The objective of the study was to investigate influence of emergent strategic management mode on performance (sales) of SMEs in Machakos Town, Machakos County. Descriptive research design was employed to ensure a complete description of the situation of SMEs performance in Machakos town. The target population was 16,399 licensed SMEs in Machakos Town. These SMEs where grouped into eight categories.Using stratified random sampling method,a sample of 390 respondents was selected from the target population.Data was collected using questionnaires design to obtain accurate information from respondents. Collected data was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Due to non-normality and non-homogeneity of the dependent variable,a non-parametric test (Mann-Whitney U test) was prefered instead of a parametric test (t-test).Under this test, the data was categorized into low users of each strategy and high users of each strategy.  The findings were presented using tables, figures, pie charts and graphs. The  results indicated that SMEs which applies emergent strategy practices tend to have higher performance. Thus we conclude that emergent strategy practices positively influence performance of SMEs in Machakos Town. The study findings help SMEs strengthen their operations to ensure that the SMEs have a  competitive edge to match their counterparts across other counties. The  study recommends the need to have owners/managers of the small and medium enterprises undertake basic business and management skills training. Training the senior managers give opportunity to learn strategic management skills which will be valuable in their daily operations.

Co-opetition is cooperation and also the competition between businesses in the same industry or in other words between competitors. The phenomenon of co-opetition, which is also called ‘sleeping with the enemy’, is becoming increasingly important with the wider of global competition. The purpose of research presented in this paper is to analyze the co-opetition strategy among small and medium industries. This research was conducted in the form of case studies of small and medium batik industries in the region of Central Java, Indonesia. The right co-opetition strategy would promote growth and strengthen the sustainability of Central Java batik SMEs to face global competition. The research approach applied is action research. The location of this research is in six districts in Central Java, namely Banyumas, Cilacap, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Kebumen and Wonosobo. In those six districts, there are batik SMEs that have the potential to grow rapidly. The results of this study indicate that batik SMEs in the region of Central Java agreed to collaborate in the form of the Central Java Batik Society 'DjamurDwipa'. The batik SME entrepreneurs in Central Java realize that they are partners in the Society and they are also competitors engaged in the same industry. For small and medium scale entrepreneurs, their collaboration is expected to increase their capability, create and capture value, get the benefit of networking. The Central Java Batik Society 'DjamurDwipa' in this study becomes one of the case models of co-opetition among small and medium industries. Review of the co-opetition among small and medium industries in this study indicate that the competitors do not always have a negative impact. Collaboration with competitors, namely co-opetition, could be able to create a synergy that can encourage the growth of small and medium industries. Keywords: Co-opetition; Colaboration; Competitor; Batik; Small Medium Enterprises.

Training for small and medium enterprises, especially in the context of leadership and digitalisation, has been traditionally carried out in form of presence workshops. Like other learning and training offers, this type of training needed to be carried out virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing advantages as well as disadvantages. Furthermore, the purpose of such courses is typically to convey a curriculum of preselected content and skills previously deemed useful. This paper presents the experiences from a mini-course on digital leadership carried out virtually during the pandemic that aims to incorporate SME needs in an agile manner. The presented mini-course is being developed using action research approach and aims to provide input for designing training in this context beyond the current crisis. The findings show high acceptance by the participants for the 100% virtual format and the effectiveness of the pilot run was proven to increase the digital skills of the participants. Engaging participants in order to reflect their needs has proven challenging and will be considered in the next action iteration.

ObjectivesTo clarify the process of how caregivers in a nursing home integrate the perspectives of rehabilitation into their responsibilities through working with a physical therapist.DesignThis study was conducted under an action research approach.SettingThe target facility was a nursing home located in Japan. The researcher, a physical therapist, worked at the nursing home once a week from April 2016 to March 2017. During the study period, he created field notes focused on the dialogue and action of caregivers regarding care, responses of caregivers to the physical therapist and reflections as a physical therapist. Caregivers were also given a short informal interview about their relationship with the nursing home residents. For data analysis, two researchers discussed the content based on the field notes, consolidating the findings.ParticipantsThe participants were caregivers who worked at the target facility. Thirty-eight caregivers agreed to participate. Average age was 39.6±11.1 years, 14 (37%) were male and average caregiver experience was 9.8 years.ResultsTwo cycles of action research were conducted during the study period. There were four stages in the process of how caregivers in the nursing home integrated the perspectives of rehabilitation through their work with the physical therapist. First, caregivers resisted having the rehabilitation programme carried out in the unit because they perceived that rehabilitation performed by a physical therapist was a special process and not under their responsibility. However, the caregivers were given a shared perspective on rehabilitation by the physical therapist, which helped them to understand the meaning of care to adapt the residents’ abilities to their daily life. They practised resident-centred care on a trial basis, although with a sense of conflict between their new and previous role, which emphasised the safety of residents’ lives and personhood. The caregivers increased their self-efficacy as their knowledge and skills were supplemented by the physical therapist and his approval of their attempted care. They were then able to commit to their newly conceived specialty of care as a means of supporting the lives of residents.ConclusionsThe process of working with a physical therapist led to a change in caregivers’ perception and behaviours, which occurred in four stages: resistance to incorporation, recapture of other perspectives, conflicts and trials in the role of caregiver and transformation to a resident-centred perspective.

This article describes the use of a participatory action research (PAR) approach to developing a self-management resource for persons living with dementia and care partners. Despite growing evidence that persons with dementia are able to contribute in meaningful ways to decision-making about their care and life preferences, few opportunities exist for them to participate in the design of resources and services meant for them. There is also a need to support the self-management of persons living with dementia with the provision of accurate, high quality, user-friendly information. The Living Well with Dementia resource was developed through a partnership with persons with dementia, family members, Alzheimer Society representatives, primary care providers, and researchers. The methods used in the development of this resource are outlined in six steps employed in this process, from establishment of a PAR team to final resource creation. Informed by a whole systems approach, the resource brings together essential components of self-management into a comprehensive system of care and support for living. It empowers users to be active participants in the application of new knowledge to their lives. Better self-management has important implications for access to health care and quality of life for persons with dementia and care partners.

The study examines the determinant factors that influence financial inclusion among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ethiopia. The study uses an explanatory research design and a mixed research approach with both primary and secondary sources of data. More specifically, the study adopts a multiple linear regression model. The finding of the study reveals that; supply-side factors, demand-side factors, market opportunity, and collateral requirements have a positive effect on the firm’s access to finance. On the other hand, institutional framework factors, and the costs of borrowing negatively affect the firm’s access to finance. This study suggests concerned bodies sustain rapid and inclusive economic growth and hence eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, the policymakers must build an efficient, strong, and well-functioning financial market system that provides affordable and sustainable financial service to SMEs.
