AbstractForty-two conodont species belonging to 26 genera, which span the middle Darriwilian to the earliest Sandbian interval, are documented from the Wolonggang and Hatuke Creek sections in the Wuhai area of Inner Mongolia, North China. This conodont fauna is dominated by cosmopolitan and widespread species and accompanied by several endemic taxa. Four conodont zones, the Dzikodus tablepointensis, Eoplacognathus suecicus, Pygodus serra, and P. anserinus Zones, and three subzones, the Pygodus lunnensis, P. anitae, and Yangtzeplacognathus foliaceus Subzones, are recognized. Because of its slope habitat, the conodont fauna of Wuhai area differs from the coeval faunas on the North China Platform, which reflect a shallower and warmer water environment, but is similar to the contemporaneous faunas in Baltoscandia, South China, and Tarim. Moreover, the studied sections share several stratigraphically diagnostic taxa with the counterparts of the North China Platform and Western Newfoundland, which makes it an effective link for biostratigraphic correlations both regionally and internationally. The stratigraphically regular occurrences of Spinodus spinatus, a good index of a deep-water environment, represent a Spinodus biofacies that agrees with the Ordovician paleo-tectonic regimes of North China.

Abstract Upper Ordovician strata exposed from the Baiyanhuashan section is the most representative Late Ordovician unit in the northwestern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). In total, 1,215 conodont specimens were obtained from 24 samples through the Wulanhudong and Baiyanhuashan formations at the Baiyanhuashan section. Thirty-six species belonging to 17 genera, including Tasmanognathus coronatus new species, are present. Based on this material, three conodont biozones—the Belodina confluens Biozone, the Yaoxianognathus neimengguensis Biozone, and the Yaoxianognathus yaoxianensis Biozone—have been documented, suggesting that the Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna has a stratigraphic range spanning the early to middle Katian. The Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna includes species both endemic to North China and widespread in tropical zones, allowing a reassessment of the previous correlations of the Katian conodont zonal successions proposed for North China with those established for shallow-water carbonate platforms at low latitudes. The Hadamengou gold deposit is located in the western segment of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). The mineralization age of the Hadamengou gold deposit is a matter of controversy. Based on the extensive collection the results of previous research, we infer that the Hadamengou gold deposit is exposed to prolonged geological evolution. It was formed as early as the Middle Hercynian orogen. The metallization mainly took place in the Early Indosinian epoch.

North China faces severe water scarcity—more than 40% of the annual renewable water resources are abstracted for human use. Nevertheless, nearly 10% of the water used in agriculture is employed in producing food exported to south China. To compensate for this ‘virtual water flow’ and to reduce water scarcity in the north, the huge south–north Water Transfer Project is currently being implemented. This paradox—the transfer of huge volumes of water from the water-rich south to the water-poor north versus transfer of substantial volumes of food from the food-sufficient north to the food-deficit south—is receiving increased attention, but the research in this field has not yet reached further than rough estimation and qualitative description. The aim of this paper is to review and quantify the volumes of virtual water flows between the regions in China and to put them in the context of water availability per region. The analysis shows that north China annually exports about 52 billion m 3 of water in virtual form to south China, which is more than the maximum proposed water transfer volume along the three routes of the Water Transfer Project from south to north.

The middle Ordovician of Pingliang area on the west margin of North-China platform is represented by a succession of deep-water sediments in which contourites are well-developed. Contour current deposits are well-developed. The contourites can be classified into:calcarenitic contourite, calcisiltitic contourite and calcilutitic contourite. Three typical contourite successions are recognized: complete contourite succession, incomplete contourite succession and contourite successions consisting only of calcarenitic contourites. According to the palaeocorrent and the palaeogeographic format analyse,carbonate contourite drift in the study area is unfolded crossing northwest-southeast, forwarding from southeast to northwest along the slope, and compared with other contourite drifts, it has some characteristics of coarser-grained sediment, thicker individual layers, and highly developed calcarenitic contourites and so on.

AbstractBased on geological studies, 141 rock analyses and 5 trace element analyses of metabasites, the present paper deals with the rock association, chemical features, protolith formation and the original tectonic settings upwards through the Lower Proterozoic metamorphic strata in the Dabieshan-Lianyungang area, in the south-east of the North China Platform. The results of the study indicate that the lower and middle parts of the metamorphic strata comprise terrigenous clastics, phosphoritic and aluminous sedimentary formations which formed under stable continental margin conditions. In the middle-upper part a calc-alkaline volcano-sedimentary formation under the active continental margin was developed. The Lower Proterozoic meta-strata of sedimentary-volcanosedimentary origin from bottom upwards suggest that the tectonic evolution of the south-eastern margin of the North China Platform is a process from stabilization to mobilization. This process suggests a northward subduction of the Yangtze Plate under the North China Plate during the later part of the early Proterozoic.
