The paper describes the mechanical qualities of thermoset – epoxy resin filled with recycled rubber in the form of micro-particles. Such an application of waste can be regarded as material usage which should be preferred to other ways of waste handling. Micro-particles of recycled rubber affect the mechanical qualities of polymer in which they are dispersed. The paper quantifies cohesive and adhesive properties of the filled epoxy resin. Filling polymers – thermosets with waste fillers saves costs, it does not burden the environment, and it is inexpensive. The results described in this paper can lead to enlarging the application areas of recycled rubbers. As the filler, recycled rubber gained by the process of an ecological disposal of tyres by Gumoeko, s.r.o. (private limited company) was used.

Recently, the Innovative Composite Center of Kanazawa Institute of Technology developed a thermoplastic epoxy resin (TP-EP). Resin-impregnated carbon fiber reinforced TP-EP (CF/TP) strands molded by pultrusion were developed by Komatsu Matere Co., Ltd., for use as tension rods. This study examines the prediction of the statistical life time for these developed CF/TP strands under cyclic tension loading with comparison to our earlier report of similar predictions for carbon fiber reinforced thermoset epoxy resin (CF/TS) strands having a thermoset epoxy resin (TS-EP) as a matrix. First, test methods for static and fatigue strengths at elevated temperatures were developed for CF/TP strands. Second, static and fatigue tensile strengths of CF/TP strands were measured statistically at various constant temperatures under a constant strain rate and frequency. The master curves of statistical fatigue tensile strengths for CF/TP strands were constructed by substituting the measured data into the formulations of these strengths based on the matrix resin viscoelasticity. The fatigue strength characteristics of CF/TP strands were discussed through comparison to those of CF/TS strands with thermosetting epoxy resin as the matrix.

The primary objective of this study is to determine the interphase behaviour of a thermoset epoxy resin that is commercially used for carbon fibre–reinforced composite materials in aerospace structures and a suitable thermoplastic material that can be used as a boundary layer. The thermoplastic boundary layer will be used for welding purposes to join structural components with a fraction of the effort compared to conventional gluing processes. In this study, the interphase formation of an epoxy resin with several thermoplastic materials, namely, polyetheretherketone, polyvinylidenfluoride, polyphenylensulfide and polyetherimide (PEI), is studied via hot-stage microscope experiments. Based on this study, PEI was selected, and a detailed study was performed to determine the dependency of dissolution, diffusion and phase separation mechanisms under various isothermal conditions. Additionally, the welding behaviour was investigated by a resistance welding rig whereby the process parameters were statistically varied to optimize the lap shear strength. The results of this study will enable a statement about the interphase development, the morphology and the mechanical properties which is a key element of fully understanding the process.
