Abstract The difficulty of residual sludge dehydration is the major problem in sewage treatment. The reduction of moisture content in sludge can reduce the sludge volume significantly and is conducive to the subsequent disposal of sludge. As an organic polymer flocculant, chitosan (CTS) is widely used in water and waste water treatment. In this study, CTS was used in sludge treatment to improve the sedimentation and dehydration properties of sludge. When treated with CTS, the moisture content of sludge cake decreased from 85.9% to 83.0%, the SV30 decreased to about 1/2, and the sludge volume reduced to 82.9%. Further analysis showed that the zeta potential (ζ-potential) of the sludge changed from negative value to positive value, and the D50 of the sludge was larger than that of the raw sludge. In addition, when the moisture content of the sludge cake was reduced to the lowest, the concentration of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and SCOD was the largest and the |ζ| decreased to the lowest. CTS improved the dehydration and sedimentation performance of sludge mainly by factors of electrical neutralization, adsorption bridging and dissolution of EPS.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge was conducted to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying change in sludge dewaterability during its anaerobic digestion. Unexpectedly, the results indicated that sludge dewatering properties measured by capillary suction time only deteriorated after 10 days of anaerobic digestion, after which dewaterability recovered and remained stable. The loosely bound extracellular polymeric substance (LB-EPS) content increased three-fold after 20 days of anaerobic digestion, and did not change significantly during the remaining 30 days. The tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) content reduced slightly after 20 days of anaerobic digestion, and stabilized during the last 30 days. Polysaccharides (PS) and proteins (PN) content in LB-EPS increased after 10 days of anaerobic digestion. However, PS and PN contents in TB-EPS decreased slightly. The relationship analysis showed that only LB-EPS correlated with dewaterability of the sludge during anaerobic digestion.

Dewatering characteristics of aerobic granular sludge, activated sludge and sludge which mixed flocculant was studied. It was shown that the specific resistance of aerobic granular sludge is lower than activated sludge and sludge with mixed flocculant was in the range of 1.07~1.80×109 S2/g, and it increased with the increase of diameters of the granules. The water ratio of aerobic granular sludge by pressure filtrate dehydration was decreased to 83.5~86.1%, activated sludge and sludge which mixed flocculant were 94.2% and 91.4%, respectively. The structural characteristics, distribution features of extracellular polymeric substances and PN/PS values of aerobic granular sludge were important factors of its excellent dewaterability. Aerobic granular sludge technology was regarded as one of the promising biotechnologies in sludge treatment.
