The flow between a rotating disk and a stationary disk, with nonaxisymmetric boundary conditions is studied. A flow field of this type exists in the narrow gap between the rotor and side plates of a rotary vane compressor. Fluid is admitted into the gap in the center of the disk for the purpose of sealing against leakage due to the nonaxisymmetric pressure distribution externally imposed on the disk circumference. The flow is solved analytically by a perturbation technique. Flow maps and pressure maps are obtained for various operating conditions. The effectiveness of the fluid seal is evaluated for these conditions by calculating the flow rates that pass through the gap. The flow field is simulated on a test apparatus and experimental verification is given to the analytical results. The results obtained indicate the possibility of appreciably reducing the leakage through the gap by a proper selection of the fluid pressure and the disk geometry.

In this work, the same formulations of Nano-Silica/intumescent fire retardant polypropylene nanocomposites were prepared via a novel vane extruder and a tri-screw extruder, which represented elongational flow field and shearing flow field, respectively. Not only the synergistic combustion mechanisms of Kissinger method and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method were revealed, but also the combustion effect and efficiency were compared. Both two methods proved specimens that processed by TE exhibited higher thermal stability. The smaller aggregates of physical initial Nano-Silica, the better dispersivity of aggregates in specimens that processed by VE. Such property broke the compactness degree of char layer.

We classify the equilibrium solutions of the Smoluchowski equation for dipolar (extended) rigid nematic polymers under imposed elongational flow. The Smoluchowski equation couples the Maier-Saupe short-range interaction, dipole-dipole interaction, and an external elongational flow. We show that all stable equilibria of rigid, dipolar rod dispersions under imposed uniaxial elongational flow field are axisymmetric. This finding of axisymmetry significantly simplifies any procedure of obtaining experimentally observable equilibria.

This paper describes an experimental technique which allows estimates of local turbulent properties of a shear layer to be obtained without the necessity of inserting a probe into the flow field. The probe is replaced by two beams of radiation, which pass through the entire flow field in two mutually perpendicular directions. It is shown that, although each beam independently reflects only an integral of the flow properties along the entire path between the source and detector, the covariance between the two detected signals does yield local turbulent information. To verify the validity of the technique, experimental results are presented for the shear layer of a subsonic jet and are shown to be in good agreement with published hot-wire data.
