The syntheses of 4-[4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-imidazoline-3-oxide-1-oxyl-2-yl)phenoxy]phthalonitrile (3, C21H19N4O3) and 4-[4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-imidazoline-1-oxyl-2-yl)phenoxy]phthalonitrile (4) were carried out by microwave-assisted nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 4-nitrophthalonitrile (2) by the pre-formed 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-imidazoline-3-oxide-1-oxyl (1). Compounds 3 and 4 were characterized unambiguously by a rich array of analyses, such as melting point, FT–IR, MALDI–TOF MS, elemental analysis, UV–Vis, CV, EPR, magnetic measurements and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural studies demonstrate that the C—H...X and C—X...π (X = O and N) interactions in the radical nitronyl nitroxide groups play an important role in the assembly of the crystal structures. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry analyses show that the phthalonitrile substituent retains the redox properties of the Ullman radicals.

Sound velocities and elastic property measurements have been employed to study the strength and rigidity of the structure of ZnO-B2O3 glasses doped with LiCl. Moduli of elasticity such as longitudinal, Young`s , bulk and shear modulus have been calculated using ultra sound velocities such as longitudinal and transverse velocities are measured at a frequency of 10 MHz as function of LiCl concentration. Both sound velocities and elastic moduli decrease with increase of LiCl concentration. The results are discussed in the view of borate network and dual structural role played by the divalent zinc ions present in the network. The results indicate that the Zn+2 ions are likely to occupy network forming positions in this glass system. While LiCl is a typically dissolved in the borate network and Cl- occupy the interstitial positions.

2ZnO.3B2O3.nH2O (Zinc borate) having the industrially important composite and used as flame retardant, anti-smoke and semiconductor in the electronic circuits was examined different crystal structures. In this study, nanofibers of PVA /zinc nitrate/ boric acid composite were prepared by using sol-gel processing and electrospinning technique. By high temperature calcinations of the above precursor fibers, nanofibers of 2ZnO.3B2O3.5H2O composite with diameters of 110 nm could be successfully obtained. The products have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FT-IR (Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy). The effects of experimental conditions on the products were investigated.
