AbstractA Neoproterozoic granite (Western Huhetaoergai granite) from the Northern Alxa region, southern Central Asia Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is first recognized by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb zircon dating (889±8 Ma). It is a highly fractionated potassium-rich calc-alkaline pluton with lowεNd(t) (−2.6 to −1.1) and high (87Sr/86Sr)t(0.727305–0.735626), and is probably derived from a mantle source and assimilated crustal rocks with very high87Sr/86Sr. Regional geology implies that it may reflect the existence of a microcontinent, and the formation of the Western Huhetaoergai granite is related to the assembly of Rodinia.

Internal standardization is employed to compensate for ionization suppression in inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). By examination of the response of over 50 elements to a sodium matrix under different operating conditions, it is apparent that an internal standard is most effective when it is close in mass and ionization energy to the analyte. The extent of suppression and the relative order of suppression of various analyte elements can differ for various matrix elements. Generally, precision was improved by the use of internal standardization; the extent of improvement differed for different analyte elements and operating conditions. A comparison between ICP-MS with ultrasonic and pneumatic nebulization is described. The ultrasonic nebulizer usually exhibits better sensitivity and detection limits for analyte elements, unless the extent of suppression induced by the concomitant matrix is very high.

Gallium is widely used in electronic industry and its current price is about 500 US dollars pro kilogram. It has been found that its contents are very high in Permo-Carboniferous coal of China. In order to look for valuable associated gallium deposits in coal, gallium contents of 177 coal samples were determined by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the data of 873 coal samples from Chinese Permo-Carboniferous coalfields were collected. The results show that the average gallium concentration of Chinese Permo-Carboniferous coals is 15.49μg·g−1. There are two concentration types of gallium in Chinese Permo-Carboniferous coals: One type is that gallium has enriched to an ore deposit, and another type is that gallium is locally enriched in coal seams, but has not formed a valuable associated gallium ore deposit. The gallium concentration in Chinese Permo-Carboniferous coal may have several different sources: concentration in sedimentation stage, magmatic hydrothermal inputs and low-temperature hydrothermal fluids.

<p>The article demonstrates the importance of using a suitable approach to compensate for dead time relate count losses (a certain measurement artefact) whenever short, but potentially strong transient signals are to be analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Findings strongly support the theory that inadequate time resolution, and therefore insufficient compensation for these count losses, is one of the main reasons for size underestimation observed when analysing inorganic nanoparticles using ICP-MS, a topic still controversially discussed.</p>
