanisms, responsible for plastic deformation of alloys by different temperature-rate regimes were determined on the basis of resulting textures. Among these mechanisms there are crystallographic slip and mutual displacements of crystallites along interphase boundaries. The latter mechanism sharply intensifies by grain fragmentation down to nanostructuring under conditions of α«β phase transformations. Texture features of deformed samples testify about interaction of plastic deformation with phase transformations and indicate that due to this interaction compression by optimal regimes promotes the utmost refinement of structure elements.

The phase transformations of the alloy Ti-40 mas % Nb after tempering and severe plastic deformation are studied. The phase transformations of the alloy according to the type and conditions of external influences are analyzed using methods of XRD, SEM and optical metallography. It is determined that inverse phase transformation of the metastable α''-phase to equilibrium β-phase is carried out after severe plastic deformation. Complete phase transformation α'' → β is typical for the mode, which consists of three pressing operation with the change of the loading axis in cramped conditions, followed by a multi-pass rolling in grooved rolls.
