We are living in times of unprecedented global change and upheaval and over the next ten to 20 years governments, organisations and individuals will face increasing difficulties in an environment of growing complexity, heightened uncertainty and a quickening pace of change. The concept of sustainable development implies the reconciliation of long‐term socio‐economic development, environmental protection and quality of life; essentially it is concerned with the future. Unfortunately, the potential for linking “futures thinking” to debates about sustainable development at local and regional government levels is relatively undeveloped, particularly in Ireland. Responding to this challenge, The Futures Academy at Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland, was established in January 2003 to provide both a research and consultancy forum for future‐proofing policies and strategies using the “prospective through scenarios” methodology. This paper describes the evolution of sustainable development in Ireland and the generic field of futures thinking, with particular focus on the prospective process which may assist key local policy makers and stakeholders move towards sustainable development for future generations in Ireland.

Indicadores. Transposição.Abstract: Sustainable development challenges society to use practices that ensure the quality of life of both current and future generations. The goal of sustainable agriculture is to exert the least possible impact on the environment. The sustainability of agricultural practices can be inferred with the use of indicators designed to monitor farming methods to obtain data that determine whether the methods employed are sustainable as well as identify aspects that need to be improved. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify the sustainability index of farming production among families assisted by the São Francisco River transposition project in the municipality of São José de Piranhas in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The study was conducted in productive rural communities of the municipality between October 2nd, 2017 and June 30th, 2018. Data collection involved the administration of a questionnaire. The results indicate that farmers assisted by the transposition project do not use sustainable farming practices. The analysis of the data revealed that family farming practices in the rural communities have low economic (0.10), technical-agronomic (0.49), management (0.03), ecological (0.06) and institutional-political (0.13) indices. Based on the methods employed in the present study, all indicators point to low sustainability. Keywords: Sustainable development. Agricultural production. Indicators. Transposition.

The purpose of this study has been to identify the degree of sustainability in the development of the Province of Warmia and Mazury. The theoretical and empirical investigations were conducted between 2003-2014 based on data from the Local Data Bank. Using a comparative indicator method, 20 indicators were developed, with different directions of preference. The evaluation involves the concept of uniform preference, hence the higher the assessment indicator, the better the situation in the evaluated area unit. Our studies on the sustainable development of the Province of Warmia and Mazury suggest that the indicators measuring the environmental dimension and consequently the quality of life of the residents (in this aspect) score higher than the country's average values. It is also optimistic that some progress, however small, can be seen in this area based on the analyzed dynamics of changes.

Abstract More than 26 million people are recognized globally as refugees and have been forced to flee from their home countries because of poverty, human rights violations, natural disasters, climate change, and other social and political conflicts. What is more, most host communities are usually poor and face social and economic crises. This is why supporting integration between refugees and host communities is imperative at the global humanitarian context. Thereby, this research presents the NAUTIA (Need Assessment under a Technological Interdisciplinary Approach) methodology, an innovative mixed-method approach designed by the Platform on Refugees of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The main objective of NAUTIA is to identify the basic needs of refugees and locals to improve their quality of life through interdisciplinary and inclusive intervention proposals based on technology. The methodology was applied in the permanent Shimelba Refugee Camp (Ethiopia), where energy, shelter, and food security solutions have resulted essential to improve the living conditions of both population groups. The results are useful for researchers, stakeholders, and practitioners from the humanitarian sector as they provide a more innovative and comprehensive way to support the unprecedented global human mobility there is nowadays.

Survivors of stroke suffer impairments associated with a complex need of care from healthcare services after being discharged from hospital and returning home, and these impairments affect the quality of their lives. This cross-sectional study, aimed at evaluating the pathways linking home care services, patient factors, and quality of life (QOL), was carried out by conducting interviews and questionnaires with stroke survivors at their homes. Simple random sampling was used to select the settings for data collection, and multi-stage sampling was used to select the samples. In all, 317 stroke survivors admitted to 13 hospitals in rural and urban setting were selected for participation in the study. The data obtained were analyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The hypothetical model demonstrated a good fit (chi-square = 15.299, df = 9, p = 0.083, GFI = 0.98, CFI = 0.98, RMSEA = 0.047). Statistically significant explanatory variables for the home care service had a direct effect on perceived self-management support, functional status, and QOL (β = 0.39, 0.12 and 0.11, respectively), while number of community supporters had a significant positive indirect effect on QOL through functional status (β = 0.13). The variables accounted for 56 % of the variance in QOL. This finding could be used by policy makers to make important policy development in home care services and help improve health outcomes. In particular, it is also recommended that policy makers push for policies that encompass self-management support and community support groups among stroke survivors in community settings.
