The reproductive characteristics of natural populations of meadow salsify were monitored between May 1990 and October 1991. Plants in even-aged populations did not produce seeds prior to the second winter and plants in uneven-aged populations died after seed production suggesting that meadow salsify at this site is a monocarpic perennial and not a true biennial. Delayed seed production may enhance abundance of this species by increasing the size of its bud bank. Plants of uneven-aged populations flowered over a range of root crown diameters; the percentage of plants bearing flowers increased with increasing root crown diameters. The minimum root crown diameter at which plants flowered in 1990 and 1991 was 0.2 and 0.6 cm respectively demonstrating that factor(s) other than plant size regulate flowering in this species. Seed production ranged between 100 to 850 seeds per plant. Total number of flower heads per plant and florets per plant were positively correlated with each other and with the root crown diameter. Root crown diameter is, therefore, a good indicator of potential fecundity in meadow salsify. Greater seed production by larger plants may compensate, at least in part, for the high juvenile mortality and longer generation time in this species. The results suggest that prolific seed production and long vegetative survival are important strategies in the maintenance of meadow salsify populations.

Cirsium pitcheri is a monocarpic perennial endemic to the shorelines of the Great Lakes, primarily Lakes Huron and Michigan. Its populations are being reduced by anthropogenic impact and deer grazing throughout much of its range. Several of its once abundant populations at some locations have been extirpated. The species is listed as threatened and endangered in Canada and the United States, respectively. Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the effects of simulated herbivory by white-tailed deer on the survival, growth, and compensatory ability of plants. We found mat Cirsium pitcheri possessed good ability to compensate for tissue loss. However, simulated intensive browsing resulted in significant reductions in root dry weight. Since the flowering ability of monocarpic perennials such as Cirsium pitcheri is dictated by the amount of stored root reserves, such reductions in root biomass may delay the onset of flowering, reduce overwinter survival, and affect the future growth and survival of this threatened species. Keywords: white-tailed deer, browsing, defoliation, compensation, Cirsium pitcheri, Pitcher's thistle.

A characteristic property of legumes is the formation of hard-stone seeds. To use such seeds for sowing, it is necessary to carry out measures to increase their seeding indicators. The article provides an overview of methods of pre-sowing preparation of seeds, priming (Seed Priming). The harvest of Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) can contain up to 90% or more hard-stone seeds. Mechanical priming of hard-stone seeds of Birdsfoot trefoil increases their germination energy and field germination.

The symptoms of A. candida on seed plants radish are described a number of varieties with different resistance to A. candida are evaluated. The methods of combating of this disease in elite seed production of radish are described. As a result of twoyear evaluation of breeding nursery samples it was revealed that there is varietal specificity of resistance to A. candida. The Carmen cultivar is more prone to disease in the generative phase, the most resistant to the pathogen is Mercado cultivar.
