ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the contribution of the implementation of the Humanitude Care Methodology to the quality of health care in a Continuing Care Unit. Method: an action-research study with a non-probability convenience sampling, involving 34 health professionals from one unit in Portugal. Data was collected through a questionnaire and an observation worksheet for the Structured Sequence of Humanitude Care Procedures. We used data content analysis with the Statistical Package for Social Science, version 17.0. Results: health professionals demonstrated difficulties to provide care for people who are agitated, confused, disoriented, aggressive and who refuse care, and to communicate with patients who do not communicate verbally. The professionals valued the accomplishment of the stages of the observation worksheet. There were discrepancies between the perception of accomplishment and the actual practice. Throughout the implementation of the methodology, there was an increase in the practical application of the procedures, with positive repercussion for the patients and for the professionals. Conclusion: the results allowed to perceive the contribution of the process of implementation of the methodology, through the positive transformations in health care delivery.

Aims: In this study the authors wanted to answer the following question: To what extent are health care professionals aware of and able to respond to the new challenges? Methods: As an investigation method, the authors used a questionnaire and made a comparative analysis of answers related to the knowledge, skills and attitude of BSc nurses and other health professionals who possess a secondary qualification. The questionnaire was compiled based on the internationally accepted and validated Transcultural Self Efficacy Test. With the permission of the authors of the test, some questions were adapted to the national conditions. The responses were evaluated by statistical methods. Results: There were better results in the components of skills and attitude of BSc nurses but there was a very high number of professionals in both groups who either failed to have or could not meet the requirements and phenomena related to intercultural skills. Conclusions: The survey performed among nurses proved that there is a real demand for intercultural skills and knowledge related to expectations of the society. In order to improve the quality of health care, the development of these skills is necessary. Orv. Hetil., 2012, 153, 1711–1718.

Greece has been severely affected by the global financial and economic crisis, with far-reaching economic, social and political consequences. In 2013, the country was already experiencing its fifth year of recession and was operating within suffocating tax measures. Prior to the crisis, the Greek healthcare system suffered from a wide range of problems. Therefore, it was vulnerable to economic fluctuations and was not properly prepared to meet the changing needs of the population. The aim of this study was firstly to investigate the effect of the economic crisis on the quality of health care in Greece and secondly to propose methods to improve the quality policy of the Greek Health System. A literature review was carried out in order to collect all available information of the relevant literature sources in both Greek and international English-language bibliography. The effects of the economic crisis on the Greek national healthcare system were recorded extendedly. In particular, the effects of the economic crisis on access to health services, the effectiveness of hospital care, the quality of health care provided, the transparency and oversight are analysed. In summary, the need to re-examine and promote a public debate on the health budget, not only in economic terms, but as a development tool for the well-being of citizens, is emphasized. In conclusion, restoring the social values that govern the health care system is a prerequisite for creating a new model for sustainable development
