ABSTRACTStrain relaxation of GexSi1−x layers is studied as a function of growth temperature. Extremely thick coherently strained layers whose thicknesses exceed more than fifty times of the critical thicknesses predicted by Matthews and Blakeslee's model were successfully grown by MBE. There exits a narrow temperature window from 310 °C to 350 °C for growing this kind of high quality thick strained layers. Below this temperature window, the layers are poor in quality as indicated from RHEED patterns. Above this window, the strain of the layers relaxes very fast accompanied with a high density of misfit dislocations as the growth temperature increases. Moreover, for samples grown in this temperature window, the strain relaxation shows a dependence of the residual gas pressure, which has never been reported before.

The effect of high-boiling-point solvent addition on the morphology of low-p(O2) processed, sol-gel YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films is discussed. Proper selection and addition of a high-boiling-point solvent prevents film roughening during precursor pyrolysis, while permitting at least a tenfold reduction in pyrolysis time compared to standard film processing in air or O2. Use of such solvents appears to increase film plasticity, avoiding elastic compressive stress related buckling. High-quality YBCO films on 〈100〉 LaAlO3 with a critical current density (Jc) ∼ 3–4 MA/cm2 at 77 K, are routinely crystallized with this new sol-gel process. Diethanolamine-based, sol-gel YBCO films deposited on sol-gel SrTiO3-buffered 〈100〉 Ni have Jc(77 K) > 1 MA/cm2, demonstrating a route toward all-sol-gel superconducting wires.

ABSTRACTYBCO films prepared from metal trifluoroacetate (TFA) precursors on oxide-buffered textured non-magnetic substrates have achieved performance levels equaling that on oxide buffered textured Ni substrates. Critical current densities of 0.7 MA/cm2 to 1.0 MA/cm2 have been achieved in 0.4 µm thick YBCO films on short-length of CeO2/YSZ/Y2O3/Ni/Ni-13wt%Cr substrates. High-quality epitaxial buffers comprising a Ni layer, Y2O3 seed, YSZ barrier and CeO2 cap layers have been deposited over meter long tapes of deformation textured Ni and Ni-13%Cr using reel-to-reel processes. High-performance TFA-based YBCO films have been deposited on 0.1 m to 0.3 m lengths of these oxide buffered substrates using reel to reel processes. Critical current densities up to 1.0 MA/cm2 have been achieved in 0.4 µm thick YBCO films on CeO2/YSZ/Y2O3/Ni substrates. Using multiple coats of the metal trifluoroacetate precursors, thicker YBCO films have been demonstrated on oxide buffered substrates. Critical currents in excess of 100A/cm-width have been achieved for 1.2 µm -1.6 µm thick YBCO films on short lengths of CeO2/YSZ/Y2O3/Ni substrates.

In this investigation YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) films were fabricated via a metal acetate, trifluoroacetic acid based sol-gel route and spin-coat deposited on (100) LaAlO3 with a focus on maximizing Jc, while minimizing processing time. We demonstrate that the use of a low-pO2 atmosphere during the pyrolysis stage can lead to at least a tenfold reduction in pyrolysis time, compared to a 1 atm O2 ambient. High-quality YBCO films on LaAlO3, with Jc values up to 3 MA/cm2 at 77 K, can be routinely crystallized from these rapidly pyrolyzed films.

AbstractIon-beam assisted deposition was used to fabricate biaxially aligned cubic zirconia on flexible metal substrates. These films were used as templates for heteroepitaxially deposited YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) films. The quality of the crystalline texture of the template films has a direct influence on the superconducting properties of the final YBCO films. We describe our efforts to fabricate high-quality cubic zirconia templates on short-length substrates processed in stationary mode and meter-long substrates processed in continuous mode. Our best phi scan FWHM values for the films on the meter-long tapes were 12.6 degrees for the template and 6.1 degrees for the overcoated YBCO. This meter-long tape had a self-field, 75 K, superconducting critical current of 122 amps.
