Abstract The supplementation of Selenium-enriched probiotics is effective in reducing oxidative stress and maintaining meat quality stability in broiler chicken especially under heat stress. An experimental study was conducted to perform Comparative analysis of Selenium yeast with inorganic Se in broilers under heat stress. A total of 120 broilers chicks of one day were assigned to 4 groups each consisting 30 chicks fed on same basal diet but different selenium sources. The basal diet of group D1 was not supplemented with Se source (Negative control), group D2 basal diet was supplemented with inorganic selenium (Sodium selenite 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase), group D3 basal diet was supplemented with commercially available organic selenium (Seleno-methionine 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase) and group D4 basal diet was supplemented with self-developed organic selenium (Se-enriched yeast 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase). The performance parameters i.e. feed intake (FI), live body weight (BW) and FCR were not significantly (p>0.05) effected by selenium supplementation in the starter phase but were significantly (p<0.05) effected in the finisher phase. Selenium supplementation significantly (p<0.05) effected serum Se level in different supplemented groups. Higher serum Se value (58.20±0.06) was recorded in D4 group. Similarly significantly lower selenium value was recorded for D4 and higher was recorded for D1 (11.36±0.08). However lower serum Paraoxonase (PON) value was recorded for D4 (13.24±0.01) and higher for D1 (13.33±0.03). Comparatively self-developed Se enriched yeast increased the Se accumulation and improved antioxidant system. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was found higher in D4 (12.333±0.03) followed by D3, D2 and D1 respectively. Whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly lower (p<0.05) in D4 (0.1437±0.003) followed by D3 (0.1457±0.002). Selenium supplementation increased the bird’s survival rate. Birds fed on Se enriched yeast showed higher Se deposition and better antioxidant capacity as compared to other sources of selenium. Se-enriched yeast displayed an improved result on Se deposition in tissues, and oxidative capacity, meat tenderness and immune response level as compared to other sources of selenium.

AbstractSelenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient with many beneficial effects for humans and other living organisms. Numerous microorganisms in culture systems enrich and convert inorganic selenium to organic selenium. In this study, Epichloë sp. from Festuca sinensis was exposed to increasing Na2SeO3 concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mmol/L) in Petri dishes with potato dextrose agar (PDA) for 8 weeks. Epichloë sp. mycelia were immediately collected after mycelial diameters were measured at 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 weeks of cultivation, respectively. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis was performed on different groups of Epichloë sp. mycelia. Different changes were observed as Epichloë sp. was exposed to different selenite conditions and cultivation time. The colony diameter of Epichloë sp. decreased in response to increased selenite concentrations, whereas the inhibitory effects diminished over time. Seventy-two of the 203 identified metabolites did not differ significantly across selenite treatments within the same time point, while 82 compounds did not differ significantly between multiple time points of the same Se concentration. However, the relative levels of 122 metabolites increased the most under selenite conditions. Specifically, between the 4th and 8th weeks, there were increases in 2-keto-isovaleric acid, uridine, and maltose in selenite treatments compared to controls. Selenium increased glutathione levels and exhibited antioxidant properties in weeks 4, 5, and 7. Additionally, we observed that different doses of selenite could promote the production of carbohydrates such as isomaltose, cellobiose, and sucrose; fatty acids such as palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid; and amino acids such as lysine and tyrosine in Epichloë sp. mycelia. Therefore, Epichloë sp. exposed to selenite stress may benefit from increased levels of some metabolite compounds.

Introduction. Selenopyran is an organic selenium compound with sharply hydrophobic properties. An increase in solubility in water (and as a consequence – and bioavailability) is possible due to the formation of inclusion complexes with cyclodextrins.Aim. The aim of this work was to study the effect of a gel containing a clathrate complex of selenopyran with β-cyclodextrin on the rate of wound healing on a model of a conditionally aseptic full-thickness planar wound in rats.Materials and methods. The object of the study was a gel containing a clathrate complex of selenopyran with β-cyclodextrin (the content of selenopyran in the gel was 0.1 %). A model of a full-thickness planar wound in sexually mature male rats was used. 20 individuals were divided into 2 groups – intact (without treatment) and experimental (received gel treatment). Efficacy was assessed by the change in wound area at 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 14 days after application of wound. Results and discussion. The results of the study showed that the relative area of the wounds in the treated animals by the 3rd day of the experiment was less than in the intact ones. On the fifth day of the experiment, the differences were statistically significant (57.49 ± 12.51 % in treated animals versus 85.27 ± 26.61 % in intact animals). By the 14th day of the experiment, there were practically no differences in the groups of animals.Conclusion. The results obtained indicate that when using a gel containing selenopyran in combination with β-cyclodextrin, it accelerates the transition from the inflammation phase to the proliferation phase. This is most likely due to the antioxidant properties of selenopyran. Considering the lower concentration of selenopyran in comparison with the therapeutic concentrations of other antioxidants (taurine, allantoin), it can be considered as a promising wound healing agent for further study.

