New Late Cretaceous gastropods from the Pacific slope of North America

Two new genera and ten new species of shallow-marine, warm-water gastropods are reported from several Upper Cretaceous formations found between British Columbia and southern California. The buccinid Zaglenum new genus is represented by two new species and the turbinellid Fimbrivasum new genus is represented by three new species. The nododelphinulid Trochacanthus pacificus new species is the first record of this genus in the Western Hemisphere, and the procerthiid Nudivagus? califus new species could be the first record of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America. The xenophorid Xenophora (Endoptygma) hermax new species is only the second known Cretaceous species of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America, and this species establishes that Endoptygma Gabb, 1877, is a valid taxon. The neritid Otostoma sharonae new species is only the fourth known Cretaceous species of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America. The ringiculid Ringicula? (Ringiculopsis?) hesperiae new species is the first Campanian record of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America and the first recognition of this subgenus in this area.

Three new genera and six new species of shallow-marine gastropods are named from Upper Cretaceous strata found mainly in California. The trochidsCidarina cretaceanew species andCidarina betanew species, the ficidBulbificopsis garzanew genus and new species, and the cancellariidMataxa aridanew species are from the Maastrichtian part of the Moreno Formation of north-central California. This is the earliest record ofCidarina, whose previous chronologic range was middle Eocene to Recent.Bulbificopsisis the first record of a Cretaceous ficid from the Pacific slope of North America, andMataxawas previously known only from Upper Cretaceous strata in the southeastern United States and northeastern Brazil. The buccinidEripachya jalamanew species and the fasciolariidCalkota daileyinew genus and new species are from the lower upper Campanian Jalama Formation in southern California.Calkotais also recognized herein as occurring in upper Maastrichtian strata of North Dakota and South Dakota. The new melongenid genus,Pentzia, established forFulgur hilgardiWhite, 1889, is from Campanian strata throughout California; middle Campanian strata on Sucia Island, Washington; and upper Campanian to lower Maastrichtian strata in northern Baja California, Mexico.

Four new venerid species from the Cretaceous of the North American Pacific Slope are described and four previously described species are reassigned. Of the new species, two are allotted to new genera: Rhaiphiale based upon Rhaiphiale pharota n. sp. and Egrona based upon Egrona fallax n. sp., both Turonian in age and from southern California. The other new species are Loxo quintense n. sp., of late Maastrichtian age from California, and Paraesa cedrina n. sp., late Albian in age from Baja California, Mexico. The previously described species “Meretrix” arata Gabb, 1864, Turonian, and “?Meretrix” fragilis Gabb, 1869, late Maastrichtian, are placed in the new genus Callistalox; “Meretrix” lens (Gabb, 1864), Campanian age, and Flaventia zeta Popenoe, 1937, Turonian, are provisionally assigned to Paraesa Casey, 1952. This is the first identification of Paraesa from the Pacific Slope of North America. No species of Flaventia Jukes-Brown, 1908, is now known in Pacific Slope faunas.

Several biologically significant domes of pachycephalosaurid dinosaurs are described and figured. One unusual specimen from the Oldman Formation (Upper Cretaceous) of Alberta is placed into a new genus and another specimen from the same formation is assigned to a new species of Stegoceras. Domes referable to Stegoceras sp. (Judith River and Hell Creek Formations) are the first conclusive evidence of the presence of this genus in the United States. A large dome from the Oldman Formation of Alberta is referred to Pachycephalosaurus; this specimen is the oldest described to date and is the first record of this genus in Canada.Endocranial casts of Yaverlandia bitholus and Stegoceras validus are described along with a discussion of endocranial trends in pachycephalosaurids. The separation between the cerebrum and cerebellum found in Yaverlandia, and typical of ornithopods in general, is lacking in Stegoceras and Pachycephalosaurus. The loss of this separation may be the result of head butting.The family Pachycephalosauridae possesses sufficient ornithopod characters to justify their retention in that suborder. It does, however, represent an aberrant side branch of ornithopod evolution, which can best be visualized taxonomically by placing this family into a separate infraorder within the Ornithopoda.

Two new genera and three new species of shallow-marine, warm-water gastropods are reported from outcrops of various Cretaceous formations between British Columbia and Baja California. The potamidid Cedrosia pacifica new genus and species is from Turonian strata on Cedros Island, west coast of Baja California, Mexico. It is the earliest potamidid known from the rock record of the Pacific Slope. Alamirifica corona new genus and species, whose suprageneric relationships are uncertain, is from Turonian strata in southern California. The holotype has a round and rimmed aperture most similar to the photine buccinid Neoteron Pilsbry and Lowe, 1932. The holotype also has a pyramidal spire most similar to some fossil cerithioideans traditionally placed in the potamidid Pyrazus Montfort, 1810, but the type species of Pyrazus does not have a pyramidal spire. Future work might reveal that Alamirifica belongs to a new family.Four other Pacific Slope species are tentatively assigned to Alamirifica: the Aptian A.? harrissi (Allison, 1955); the Coniacian A.? ursa new species; the late Coniacian to early Campanian A.? harveyi (Whiteaves, 1903); and the poorly preserved Turonian Alamirifica? sp.As presently known, Cedrosia and Alamirifica were endemic to the study area, but they strongly resemble some Old World Tethyan gastropods. The distribution of A.? harveyi lends support to a relatively northern site of deposition for the Nanaimo Group.

