The Topsails igneous suite contains several Late Ordovician to Early Silurian volcanic and intrusive sequences, which overlie and intrude Early to Middle Ordovician oceanic and arc rocks. The oldest components of this suite may represent calc-alkaline, continental-arc magmatism. The younger components are bimodal, with felsic compositions vastly predominating, and include a major (> 2200 km2) alkaline (A-type) granite complex. These felsic components have similarities to peralkaline suites formed in unusual subduction-related settings. Younger mafic components resemble within-plate basalts emplaced in a continental setting.Silurian magmatic activity in the Canadian Appalachians is widespread, includes diverse magmatic types, and has contrasting metamorphic and tectonic overprinting, even in contiguous areas. These features and the probability of major post-Silurian displacements in the orogen render correlation and interpretation difficult. Tectonic models that consider basin closure and major plate movements to be complete by Middle Ordovician time fail to adequately explain the Silurian activity. Available data best fit a model that relates Late Ordovician to Silurian magmatic activity to the opening and closing of small, discontinuous basins, portions of which may have been floored by oceanic crust.

Abstract The late Indosinian Darongshan granite complex (Guangxi Province, South China) consists mainly of three plutons (Taima, Jiuzhou and Darongshan), with coarse-grained to subvolcanic rock types. There is a rough mineral evolution from the western to the eastern part of the complex, with ferromagnesian magmatic silicates sequentially distributed : Opx+Crd±Bt (Taima), Opx+Grt+Bt+Crd (Jiuzhou) and Bt+Crd (Darongshan). Restitic, cumulative or xenocrystic minerals (mainly Crd with fibrolite+spinel inclusions, Grt and probably Opx in some cases) are also encountered. Mineralogical, chemical and isotopic compositions of the granites suggest that the three plutons derive from a source dominated by a reduced, immature greywacke-psammite series, which has experienced high-amphibolite to granulite-facies metamorphism. This S-type granite complex is considered to result from various degrees of melting at different crustal levels by biotite dehydration-melting in a high T (800° to 950°C), low P (400–600 MPa) metamorphic environment. Abundant granulite-facies metasedimentary enclaves with refractory compositions are considered as xenoliths entrapped during magma ascent. The presence of scarce mafic microgranular enclaves and the high temperatures needed for melting could suggest that heat may have been partly contributed by mantle-derived magmas.

SummaryThe treatment of femoral head necrosis of adults is still rather problematic. Conservative treatment has been reported relatively unsuccessful and surgical treatment does not show convincing results either. The most effective seems to be a surgical treatment in early stages of the disease, however, the diagnosis still remains relatively complicated. For the late stages (2B and above) the most effective treatment option is represented by core decompression and vascular grafting. However, drilling and plombage (especially when using press-fit technique) seems to be successful, although not excellent. The authors describe their own method of drilling and plombage of the necrotic zone of the femoral head in 41 patients with X-ray detected necrotic changes of the femoral head. The pain measured by VAS was seen to decrease after surgery in all patients significantly. The Jacobs score was also observed to have increased (from fair to good outcome). We have not observed any large femoral head collapse after surgery, moreover, in some cases an improvement of the round shape of the femoral head was seen. It is important to mention that in all cases femoral heads with existing necrotic changes (flattening or collapse) were treated. Although the clinical improvement after surgery was not significantly high, the method we describe is a safe and simple method of diminishing pain in attempt to prepare the femoral head for further treatment in a future, without significant restriction of the indication due to necrosis (osteochondroplasty, resurfacing, THR).

In order to expand the knowledge about neuronal organization of the cognitive functions required for understanding plastic processes in the brain, we investigated the cholinergic synaptic organization of learning and memory functions in rats with different cognitive abilities. Methods. Rats were trained on a contextual situation model in the Morris water maze. At 2-3 days after the end of training, animals were decapitated, and subfractions of synaptic membranes and synaptoplasm of light and heavy synaptosomes were isolated from the cortex and the hippocampus by centrifugation. In synaptic subfractions, activity of the key enzyme of cholinergic neurons, choline acetyltransferase, was measured. We compared the test results (latent period to reach the hidden platform) and the enzyme activity in capable (lower quartile) and incapable of learning rats (upper quartile). Results. The following was found: 1) differences in the cholinergic organization of studied functions in capable and uncapable of learning rats during training, including: positive correlations of choline acetyltransferase activity in synapses of projection neurons in the cortex of capable rats with latency to reach the platform at intermediate stages of training and in the hippocampus ofincapable rats at late stages of training; multidirectional correlations of choline acetyltransferase activity in synapses of hippocampal, presumably, interneurons (heavy synaptosomes) in capable and incapable rats at early and late stages of training; 2) distinctness of the cholinergic organization of functions at all stages of training. Conclusions. The study demonstrated for the first time a specificity of the cholinergic organization of functions in spatial situational learning of rats with strong and poor learning abilities and a selective role of hippocampal cholinergic interneurons at the initial stage of learning and in memory consolidation.
