This paper presents a novel modified Levy flight optimization for a photovoltaic PV solar energy system. Conventionally, the Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm has been widely deployed in most applications due to its simplicity and ease of implementation. However, P&O suffers from steady-state oscillation and stability, besides its failure in tracking the optimum power under partial shading conditions and fast irradiance changes. Therefore, a modified Levy flight optimization is proposed by incorporating a global search of beta parameters, which can significantly improve the tracking capability in local and global searches compared to the conventional methods. The proposed modified Levy flight optimization is verified with simulations and experiments under uniform, non-uniform, and dynamic conditions. All results prove the advantages of the proposed modified Levy flight optimization in extracting the optimal power with a fast response and high efficiency from the PV arrays.

ABSTRACTZn2SiO4:Mn thin films were deposited and studied as thin film phosphors for flat panel cathodoluminescent displays. Crystallized films with improved electrical conductivity were obtained after conventional and rapid thermal annealings in a N2 environment at 850Xy11100 °C for 0.25 to 60 minutes. A maximum cathodoluminescent efficiency of 1.3 Lm/W was achieved under dc excitation at 1500 volts. The luminescent emission from these thin films was peaked around 525 nm. The decay time of these films was controlled in the range of 2 to 10 ms by varying the deposition and annealing parameters. The fast response time of these thin films overcomes the long decay limitation of the Zn2SiO4:Mn powder phosphor in practical display applications.

Memristive technologies are attractive due to their nonvolatility, high density, low power, nanoscale geometry, nonlinearity, binary/multiple memory capacity, and negative differential resistance. For memristive devices, a model corresponding with practical behavioral characteristics is highly favorable for the realization of its neuromorphic system and applications. In this paper, we propose a novel memristor model based on the Ag/TiOx nanobelt/Ti configuration, which can reflect three different states (i.e. original stage, transition stage, and resistive switching state) of the physical memristor with a satisfactory fitting precision (greater than 99.88%). Meanwhile, this work gives (1) an insight onto the electrical characteristics of the memristor model under different humidity conditions; (2) the influence of the water molecular concentration on the memristor behavior, which is of importance for the memristor fabrication and subsequent applications. For verification purposes, the proposed three-state switchable memristor is applied into the memristor-based logic implementation. The experimental results demonstrate that the constructed circuit is able to realize basic Boolean logic operations with fast response speed and high efficiency.

This work introduces a new way to control hydraulic cylinder velocity using an inlet metering pump system to control the hydraulic flow entering the cylinder. The inlet metering system consists of a fixed displacement pump and an inlet metering valve that adjusts the hydraulic fluid flow entering the pump as required. The energy losses associated with flow metering in the system are reduced because the pressure drop across the inlet metering valve can be arbitrarily small. The fluid is supplied to the inlet metering valve at a fixed pressure using a charge pump. A velocity control system is designed using the inlet metering system as means to control the fluid flow to a hydraulic cylinder. In addition to the inlet metering system, the velocity control system designed in this work includes a four-way directional valve to set the fluid flow direction according to the desired direction of the hydraulic cylinder velocity. Open-loop and closed-loop proportional and proportional derivative (P and PD) controllers are designed. Designs with the goals of stability and performance of the system are studied so that a precise and smooth velocity control system for the hydraulic cylinder is achieved. In addition to potentially high efficiency of this system, there is potential for other benefits including low cost, fast response, and less complicated dynamics compared to other systems. The results presented in this work show that the inlet metering velocity control system can be designed so that the system is stable, there is zero overshoot and no oscillation.

Structured Cabling is not a demonstrative course, but a course to stimulate students’ learning interest and to improve experiment’s efficiency. Unfortunately there are some disadvantages for experimental instruments on the present market, such as low testing speed, low automation level and less functions, etc. A multi-processor structure is proposed in this paper, which consists of a 32-bit ARM processor S3C2440 and a 8-bit Single Chip Microcomputer STC89LE54. This structure is used to develop a new network cabling experimental instrument, which is based on embedded system. The instrument can achieve precise processing, such as synchronous data acquisition for wire cores of 32 standard network lines according to EIA/TIA568A Standard or EIA/TIA568B Standard, display and data storage, etc. The instrument has characteristics of high efficiency, fast response, automatic identification, and ease of use. It is used to implement consistency between teaching and job training. Therefore it has high practical value.
