Abstract This paper presents an averaged state model and the design of nonlinear observers for an on/off pneumatic actuator. The actuator is composed of two chambers and four on/off solenoid valves. The elaborated averaged state model has the advantage of using only one continuous input instead of four binary inputs. Based on this new model, a high gain observer and a sliding mode observer are designed using the piston position and the pressure measurements in one of the chambers. Finally, their closed-loop performances are verified and compared on an experimental benchmark.

AbstractThis paper deals with the problem of simultaneous concentration and faults estimations of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) subject to unknown inputs. We propose a combination of two robust nonlinear observers for state estimation and fault reconstruction without any use of a linear approximation of the CSTR dynamic model. Based on the high-gain observer, the proposed scheme can guarantee the asymptotic estimation of the concentration inside the reactor, while, a robust term is added to the nominal plant on the basis of the super-twisting algorithm for fault reconstruction. The stability analysis is proved mathematically using the Lyapunov theory. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed scheme are illustrated via simulations.

Micro-diffraction based crystallography is essential to the design and development of many classes of ‘crafted materials’. Although the scanning electron microscope can provide crystallographic information with high spatial resolution, its current utility is severely limited by the low sensitivity of existing diffraction techniques (ref: Dingley). Previously, Joy showed that energy filtering increased contrast and pattern visibility in electron channelling. This present paper discribes the effect of energy filtering on EBSP sensitivity and backscattered SEM imaging.The EBSP detector consisted of an electron energy filter, a microchannel plate detector, a phosphor screen, optical coupler, and a slow scan CCD camera. The electrostatic energy filter used in this experiment was constructed as a cone with 5 coaxial electrodes. The angular field-of-view of the filter was approximately 38°. The microchannel plate, which was the initial sensing component, had high gain and had 50% to 80% detection efficiency for the low energy electrons that passed through the retarding field filter.

A commercial noise dose meter was used to estimate the equivalent noise dose received through high-gain hearing aids worn in a school for deaf children. There were no significant differences among nominal SSPL settings and all SSPL settings produced very high equivalent noise doses, although these are within the parameters of previous projections.

Femtocell networks have been proposed for indoor communications as the extension of cellular networks for enhancing coverage performance. Because femtocells have small coverage radius, typically from 15 to 30 meters, a femtocell user (FU) walking at low speed can still make several femtocell-to-femtocell handovers during its connection. When performing a femtocell-to-femtocell handover, femtocell selection used to select the target handover femtocell has to be able not only to reduce unnecessary handovers and but also to support FU’s quality of service (QoS). In the paper, we propose a femtocell selection scheme for femtocell-tofemtocell handover, named Mobility Prediction and Capacity Estimation based scheme (MPCE-based scheme), which has the advantages of the mobility prediction and femtocell’s available capacity estimation methods. Performance results obtained by computer simulation show that the proposed MPCE-based scheme can reduce unnecessary femtocell-tofemtocell handovers, maintain low data delay and improve the throughput of femtocell users.
