When a crack is detected in a stainless steel pipe during in-service inspection, the failure estimation method given in the codes such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section XI or JSME S NA-1-2008 Appendix E-8 can be applied to evaluate the integrity of the pipe. In the current editions of these codes, the failure estimation method is provided considering bending moment and pressure. Torsion load is assumed to be relatively small and not considered in the method. In this paper, finite element analyses are carried out for 24-inch stainless steel pipe with a circumferential surface crack under the multi-axial loads including internal pressure. Based on the analysis results, the failure estimation method for cracked pipe subjected to the combined bending and torsion moments is developed considering the effect of internal pressure.

The present study aimed to study ratcheting strains of corroded stainless steel 304LN elbow pipes subjected to internal pressure and cyclic bending moment. To this aim, spherical and cubical shapes corrosion are applied at two depths of 1 mm and 2 mm in the critical points of elbow pipe such as symmetry sites at intrados, extrados, and crown positions. Then, a Duplex 2205 stainless steel elbow pipe is considered as an alternative to studying the impact of the pipe materials, due to its high corrosion resistance and strength, toughness, and most importantly, the high fatigue strength and other mechanical properties than stainless steel 304LN. In order to perform numerical analyzes, the hardening coefficients of the materials were calculated. The results highlight a significant relationship between the destructive effects of corrosion and the depth and shape of corrosion, so that as corrosion increases, the resulting destructive effects increases as well, also, the ratcheting strains in cubic corrosions have a higher growth rate than spherical corrosions. In addition, the growth rate of the ratcheting strains in the hoop direction is much higher across the studied sample than the axial direction. The highest growth rate of hoop strain was observed at crown and the highest growth rate of axial strains occurred at intrados position. Altogether, Duplex 2205 material has a better performance than SS 304LN.

This paper covers work carried out by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) to investigate on mechanisms leading to cracking of piping as a result of thermal loading existing in flow mixing zones. The main purpose of this work is to analyse, with a new experiment and its numerical interpretation, and to understand the mechanism of propagation of cracks in such components. To address this issue, a new specimen has been developed on the basis of the Fat3D experiment. This thermal fatigue test consists in heating a 304L steel pre-cracked tube while cyclically injecting ambient water onto its inner surface. The tube is regularly removed from the furnace for a crack characterisation. Finally, the crack growth is evaluated from the crack length differences between two stops. In parallel, a finite element analysis is developed using the finite element Cast3M code. A pipe with a semi-elliptical crack on its inner surface is modelled. A cyclic thermal loading is imposed on the tube. This loading is in agreement with experimental data. The crack propagates through the thickness. A prediction of the velocity of the crack is finally assessed using a Paris’ law type criteria. Finally, this combined experimental and numerical work on 304L austenitic stainless steel pipes will enable to improve existing methods to accurately predict the crack growth under cyclic thermal loadings in austenitic stainless steel pipe at the design stage.