Abstract Cardamine violifolia is the only selenium hyperaccumulation plant found in China. It has been developed as a source of medicinal and edible products for selenium supplementation of human. It is essential to increase selenium content of C. violifolia for nutrient biofortification and many planting approaches have been developed to achieve this aim. However, the contribution of rhizosphere microbes of C. violifolia to the selenium enrichment has not been investigated. In this study, four types of selenium, i.e., selenate, selenite, nanoparticles element selenium from Bacillus subtilis, and organic selenium from yeast, was added to the soil for the growth of C. violifolia, respectively. Selenate had the highest accumulation in C. violifolia, following by selenite, B. subtilis-Se, and yeast-Se. Except for yeast-Se, the concentration of selenium in C. violifolia is positively correlated with the amount of selenium added in the soil. Furthermore, different exogenous selenium exhibited distinct effects on the rhizosphere microbiome of C. violifolia. Both Alpha diversity and Beta diversity analyses displayed that rhizosphere microbiome were more obviously affected by selenium from B. subtilis and yeast than that of selenate and selenite. Different microbial species were enriched in the rhizosphere of C. violifolia under various exogenous selenium treatments. B. subtilis-Se application enhanced the abundance of Leucobacter, Sporosarcina, Patulibacter, and Denitrobacter, and Yeast-Se application enriched the abundance of Singulishaera, Lactobacillus, Bdellovirio, and Bosea. Bosea and the taxon belonging to the order of Solirubrobacterales was enriched in the samples with selenite and selenite addition, respectively, and their abundance was linearly related to the concentration of selenate and selenite application in the rhizosphere of C. violifolia. In summary, this study revealed the response of the rhizosphere microbiome of C. violifolia to exogenous selenium and it is of help to develop suitable selenium fertilizers to increase selenium hyperaccumulation level of this plant.

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for growth and immune function in beef cattle. We previously showed that supranutritional maternal organic Se supplementation during late pregnancy improves immune function in their newborn calves; however, the effects of maternal organic Se-supplementation on fetal programming during different pregnancy stages have yet to be elucidated. Herein, we investigated the effects of supranutritional maternal organic Se-supplementation in different pregnancy trimesters on their beef calf’s genome-wide transcriptome profiles. Within 12 to 48 h of birth, whole blood and Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle biopsies were collected from calves born to 40 crossbred Angus cows that received, except for the control group (CTR), Se-yeast boluses (105 mg of Se/wk) during the first (TR1), second (TR2), or third (TR3) trimester of gestation. Whole-blood Se concentrations of newborn calves increased from CTR, TR1, TR2 to TR3, whereas muscle Se concentrations of newborn calves were only increased in TR3 group. We identified 3048 unique differentially expressed genes (DEGs) across all group comparisons (FDR ≤ 0.05 and |log2FC| ≥ 1.5). Furthermore, we predicted 237 unique transcription factors that putatively regulate the DEGs. Independent of supplementation trimester, supranutritional maternal organic Se supplementation downregulated genes involved in adaptive immunity in all trimesters. Dependent on supplementation trimester, genes involved in muscle development were upregulated by TR3 Se supplementation and downregulated by TR1 Se-supplementation, and genes involved in collagen formation were downregulated by TR2 Se-supplementation. Supranutritional maternal organic Se supplementation in the last trimester of pregnancy resulted in upregulation of myosin and actin filament associated genes, potentially allowing for optimal muscle function and contraction. Our findings suggest a beneficial effect of supranutritional maternal organic Se supplementation during late gestation on Se-status and muscle development and function of newborn calves.

Abstract Aims Most crops are supplemented with selenium (Se) through the exogenous addition of inorganic selenium fertilizer. There is a lack of in-depth research on organic selenium fertilizers. Meanwhile, the dosage range between human selenium deficiency and selenium toxicity is narrow, so the selenium content of agricultural products needs to be controlled within a reasonable interval. Methods W e analyzed and compared the Se accumulation and speciation in rice during three different growth stages (late tillering stage, initiate heading stage, and full heading stage) using three selenium fertilizers, selenite, fermented Se, and potassium Selenocyanoacetate (Se-AAF) via the foliar application. Results The selenium content in rice sprayed with organic selenium fertilizer was controlled in the relatively safe range and met the human selenium supplement requirement compared to the sprayed sodium selenite, which was too high of a dose. The percentage of organic Se and protein Se in brown rice was found to be similar in all three Se fertilizers. The highest organic selenium content of 91.57% was found in the grain of rice at the full heading stage by spraying Se-AAF. The main Se species in the grain was selenomethionine (SeMet), which reached 80% of the total selenium. Se-methyl selenocysteine(SeMeCys) was found only in Se-AAF. The grain quality showed that all three Se fertilizers increased the consistency of gelatinization. Conclusions Appropriately delaying the spraying time and selecting organic Se fertilizer as the Se source can help to produce green and safe selenium-rich rice.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of selenium yeast and phytobiotic on the storage capacity, selected quality parameters of meat and content of selenium in muscles obtained from broilers. In the experiment, 1440 male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to four research groups: group received no additive (G1), group received a supplement of 0.3 mg Se (as sodium selenite)/kg of feed mixture (G2), group received 0.2 g phytobiotic and 0.3 mg Se as 0.1 g selenium yeast per 1 kg of feed mixture (G3) and group received 0.3 mg Se as 0.1 g selenium yeast per 1 kg of feed mixture (G4). Measurement of pH, determination of water retention capacity, degree of advancement of oxidative changes and selenium content in muscles were performed. Samples of chickens’ breast and thigh muscles were microbiologically analyzed. The additives significantly influenced the level of oxidation in muscles and the incorporation of selenium. The meat of chickens receiving organic selenium was characterized by significantly lower dynamics of oxidative changes. The studies carried out showed that selenium in organic form had better absorption.
