Numerical simulation for unsteady motions of the human vitreous humor as a viscoelastic substance in linear and non-linear regimes

AbstractA three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database of statistically planar $$H_{2} -$$ H 2 - air turbulent premixed flames with an equivalence ratio of 0.7 spanning a large range of Karlovitz number has been utilised to assess the performances of the extrapolation relations, which approximate the stretch rate and curvature dependences of density-weighted displacement speed $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ . It has been found that the correlation between $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ and curvature remains negative and a significantly non-linear interrelation between $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ and stretch rate has been observed for all cases considered here. Thus, an extrapolation relation, which assumes a linear stretch rate dependence of density-weighted displacement speed has been found to be inadequate. However, an alternative extrapolation relation, which assumes a linear curvature dependence of $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ but allows for a non-linear stretch rate dependence of $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ , has been found to be more successful in capturing local behaviour of the density-weighted displacement speed. The extrapolation relations, which express $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ as non-linear functions of either curvature or stretch rate, have been found to capture qualitatively the non-linear curvature and stretch rate dependences of $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ more satisfactorily than the linear extrapolation relations. However, the improvement comes at the cost of additional tuning parameter. The Markstein lengths LM for all the extrapolation relations show dependence on the choice of reaction progress variable definition and for some extrapolation relations LM also varies with the value of reaction progress variable. The predictions of an extrapolation relation which involve solving a non-linear equation in terms of stretch rate have been found to be sensitive to the initial guess value, whereas a high order polynomial-based extrapolation relation may lead to overshoots and undershoots. Thus, a recently proposed extrapolation relation based on the analysis of simple chemistry DNS data, which explicitly accounts for the non-linear curvature dependence of the combined reaction and normal diffusion components of $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ , has been shown to exhibit promising predictions of $$S_{d}^{*}$$ S d ∗ for all cases considered here.

This paper presents a method that utilizes a memristor to replace the non-linear resistance of typical Chua’s circuit for constructing a chaotic system. The improved circuit is numerically simulated in the MATLAB condition, and its hardware implementation is designed using field programmable gate array (FPGA). Comparing the experimental results with the numerical simulation, the two are the very same, and be able to generate chaotic attractor.

Sleeved purlin systems are usually used in roof constructions. A non-linear relationship between the bolt hole extension and the load transferred to the bolt was derived with experimental testing and numerical simulation. Consequently, the non-linear rotational stiffness of sleeved joints was derived based on the configuration of sleeves in this paper. The procedure for calculating the deflection of purlin systems with non-linear rotational stiffness at the joints is presented. The analysis and calculation of the deflection is demonstrated through a case study.

The accurate prediction of SPM vessel yaw motion is important to its mooring system design. Inconsistencies have been observed between the numerical and model test predictions of offloading responses. In some cases, the numerical simulation predicted unstable yaw behavior of the vessel (fishtailing) while the model tests did not show such instability. This discrepancy between experiment and theory casts doubt as to whether the numerical simulation predicts correctly the vessel yaw motion. The work presented in this paper investigates the following two hypotheses to possibly explain the non-expected fishtailing in the numerical simulations: The mooring software may not accurately integrate non-linear differential equations that describe the yaw motion of the SPM vessel. Some damping terms may be under-estimated in the software (user input issue). To validate the integration scheme of the system of non-linear differential equations as implemented in the mooring software, a stability analysis has been conducted on a shuttle tanker moored to a West Africa deep water buoy. Variations of parameters like the hawser length, its axial stiffness and the vessel’s drag coefficients have been studied to explore their impacts on the vessel yaw stability. The approach is to identify without performing any time domain simulations, the domains of stability by linearizing the differential equations of SPM vessel’s yaw motion around its equilibrium point. The validity of the developed approach is then confirmed by performing time domain simulations of the same case. The second conjecture which may explain the non-expected fishtailing in numerical simulations was that some damping terms may be under-estimated. A semi empirical formula for the drag moment can be derived from rotation tests and comparisons were performed with the engineering model implemented in the mooring analysis software. The results show that by calibrating this damping term with the one derived from the experiments, the numerical simulations would match the stable yaw motion behavior as predicted during model tests. Following the above findings, a tool has been developed to fit the yaw drag moment engineering model based on experimental measurements, for any case of mooring analysis.
