Abstract Background Heterotopic pregnancy occurred after frozen embryo transfer with two D3 embryos, and the case had a history of bilateral salpingectomy due to salpingocyesis. An ectopic heterotopic pregnancy was implanted in the left psoas major muscle, which has not been previously reported. Case presentation A 33-year-old woman presented with left back pain after curettage due to foetal arrest in the uterus without vaginal bleeding and spotting, and painkillers relieved the pain initially. When the painkillers ceased to work, the patient returned to the hospital. The β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) level remained increased compared with the time of curettage, and a diagnosis of retroperitoneal abdominal pregnancy was suggested by ultrasonography and computerized tomography (CT) with the gestational sac implanted in the left psoas major muscle at the left hilum level. Laparotomy was performed to remove the ectopic pregnancy. During the operation, we carefully separated the adipose tissue between the space of the left kidney door and left psoas major muscle, peeled away the gestational sac that was approximately 50 mm × 40 mm with a 25-mm-long foetal bud, and gave a local injection of 10 mg of methotrexate in the psoas major muscle. Fifty days later, β-hCG decreased to normal levels. Conclusion It is necessary to pay more attention to the main complaints to exclude rare types of ectopic pregnancies of the pelvis and abdomen after embryo transfer.

Abstract. The effect of feeding high levels of α-tocopherol and organic selenium (Se) to pigs on colour stability and on the susceptibility to oxidative deterioration was investigated. Treatments consisted of supplementation of vitamin E (200 mg/kg diet), organic Se (0.3 mg/kg diet) and both vitamin E and organic Se for the last 60 days to finishing pigs before slaughtering. Longissimus dorsi (LD) and psoas major (PM) muscles were examined after 2 and 7 days of storage on colour stability and on lipid peroxidation (measured as malondialdehyde equivalents). Rate of oxidation by Stimulation with Fe2+/ascorbate was also estimated in LD samples obtained post mortem. In PM 7 days post mortem we found differences between control and groups of pigs supplemented with vitamin E and Se on reflectance, but significant differences (P < 0.05) were found only in the vitamin E + Se group. Positive effects (P < 0.05) of vitamin E and Se on colour in psoas major muscle refrigerated for 7 days are supported with significant (P < 0.05) lower levels of TBARS values in pigs supplemented with vitamin E and organic Se as well. Supplementation with organic Se does not affect the oxidative stability of muscle tissue (longissimus dorsi) when the rate of iron-induced lipid oxidation was examined. Dietary Se had limited potential for enhancing the quality of pork carcasses (psoas major) and accentuating the effect of vitamin E on the oxidative stability of longissimus dorsi muscle was not found.

From eight cows, following electrical stimulation, the righthand-side longissimus and psoas major muscles were hot boned within 1 1/2 h post mortem, vacuum packaged and chilled at 1±1°C. The lefthand longissimus and psoas major muscles were cold boned and vacuum packaged after the carcasses had been chilled for 24 h (i.e. 1 1/2 h at −1 to −4°C, 3 m.s−1 immediately after slaughter followed by chilled storage at 1 ± 1°C). After 12 d of storage at 1 ± 1°C all primals were unpacked and cut into steaks which were subsequently displayed at 3±1°C under continuous illumination with a 300–400 Lux lamp. At days 0, 2, and 4 the color of the steaks was measured both instrumentally (Hunter L*, a*, b* and spectrum analysis) and visually (6-member butcher-panel). After 4 d of display steaks from hot boned psoas major muscles had a more stable color (higher a*- and chroma-values) than steaks from cold boned counterparts (P&lt;0.05) which coincided with slightly, though not significantly, better color scores (P&lt;0.10). The color stability of the longissimus muscle was not affected by time of boning. It is concluded that the color-stabilizing effect of hot boning is fairly small and probably of marginal significance to the retailer when electrical stimulation is included in the slaughtering process.

Purpose: In osteoarthritis of the hip, the pain may be strong even if the deformity is mild, but the pain may be mild even if the deformity is severe. If the factors related to the pain can be identified on imaging, reducing such factors can alleviate the pain, and effective measures can be taken for cases where surgery cannot be performed. In addition, imaging findings related to the pain are also important information for determining the procedures and the timing of surgery. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the differences in features of osteoarthritis seen on imaging between painless and painful osteoarthritis of the hip. Methods: The subjects were the patients with hip osteoarthritis who visited our department in 2015 and who underwent x-ray, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a total of 29 patients (54 hip joints; mean age 63 years; 8 males and 21 females). The degree of osteoarthritis was determined using the Tönnis grade from the x-ray image. The cartilage morphology, intensity changes of bone marrow on MRI (subchondral bone marrow lesions [BMLs]), osteophytes, joint effusions, and paralabral cysts were scored based on the Hip Osteoarthritis MRI Scoring System (HOAMS). The cross-sectional area of the psoas major muscle at the level of the iliac crest was measured on CT, and the psoas index (PI; the cross-sectional area ratio of the psoas major muscle to the lumbar 4/5 intervertebral disc) was calculated to correct for the difference in physique. Then, the relationships between these and visual analog scale (VAS) scores of pains were evaluated. Results: The average VAS was 55.4 ± 39 mm. The PI and all items of HOAMS correlated with the VAS. The average VAS of Tönnis grade 3 osteoarthritis was 75.8 ± 26 mm. When investigating only Tönnis grade 3 osteoarthritis, the differences between cases with less than average pain and those with above average pain were the BML score in the central-inferior femoral head ( P = .0213), the osteophyte score of the inferomedial femoral head ( P = .0325), and the PI ( P = .0292). Conclusion: Investigation of the differences between painless and painful osteoarthritis of the hip showed that the cases with more pain have BMLs of the femoral head on MRI that extend not only to the loading area, but also to the central-inferior area. Even with the same x-ray findings, the pain was stronger in patients with severe psoas atrophy. Thus, the instability due to muscle atrophy may also play a role in the pain of hip osteoarthritis.
