In recent years, in order to minimize traffic accidents, developing driving assistance systems for security has attracted much attention. Lane detection is an essential element of avoiding accidents and enhancing driving security. In this chapter, the authors implement a novel real-time lighting-invariant lane departure warning system. The proposed methodology works well in different lighting conditions, such as in poor conditions. The experimental results and accuracy evaluation indicates the efficiency of the system proposed for lane detection. The correct detection rate averages 97% and exceeds 95.6% in poor conditions. Furthermore, the entire process has only 29 ms per frame.

<abstract><p>Controlling an epidemiological model is often performed using optimal control theory techniques for which the solution depends on the equations of the controlled system, objective functional and possible state and/or control constraints. In this paper, we propose a model-free control approach based on an algorithm that operates in 'real-time' and drives the state solution according to a direct feedback on the state solution that is aimed to be minimized, and without knowing explicitly the equations of the controlled system. We consider a concrete epidemic problem of minimizing the number of HIV infected individuals, through the preventive measure <italic>pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)</italic> given to susceptible individuals. The solutions must satisfy control and mixed state-control constraints that represent the limitations on PrEP implementation. Our model-free based control algorithm allows to close the loop between the number of infected individuals with HIV and the supply of PrEP medication 'in real time', in such a manner that the number of infected individuals is asymptotically reduced and the number of individuals under PrEP medication remains below a fixed constant value. We prove the efficiency of our approach and compare the model-free control solutions with the ones obtained using a classical optimal control approach via Pontryagin maximum principle. The performed numerical simulations allow us to conclude that the model-free based control strategy highlights new and interesting performances compared with the classical optimal control approach.</p></abstract>

The vision-based road lane detection technique plays a key role in driver assistance system. While existing lane recognition algorithms demonstrated over 90% detection rate, the validation test was usually conducted on limited scenarios. Significant gaps still exist when applied in real-life autonomous driving. The goal of this article was to identify these gaps and to suggest research directions that can bridge them. The straight lane detection algorithm based on linear Hough transform (HT) was used in this study as an example to evaluate the possible perception issues under challenging scenarios, including various road types, different weather conditions and shades, changed lighting conditions, and so on. The study found that the HT-based algorithm presented an acceptable detection rate in simple backgrounds, such as driving on a highway or conditions showing distinguishable contrast between lane boundaries and their surroundings. However, it failed to recognize road dividing lines under varied lighting conditions. The failure was attributed to the binarization process failing to extract lane features before detections. In addition, the existing HT-based algorithm would be interfered by lane-like interferences, such as guardrails, railways, bikeways, utility poles, pedestrian sidewalks, buildings and so on. Overall, all these findings support the need for further improvements of current road lane detection algorithms to be robust against interference and illumination variations. Moreover, the widely used algorithm has the potential to raise the lane boundary detection rate if an appropriate search range restriction and illumination classification process is added.
