The fourth industrial revolution and accompanying digital transformation has progressed dramatically in recent years. The new digital revolution, mostly known as Industry 4.0, introduces impressive changes in the way enterprises and organizations are operating in a globalized world and altering the well-established lifestyle of a society. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to identify the current capabilities of companies in the context of Industry 4.0. Current literature on Industry 4.0 maturity and assessment models underlies the importance of a proper development strategy with exact steps to perform. Design principles address the issue of systematizing the measurable and attainable steps for further development. The present study contributes towards the identification of the research gap in the presence of core Industry 4.0 design principles during the development of maturity models. The analysis of 12 chosen maturity models by eight core design principles was provided. This research can serve as a starting point for the development of a complex strategic roadmap and thereby to provide a successful transition from traditional manufacturing into Industry 4.0.

The shift towards Industry 4.0 is a fundamental driver of improved changes observed in today’s business organizations. The difficulties in adapting to this new approach pose challenges for many companies especially in the oil and gas (O&G) upstream sector. To make this path much feasible for companies in this industry, Maturity Models (MMs) are very useful tools in achieving this following their use in evaluation of the initial state of a company for planned development journey towards Industry 4.0 (I4.0) readiness and implementation. Study shows that only a limited number of O&G specific roadmaps, MMs, frameworks and readiness assessments are available today. This paper aims to review the currently available Industry 4.0 MMs for manufacturing industries and analyze their applicability in the O&G upstream sector using the systematic literature review (SLR) methodology, recognizing the specific requirements of this industry. The study looks at the key characteristic for O&G sector in relation to the manufacturing sector and identifies research gaps needed to be addressed to successfully support the O&G sector in readiness for Industry 4.0 implementation. An Industry 4.0 maturity model that reflects the industrial realities for the O&G upstream sector more accurately from insights drawn from the reviews of existing MMs is proposed. This reduces the challenges of the transition process towards Industry 4.0 and provides support for the critical change desired for improved efficiency in the sector.

This chapter is going through the Industry 4.0 concept. On the first hand, it relies on advanced technologies which have a high potential to save costs and deliver groundbreaking products and services. On the other hand, Industry 4.0 brings so many innovations and opportunities that it requires an essential change in thinking and organization. Presented insights are based on conducted comparative analysis and its results. This analysis compared significant maturity models for the assessment of Industry 4.0 readiness in organizations and defined universal dimensions. These identified dimensions uncovered existing gaps in the analyzed maturity models. Solving these missing areas required additional research that provided additional insights not only in Industry 4.0. The results of this analysis provided an overview of critical factors related to Industry 4.0 and possible solutions to missing parts. The technical challenges related to technologies, standards, and architectures used in Industry 4.0 are introduced. Organizational specifics of this concept are outlined.

Industry 4.0 has managed to attract lots of attention from researchers because of the benefits it has to offer and many studies about Industry 4.0, as well as readiness and maturity models, are available from the technological point of view. Meanwhile, the organizational culture dimension of Industry 4.0 has received little to no attention. The aim of this paper is to find out whether or not the size and type of an organization influence the innovative culture and consequently the readiness of the organization for implementing industry 4.0. Results show that the innovative organizational culture according to the index of organizational culture does not depend on the size of an organization but to some degree depends on the type of the organization.

Manufacturing enterprises are currently facing many challenges of industrial revolution 4.0 when beginning to change the production model, working with embedded systems which can collect and transmit specific data. The application of maturity models to the Industry 4.0 may help organizations to address the challenges regarding the concept of Industry 4.0 and the diversification methodology. This research is going to examine the application of a maturity model for assessing Industry 4.0 created by Schumacher et al. (2016). The Maturity model of Schumacher et al. (2016) was built to assess the maturity and to infiltrate of the enterprises manufacturing into the Industry 4.0. The purpose of this paper is examining the applicable of using the Maturity model in evaluating the maturity of industrial enterprises in Vietnam toward industry 4.0. The issues will be addressed in this paper: i) The nature of Industry 4.0 and challenges for the manufacturing enterprises; ii) The Maturity model for manufacturing enterprises towards Industry 4.0; iii) The process of applying Maturity model in assessing the manufacturing enterprise towards Industry 4.0; iv) Some initial recommendations for Vietnamese manufacturing enterprises and v) Conclusion.

This article analyzes the available readiness indexes and maturity models applied for trends designated as “4.0”, with a focus on Industry 4.0, primarily within the countries of Europe. Based upon it, the available indexes and maturity models are organized into the individual layers of the metamodel; a proposal for this metamodel is this article’s main output. Simultaneously, as-yet-uncovered places for the development of existing maturity models, as well as space for further detailed research into the application of Industry 4.0 in theory and in practice, are identified on the basis of this metamodel.
