We present the formal geometric derivation of a non-equilibrium growth model that takes the form of a parabolic partial differential equation. Subsequently, we study its stationary radial solutions by means of variational techniques. Our results depend on the size of a parameter that plays the role of the strength of forcing. For small forcing we prove the existence and multiplicity of solutions to the elliptic problem. We discuss our results in the context of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

Sagawa and Ueda established a fluctuation theorem of information exchange by revealing the role of correlations in stochastic thermodynamics and unified the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of measurement and feedback control. They considered a process where a non-equilibrium system exchanges information with other degrees of freedom such as an observer or a feedback controller. They proved the fluctuation theorem of information exchange under the assumption that the state of the other degrees of freedom that exchange information with the system does not change over time while the states of the system evolve in time. Here we relax this constraint and prove that the same form of the fluctuation theorem holds even if both subsystems co-evolve during information exchange processes. This result may extend the applicability of the fluctuation theorem of information exchange to a broader class of non-equilibrium processes, such as a dynamic coupling in biological systems, where subsystems that exchange information interact with each other.

Since 13C is believed to be produced by non-equilibrium CNO processing in stellar evolution (Truran 1977), measurements of the carbon ratio Rc ≡ [12C] / [13C] in the interstellar medium may provide important information on nucleo-synthesis. Commonly, the ratio (N13/N18)LTE ≡ [13CO/C18O]LTE is measured and from this RLTE ≡ [12CO/13CO]LTE is deduced and these values are often identified with Rc. However, this line of reasoning can be misleading for two reasons (Dickman et al. 1979):(1) The difficulty of determining accurate column densities, [13C16O] and [12C18O], because of the complexity of the radiative transfer problem;(2) The possible role of fractionation, whereby RCO ≡ [12CO] / [13CO] does not necessarily reflect the initial atomic abundance ratio RC (Watson et al. 1976, Langer 1977, Liszt 1978).
