This in vitro study analyses the biochemical interaction between saliva and three types of dental composite resins (a direct resin, an indirect resin and a dual-cure resin used for cementation of indirect dental restorations). The resin samples were obtained following a specific protocol and in line with the producers� recommendations; the resin samples were incubated with saliva samples collected from 19 healthy volunteers. The obtained results showed that the tested composite resins did not produce significant changes in oxidative stress parameters that were analysed (albumin, uric acid, GGT / gamma glutamyl transferase, OXSR-1 / oxidative stress responsive kinase 1) and do not influence the inflammatory salivary status reflected by the levels of IL-6 - an inflammatory marker.

As resinas compostas fotopolimerizáveis têm tido cada vez mais indicações na odontologia restauradora devido às vantagens que apresentam. Porém variações na técnica de fotoativação, densidade de energia, intensidade da luz e tempo de irradiação podem gerar polimerização incompleta, o que pode resultar em uma resina composta com alta porosidade, pouca dureza, baixo polimento, alta capacidade de pigmentação ou efeitos tóxicos na polpa. Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar o efeito do tempo de polimerização na pigmentação extrínseca de três resinas compostas fotopolimerizáveis. Utilizando uma fonte de LED, foram confeccionados 180 espécimes de resina composta microhíbrida, nanohíbrida e nanoparticulada, com diferentes protocolos de polimerização. Os espécimes foram subdivididos em grupos de acordo com o agente pigmentante. Com o uso de um colorímetro, foram analisados quanto à mudança de cor (ΔE). Os dados foram submetidos ao teste ANOVA e Duncan (α=0,05). A resina composta microhíbrida apresentou os menores valores de ΔE em comparação à nanoparticulada e à nanohíbrida quando imersos em vinho. Quanto maior o tempo de polimerização menores valores de ΔE foram obtidos. Abstract Objective Lifelike esthetic appearance of dental restorations is among the main goals in restorative dentistry. This study aimed to assess and compare the opalescence and fluorescence of two dental composite resins. Materials and Methods This in vitro experimental study evaluated the A2 shade of Filtek Z350 XT Enamel, Filtek Z350 XT Dentin, Aelite Aesthetic Enamel, and Aelite All Purpose Body composite resins. Composite discs were fabricated with 10 mm diameter and 0.5 and 1 mm thicknesses (n = 2) using a plexiglass mold and subjected to colorimetry. The color parameters were determined according to the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) L*a*b* system using a spectrophotometer. The fluorescence and opalescence were also measured and reported separately for 0.5 and 1 mm thicknesses of Z350, Aelite Body, and Enamel composite resins. To determine the opalescence, the color of samples in the reflectance mode was measured using a calibration cylinder and in the transmittance mode in presence of 100% ultraviolet (UV) light. To determine the fluorescence, the color of samples against a white background in the reflectance mode in presence or absence of 100% UV light was measured. Statistical Analysis Data were analyzed using SPSS via three-way analysis of variance and independent t-test. Results The fluorescence of 0.5 mm thickness of all composites was higher than that of 1 mm thickness (p < 0.05). The fluorescence of Aelite was higher than that of Z350 (p < 0.05). The fluorescence of Aelite Enamel was higher than that of Aelite Body irrespective of their thickness, but the results were opposite for Z350 (p < 0.05). In Aelite composite, opalescence increased by an increase in thickness (p < 0.05). The opalescence of Aelite was significantly higher than that of Z350 (p < 0.05). The opalescence of 0.5 mm thickness of Aelite Enamel was higher than that of Aelite Body, while the opalescence of 1 mm thickness of Z350 Body was higher than that of Z350 Enamel (p < 0.05). Conclusion Thickness, type, and brand of composite resins affected their fluorescence and opalescence.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study compared the color stability of different dental composite resins after prolonged exposure to a coffee solution. Methods: Sixty-four cylindrical discs (10 mm diameter x 2 mm thickness) were prepared using 8 different dental composite resins (n=8, per group). The specimens were first immersed in artificial saliva for 24 h followed by immersion in a coffee solution for 14 days. The assessment of chromatic variation (ΔE) was performed with the aid of a Vita Easyshade Advanced spectrophotometer (VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germany). The color of each specimen was calculated based on the L*, a* and b* coordinates of the CIELab system. Results: Grandio SO had the lowest average chromatic variation (ΔE=7.77) after immersion in coffee solution. Durafill VS, Grandio and Z350 XT (ΔE=8.58; ΔE=9.52; ΔE=10.39, respectively) showed similar chromatic variation, with no statistical difference in relation to Grandio SO. However, the other dental composite resins evaluated showed statistically higher values of ΔE compared to Grandio SO, and Enamel HRi (ΔE=20.56) demonstrated the highest chromatic variation. Conclusion: The Bulk Fill and hybrid composite resins from the same manufacturer (Micerium, Avegno, Italy) showed greater chromatic variation than the other composite resins tested. Grandio SO (Voco, Cuxaven, Germany) had the lowest ΔE variation.
