AbstractOrganizations seeking to improve their performance, like Corporate Social Responsibility targets, face a key organisational design challenge. Designing the key components of the organization and their layout will have major impact on performances, and needs thus a robust design process. Organisation theory provides several models and methods to answer that need. Yet this design process has not been confronted to design methods literature, such as systematic design. The aim of this paper is to provide a synthesis of multiple theoretical elements coming from organization sciences, confronted with a classical engineering design model, to reveal similarities, differences and lacks of current literature on organization design. Our analysis of the available literature on organisation theory, organisation design and change management showed that this design process is close to systematic design, but we also highlighted several breaks in the design process, such as the lack of functional approach.

Kata kunci: Berpikir, Kompetisi, Kemampuan, Siswa, Teknologi ABSTRACT Education at an early age is an interesting phenomenon at this time in Indonesia, can be seen from the mushrooming of educational parks for children who have not been able to go to school. Riau Islands Province (Riau Islands) whose location is directly adjacent to the International Gates of Singapore and Malaysia is indirectly requested to be able to compete in soft skills and hard skills. To face this opportunity and create a generation that is able to compete globally, the Department of Electrical Engineering, Raja Ali Haji Maritime University (UMRAH) through the three-tridharma of higher education, in collaboration with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) section of the Banyan Tree Hotel and Resorts Bintan, produced a program called Edutech for Children (EfC). EfC is a program to improve students 'ability to think critically and analyze at an early age through the introduction of the engineering design process and training of engineers' mindsets for students in schools. Starting from the ethnographic process, brainstorming, determining the main problems and solutions and designing using Autodesk Inventor's 3-dimensional software. An innovation which is an outcome of the engineering design process is the result of a design process based on the user using an ethnographic approach, therefore through training provided students will be invited to be able to understand that an innovation requires the integration of broad thinking skills towards problems exist in the community. With this activity, satisfying results are evidenced by increasing technical ability and the emergence of innovative mindsets so that students are able to find and design technologies that are suitable for local needs. Students learning design engineering at times need a good example of procedure for novel design engineering. The systematic heuristic-strategic use of a theory to guide the design process – Engineering Design Science – and the methodical design process followed in this case study is only necessary in limited situations. The full procedure should be learned, such that the student can select appropriate parts for other applications. Creativity is usually characterized by a wide search for solutions, especially those that are innovative. The search can be helped by this systematic and methodical approach. This case example is presented to show application of the recommended method, and the expected scope of the output, with emphasis on the stages of conceptualizing. The case follows a novel design problem of a mechanism to open and close the bow thruster covers for the Caravan Stage Barge.

The University of Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge program is an experiential learning opportunity in which youth work with adult volunteers to create Rube Goldberg influenced machines to address real-world issues. The program components are designed to help youth develop STEM work skills using an Engineering Design Process, increase interest in STEM content knowledge, and explore STEM career interests/aspirations. Evaluation indicates a majority of participants learn the engineering design process, principles of mechanical engineering, teamwork, public speaking, and problem solving. Programmatic outcomes and supports provide for the successful replication, adaptation, and implementation in both formal and non-formal learning environments.

Abstract The functional approach utilizes a ‘Functional Design Tree’, which is a decomposition hierarchy of functions involving sub-functions of an engineering system at various levels of resolution. Use of functional approach in the design of mechatronic systems is investigated in the senior level mechanical engineering design projects. A survey is conducted on the senior mechanical engineering students after an engineering design course. It is attempted to find out whether the students followed the systematic design approach, and to what extent they used the functional design tree. The results of the survey are presented and evaluated in the paper, and some conclusions are derived for possible outcomes of the survey.

Abstract – Engineering design is a core aspect of engineering education. Students might not appreciate the importance of engineering design early on, especially in the first term of their academic study. In this paper, we propose an approach for motivating students to think early about engineering design, namely at the start of their first academic term. The approach entails organizing an immersive design boot camp –“Design Days” – that replaces lectures for the first two days of the term. During the two days, students are divided into randomly assigned teams, and provided specifications to work on a design challenge. As part of the challenge, students are incentivized to fully understand the problem before attempting to solve it, instructed to follow a design process and apply iterative design, and asked to document their design and its rationale. The proposed method was successfully applied in Fall 2016. The approach will be applied again in Fall 2017 with minor modifications based on student feedback.

AbstractSustainability is a key issue for manufacturing companies, which detail in their annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports how they plan to operationalise the seventeen sustainable development goals set by the United Nations in 2016. Design is deemed particularly relevant to integrate sustainability issues, and many design for sustainability (DFS) approaches have developed since the 1980s. However, the lack of understanding of the relationship between CSR and design prevents DFS approaches from enabling sustainability issues to be integrated in the design process in a relevant manner with the CSR strategy of a company. Consequently, we developed a mapping methodology in order to provide a better understanding of the CSR-design relationship. This mapping methodology consists in (1) identifying the relevant CSR goals that can be managed during the design process, (2) gathering information about the links between these CSR goals and the design process through semi-structured interviews, and (3) building a map representing these links. We started to apply our mapping methodology in an application case in the automotive industry. The first results of this application are presented in this article.
