This paper presents the development and characterization of aluminium alloy 6063 based metal matrix composite with varying combinations of fly ash and Borosilicate reinforcements.  In the present work, the aluminium alloy 6063 (AA) is taken at a constant 84 vol% while the reinforcements Fly Ash (FA) and Borosilicate (B) are varied in the proportions of 2%, 4% 8%, 125 and 14%. Six samples were fabricated by stir casting and the mechanical properties were analyzed using tensile test, hardness test and wear test while the microstructure is analyzed by obtaining SEM and EDX images of the specimen. It is seen that both the reinforcements used in this study, increased the tensile and wear resistance of the alloy. The desirable mechanical and micro structural properties were found to be in the specimen with 84% AA, 14% FA and 2% B. The tensile strength of the aluminum alloy at this desirable combination is found to increase by 11.97%, ductility by 36.75% and the wear resistance by 62%.  This metal matrix composite of AA6063 with fly ash and Borosilicate reinforcements can be used in automobile, aerospace and structural applications where wear resistance and tensile properties are mainly required.

The surface characteristics of an extruded 6060 aluminium alloy were investigated with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the extruded surface was covered by oxides of aluminium and magnesium. The thickness of aluminium oxide was found to change along the extrusion direction with the thinnest and thickest oxide at the beginning and end of the extrudate, respectively. Magnesium segregation was found on the surface of the extrusion with the highest and lowest Mg concentration at the beginning and end of the extrudate, respectively. This is the inverse result of that expected where increasing Mg content was believed to be associated with film instability and thicker films.

A new passivation process has been developed for producing a chrome-free and coloured conversion coating on aluminium alloy AA6063 with K2ZrF6. The conversion coating obtained has a dark film, which enables visual assessment of the coating development and coating quality during processing. The colouring effect is a significant advantage over the zirconium based conversion coatings currently used in the industry, which are largely colourless. The new treatment process is simple and allows a uniform coating to be formed within a few minutes. The composition and the surface morphology of the coatings were characterized. The corrosion resistance of the coated samples was evaluated by electrochemical tests. Through electrochemical analysis, corrosion current of the coatings is low, it has excellent corrosion resistance; SEM, EDS and XRD are used to analyze the process coating.
