A Note on Stibaropus tabulatus, Schiö. (Hem., Pent.), a new Pest of Tobacco in South India

Stibaropus tabulatus, Schiödte, a Pentatomid bug of the subfamily Cydninae, is remarkable in having the unusual habit of living underground and attacking the roots of tobacco, and to the best of the writer's knowledge this is the first record of this species as an insect of economic importance; though Lefroy has mentioned the allied S. molginus, Schiödte, in his “Indian Insect Life” (p. 674) as having been observed at the roots of a palm in South India at a considerable depth below the surface. As the insect under report was something of a novelty and was a pest of such a valuable crop like tobacco, the writer made special efforts to study its life-history and habits, and it is the aim of this paper to place on record the results of his observations and studies, though he regrets that they are somewhat fragmentary in character.

The grasshoppers of the subfamily Morabinae (Orthoptera: Eumastacidae) are infested by a braconid wasp, the first record of a hymenopterous primary parasite, other than egg parasites, of any grasshopper or locust. The braconid is a distinctive new species of euphorine and is described, with notes on its distribution and life history. Other parasites are briefly noted.

Red algae are the most conspicuous component in algal drifts that periodically arrive on the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula. Given the presence of agars and carrageenans in their cell wall and the synthesis of secondary metabolites that act as antitumors or antioxidants, most of these species are highly valued in the international market. However, in this region of Mexico they are not used but represent a problem of waste from beaches. Our aim was to determine the composition of marine red algae of economic use in the algal drifts of the Yucatan Peninsula, providing brief descriptions, photographs that facilitate their identification and possible explanations for their causes and routes of origin. 13 samplings were carried out at 14 sites, collecting fresh and complete thalli from which the species of economic importance were described. 24 species distributed in six orders and seven families were identified. The most abundant families for both the number of species and the amount of biomass were Gracilariaceae (10 species), Rhodomelaceae (6 species) and Solieriaceae (3 species). The localities with the greatest diversity and biomass were those belonging to Campeche: Sabancuy (11 species), Punta Xen (14 species), Tortuga Bay (13 species) and Playa Bonita (13 species). From the present study we contributed six new records endemic to Campeche, including the first record of the genus Codiophyllum for the Western Atlantic Ocean. Our data on diversity, biomass, periodicity and growth rates of red algal drifts allow us to suggest that the Campeche and Yucatan drifts are a sustainable source of raw material.

In the case of any harmful insect of economic importance, in order to war against it, or apply remedial measures at all intelligently, a knowledge of the life-history of the pest is necessary. This proposition will, I think, meet with such ready acceptance as to render proof unnecessary, but I might in illustration mention two cases which came under my own observation, where in the one case a knowledge of the round of life of the attacking insect saved a whole forest, and in the other proved of great importance.

A number of species of this genus of Encyrtid parasites are known to be, and others are suspected to be, secondary parasites ; but apparently the complete life-history has not been observed in any one case. As the genus has an almost world-wide distribution and is doubtless of considerable economic importance, the following observations made in Southern California in part of 1935 and 1936 are recorded.

Seeing that Glossina morsitans, the typical “tsetse” fly of writers on South Africa, has been well known for perhaps a longer period than any other member of the genus, it is a matter for great surprise that much of its life history is yet entirely unknown. A large mass of literature, dealing with its general habits, is extant, but the breeding habits and the larva have not been described. It is noteworthy that only last year a single specimen of the puparium was discovered for the first time, and when the wide distribution, the great plentitude, and the economic importance of the fly are considered, this becomes all the more remarkable.

The bee mimicking hover fly genus Volucella Geoffroy, 1762 and the potter wasp mimicking genus Monoceromyia Shannon, 1922 are reported for the first time from South India. Brief diagnosis of Volucella trifasciata Wiedemann, 1830 and Monoceromyia javana (Wiedemann, 1824), high-resolution images of the habitus and other important characters, as well as notes on their distribution, mimicry and biology are provided. Key words: Volucella, Monoceromyia, batesian mimicry, new record, range extension

Its morphology, life history, and biology are documented and compared with the single European speciesSpeolepta leptogaster(Winnertz). A further new species,Speolepta orientalissp.nov., is described based on a single male from northern Vietnam, representing the first record of this genus from the Oriental Region.
