Crack is one of the major distresses in asphalt pavement. Although epoxy asphalt concrete demonstrates higher distress resistant ability than traditional asphalt concrete, crack initiation and propagation is also inevitable due to traffic and environmental impact. Among the three typical crack modes, the Mode I crack usually appears in epoxy asphalt concrete pavement. In this paper, the model of crack propagation in epoxy asphalt concrete pavement is proposed and simulated through finite element method in conjunction with virtual crack extension approach. The eight-node singularity element was used at the crack-tip. And the node shift/release technique is adopted for modeling propagation of the crack tip. Results show that J-integral is path-independent due to the small plastic zone around the crack tip and suitable to evaluate the fracture behavior for epoxy asphalt concrete pavement. Two inflexions on the curve of J-integral vs. crack length indicate that epoxy asphalt concrete pavement have three phases in crack initiation and propagation: crack initiation, stable crack propagation and unstable crack propagation. Finally, the equation describing the relationship between J-integral and displacement is provided in this paper.

A novel high durability epoxy asphalt concrete for bridge deck pavements is introduced in this paper, including the manufacturing process of epoxy asphalt binder and laboratory evaluation for this material. Various laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the pavement performance of the materials, such as fatigue test, wheel tracking test, moisture susceptibility test and thermal stress restrained specimen test. Test results show that epoxy asphalt concrete has 20137 cycles/mm dynamic stability at 70°C, and-28.4 °C fracture temperature. The fatigue equations of epoxy asphalt concrete at different temperatures were obtained. Findings from the research indicate that the epoxy asphalt concrete is a suitable material for the pavement of long-span steel bridges in China due to its profound performance.

As a fair deck pavement material of its kind used in steel bridge, the epoxy asphalt concrete is considered much more superior to ordinary asphalt concrete in terms of road performance, while still greatly subject to the level of design and construction. Starting from a practical case of the epoxy asphalt concrete that has been applied in the deck pavement of Pingsheng Steel Bridge, this paper centers on a comprehensive study and discussion of the epoxy asphalt mixture, specifically in aspects of physical and mechanical performance test of stability under high temperature, performance under low temperature, tortuosity, immersion stability, linear contraction performance, fatigue performance and oil-erosion resistance performance. This will provide positive instruction for future deck pavements on steel bridges.

Epoxy asphalt concrete has been widely used in China as an excellent paving material on long-span steel bridges. Analysis of its low-temperature thermal stress can be a more accurate grasp of pavement low temperature stress condition. The bending creep test of epoxy asphalt mixture was carried out at low temperatures to obtain the creep compliances and determine the relaxation module. Then the principal curves of the relaxation module were regressed in a form of Prony progression expression by Matlab. The relaxation module was further converted to the parameters needed in the viscous-elastic module in ANSYS software. Finally, a three-dimensional full-scale Finite Element model for steel box girder and asphalt overlay was constructed to analyze the stress scenario under low temperatures for the duration of 48 hours. The maximum temperature stress was only 2.45 MPa at a temperature of -20.4°C and thus no shrinkage cracks will occur.

The TAF epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC) is a new steel bridge deck pavement materials , the application of the TAF EAC is increasing in China. But the research for some of it's performance and construction technology is not throughly, which results in the useful life of the bridge deck paving materials greatly reducing. This paper focuses on the design and construction methods of the Japanese TAF epoxy asphalt concrete, and take the Humen bridge steel bridge deck pavement repair project in December 2011 for example.

As the problem of asphalt concrete bridge deck pavement is becoming more and more serious, how to improve its road performance has become the focus of the study. As the lack of shear strength and bond strength between layers, flaking, raveling and other diseases were occurred on steel bridge deck asphalt pavement. This paper combines the common damages of bridge deck and asphalt concrete pavement in cold area of northeast region, focuses on the analysis of the cause of asphalt concrete pavement damage causes, puts forward preventive measures and recommendations, and present the bridge deck pavement structure in cold area combined with the engineering practice. The research results can effectively guide the construction of bridge deck pavement.
