Comprehensive investigation on the cause of a critical crack found in a diagonal member of a steel truss bridge

Bridges are one of the most important assets of transportation networks. A closure of a bridge can increase the vulnerability of the geographic area served by such networks, as it reduces the number of available routes. Condition monitoring and deterioration detection methods can be used to monitor the health state of a bridge and enable detection of early signs of deterioration. In this paper, a novel Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) methodology for bridge deterioration detection is proposed. A method to build a BBN structure and to define the Conditional Probability Tables (CPTs) is presented first. Then evidence of the bridge behaviour (such as bridge displacement or acceleration due to traffic) is used as an input to the BBN model, the probability of the health state of whole bridge and its elements is updated and the levels of deterioration are detected. The methodology is illustrated using a Finite Element Model (FEM) of a steel truss bridge, and for an in-field post-tensioned concrete bridge.

The railway double-track continuous bridge vertical load-carrying frequency is theoretical derived with the vehicle-bridge system mode1. The vertical load-carrying frequencies of the3×64 m through stud welding railway steel truss bridge are calculated, when two trains with 20 same high-speed passenger vehicles are traveling on the bridge from both ends. The change regularity of this double-track continuous bridge vertical load-carrying natural frequency with two trains on it is similar with the single-track simply supported bridge and this bridge vertical load-carrying natural frequency only one train on it. This bridge vertical load-carrying frequency when two train on it is smaller than that only train on it. The maximum deviation percentage between the vertical load-carrying natural frequency and the vertical natural frequency is 6.0452%. The vertical load-carrying frequency can be replaced by the average value.

Abstract. To improve the flutter stability of a certain type fabricated steel truss bridge, a method of setting tuyere is put forward. Based on the two-dimensional 3 DOF coupling flutter method (2d-3DOF method), with the numerical wind tunnel established by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the flutter stability control measures of tuyere is simulated. Through CFD numerical simulation, the flow field characteristics, flutter derivatives and critical flutter speed of origin and tuyere models are obtained. Through analysis, for the certain type fabricated steel truss bridge, the tuyere can improve its flutter stability. It illustrates the feasibility and reliability, and lays the foundation for further applied in practical projects.
