Alcohols are very important additives and played a measure role as co-surfactants in various industrial and research applications. While, Gemini surfactants are mainly used as effective emulsifiers, antifoaming agents, bactericidal agents, coating agents and corrosion inhibitors etc.  Therefore, it is important to study about the variations in alkanol concentrations which affects the aggregation number and other related parameters. Surface properties of gemini surfactant butanediyl-1,4-bis(dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (12-4-12) has been studied by using fluorescence method. This method has been used to calculate the aggregation number (Nagg) and the other related parameters like dielectric constant (D), Stern Volmer binding constant (KSV) of mixed system. This method is also very important for the calculation of the micropolarity of the mixed system (gemini/alcohol). The micropolarity has been obtained with the help of the ratio of intensity of peaks (I1/I3) of the pyrene fluorescence emission spectrum. Cetylpridinium chloride and pyrene were used as quencher and probe, respectively. Keywords: Gemini surfactant, special alcohols, aggregation number, micropolarity

The inhibitive synergistic effect between a cationic gemini surfactant, 1,2-ethane-bis(dimethyl dodecylammonium bromide) (designed as 12-2-12), and anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) for the corrosion inhibition of A3 carbon steel in 1 mol L-1 HCl was investigated by weight loss. The inhibition system composed by 12-2-12 and SDS is efficient. The adsorption mechanism of the 12-2-12 and SDS on steel in acidic medium is discussed on the basis of experimental data and an adsorption model is proposed. Adsorption of inhibitor system on the A3 carbon steel surface in acidic medium obeys Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm.

AbstractA novel cationic gemini surfactant has been readily synthesised in 70 % total yield. The functional gemini surfactant can act both as an emulsifier and an atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) initiator in mini-emulsion polymerisation of methyl methacrylate (MMA), in which no other emulsifier was required. 1-(Dimethylamino)dodecane (N,N-dimethyldodecylamine, DMDA) was found to be a good ligand in the activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) ATRP reaction. Kinetic studies indicated that the polymerisation featured controlled/living radical polymerisation.

Cationic Gemini surfactant concentration, the inorganic salts added and the pH value of surface tension obtained cationic gemini surfactant critical micelle concentration is 0.4mmol / L;by adding three kinds of inorganic salts NaCl, MgCl2, and Na2SO4 ,which Na2SO4 has the greatest impact on surface tension, followed by MgCl2.The surface minimum tension of the pH ranged from 9 to 11 , indicating that the surface activity of cationic gemini surfactants achieved the highest.
