Automatic segmentation of the lungs in Chest X-ray images (CXRs) is a key step in the screening and diagnosis of related diseases. There are many opacities in the lungs in the CXRs of patients, which makes the lungs difficult to segment. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a segmentation algorithm based on U-Net. This article introduces variational auto-encoder (VAE) in each layer of the decoder-encoder. VAE can extract high-level semantic information, such as the symmetrical relationship between the left and right thoraxes in most cases. The fusion of the features of VAE and the features of convolution can improve the ability of the network to extract features. This paper proposes a three-terminal attention mechanism. The attention mechanism uses the channel and spatial attention module to automatically highlight the target area and improve the performance of lung segmentation. At the same time, the three-terminal attention mechanism uses the advanced semantics of high-scale features to improve the positioning and recognition capabilities of the attention mechanism, suppress background noise, and highlight target features. Experimental results on two different datasets show that the accuracy (ACC), recall (R), F1-Score and Jaccard values of the algorithm proposed in this paper are the highest on the two datasets, indicating that the algorithm in this paper is better than other state-of-the-art algorithms.

Automatic segmentation of the line-like regions plays a very important role in the automatic recognition system, such as automatic cracks recognition in X-ray images, automatic vessels segmentation in CT images. In order to automatically segment line-like regions in the X-ray/CT images, this paper presents a robust line filter based on the local gray level variation and multiscale analysis. The proposed line filter makes usage of the local gray level and its local variation to enhance line-like regions in the X-ray/CT image, which can well overcome the problems of the image noises and non-uniform intensity of the images. For detecting various sizes of line-like regions, an image pyramid is constructed based on different neighboring distances, which enables the proposed filter to analyze different sizes of regions independently. Experimental results showed that the proposed line filter can well segment various sizes of line-like regions in the X-ray/CT images, which are with image noises and non-uniform intensity problems.

Early detection of subtle fracture is important particularly for the senior citizens’ quality of life. Naked eye examination from X-ray image may cause false negatives due to operator subjectivity thus computer vision based automatic detection software is much needed in practice.  In this paper, we propose an automatic extraction method for suspisious wrist fracture regions. We apply K-means in pixel clustering to form the candidate part of possible fracture from wrist X-ray image automatically. This method can recover previously detected patterned false cases with edge detection method after fuzzy stretching. The proposed method is successful in 16 out of 20 tested cases in experiment.