The amphipod genus Orchestia is revised. It now includes 10 species of which three are new: O. forchuensis sp. nov. from north-eastern North America and Iceland., O. perezi sp. nov. from Chile and O. tabladoi sp. nov. from Argentina. Orchestia inaequalipes (K.H. Barnard 1951) is reinstated. The type species of the genus, O. gammarellus is redescribed based on material from Fountainstown, Ireland and a neotype is established to stabilize the species. The species was originally described from a garden in Leiden, far from the sea. Its true identity is unknown and no type material exists. Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas, 1776) is shown to be a sibling species group with members in both hemispheres of the temperate Atlantic as well along the Pacific coast of South America. A hypothesis for the establishment of the current distribution of Orchestia species is presented that extends back to the Cretaceous.

Four species belonging in Tudiclidae and one in Melongenidae have been confused with perissityids. The new genus Rapopsis is proposed for a tudiclid species, R. joseana n. sp. of early Maastrichtian age. Three other tudiclid species may belong in the Tethyan genus Pyropsis, P. fantozzii n. sp. of early to middle Paleocene age, P. striata (Stanton, 1896) of later Paleocene age, and ?P. gabbi (Stanton, 1896) probably of early to middle Paleocene age. The melongenid genus Protobusycon, represented by P. judithae n. sp. of late Paleocene age, has not previously been recognized in eastern Pacific faunas.

Spinosphaera is a Terebellinae genus with three species described from the Pacific Ocean, S. pacifica from Japan, S. oculata from California, and the doubtful S. cowarrie from Western Australia. The genus is presently unknown in the Grand Caribbean region. Spinosphaera is characterized by the absence of branchiae, by the great number of notopodia, and the presence of a special type of notochaetae, called ‘Spinosphaera-chaeta’. These chaetae have three different regions: distal denticulate blade, neck separating the former from a middle swollen spinous region, and a proximal smooth or bilimbate region; two sizes are present. The genus is redefined, with redescription of all species currently known. Three new species are described here, two from the Mexican Caribbean coast, S. hutchingsae and S. carrerai, and one from California, S. harrisae. A taxonomic key to identify all species is given. Hutchingsiella gen. nov. is proposed for S. cowarrie; it differs from Spinosphaera in having notochaeta from segment 5 and neurochaetae from segment 6, and for lacking Spinosphaera chaeta.

AbstractWe describe three new species of fruit flies (Tephritidae: Tephritinae) (Gymnocarena defoeisp. nov. and Gymnocarenanorrbomisp. nov., from eastern North America and Gymnocarena monzonisp. nov. from Guatemala) and redescribe Gymnocarena mississippiensis Norrbom. Gymnocarena monzoni is the first Gymnocarena species to be recorded from Guatemala. This brings the total number of named species in this genus to 19. New larval host plant (Asteraceae) records for Gymnocarena include Verbesina helianthoides Michx. for G. mississippiensis and G. norrbomi, Verbesinaalternifolia (L.) Britton ex Kearney for G. norrbomi, and Viguiera cordata (Hook. and Arn.) D'Arcy for G. monzoni. The latter represents the first record for Gymnocarena in Viguiera Kunth. Gymnocarena larvae were also recorded from Verbesina virginica L. but not identified to species. A revised key to the known species of Gymnocarena and additional information on larval host plants and biology are provided.

In this paper three new species of Elaphoglossum Schott ex J. Sm., are described and illustrated, located on the pacific slope of Cordillera de Talamanca and Cerro Caraigres (Cerro Dragón), Costa Rica. The new species are: E. dragonense A. Rojas, E. flavosquamum A. Rojas and E. pacificum A. Rojas, all belong to the section Elaphoglossum subsection Pachyglossa Christ. The first species resembles E. gloeorrhizum Mickel but is separated by showing a scaly rhizome, phyllopodia with two sections, the basal one resinous as the rhizome and the second non-resinous, bigger stipe scales, and the abaxial blade is scaly. The second entity resembles E. delgadilloanum A. Rojas, but differs by having blonde to orange-yellowish rhizome scales with long lateral processes and the blade scales are mainly smaller, less dense and bicolorous with black central body and brown rays. The latter species is similar to E. cismense Rosenst., but is identified by its more slender rhizome, fronds at less distance between them, shorter phyllopodia, narrowly elliptic blade, bigger abaxial blade scales and a linear-elliptical and narrower fertile blade.
