In this paper, some methodologies aimed at the identification of the Pareto front of a multi-objective optimization problem are presented and applied. Three different approaches are presented: local sampling, Pareto front resampling and Normal Boundary Intersection (NBI). A first approximation of the Pareto front is obtained by a regular sampling of the design space, and then the Pareto front is improved and enriched using the other two above mentioned techniques. A detailed Pareto front is obtained for an optimization problem where algebraic objective functions are applied, also in comparison with standard techniques. Encouraging results are also obtained for two different ship design problems. The use of the algebraic functions allows for a comparison with the real Pareto front, correctly detected. The variety of the ship design problems allows for a generalization of the applicability of the methodology.

By weighing reliability, maintainability, availability and life-cycle cost of equipment which are influenced by testability,the testability indexes of system level BIT are determined on the basis of maximum system reliability & maintainability and minimum the life-circle cost. The influence mathematical models of system reliability, maintainability, availability and life-circle cost are established. According to these mathematical models, the multi-objective optimization model of system-level BIT testability indexes is established. The multi-objective optimization model is solved using Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, and the validity of the multi-objective optimization model is proved through an example.

Various engineering design problems are formulated as constrained multi-objective optimization problems. One of the relevant and popular methods that deals with these problems is the weighted method. However, the major inconvenience with its application is that it does not yield a well distributed set. In this study, the use of the Normal Boundary Intersection approach (NBI) is proposed, which is effective in obtaining an evenly distributed set of points in the Pareto set. Given an evenly distributed set of weights, it can be strictly shown that this approach is absolutely independent of the relative scales of the functions. Moreover, in order to ensure the convergence to the Global Pareto frontier, NBI approach has to be aligned with a global optimization method. Thus, the following paper suggests NBI-Simulated Annealing Simultaneous Perturbation method (NBI-SASP) as a new method for multiobjective optimization problems. The study shall test also the applicability of the NBI-SASP approach using different engineering multi-objective optimization problems and the findings shall be compared to a method of reference (NSGA). Results clearly demonstrate that the suggested method is more efficient when it comes to search ability and it provides a well distributed global Pareto Front.
