Element morphology and taxonomic relationships of the Ordovician conodonts Phragmodus primus Branson and Mehl, 1933, the type species of Phragmodus Branson and Mehl, 1933, and Phragmodus undatus Branson and Mehl, 1933

Rediscovery of Branson and Mehl's (1933b) classical outcrop of the Middle Ordovician Joachim Dolomite near Holstein in eastern Missouri, from which they described 32 new species and four new genera of conodonts, makes it possible to obtain the large topotype collections needed to interpret their taxa in terms of modern multielement taxonomy. Of special interest in their Holstein fauna is Phragmodus primus Branson and Mehl, 1933, by original designation the type species of Phragmodus Branson and Mehl, 1933, whose morphology and relationships have been very poorly understood. Study of topotype collections, as well as of Branson and Mehl's syntypes, has failed to reveal any notable morphological differences between the elements of P. primus and those of P. undatus Branson and Mehl, 1933, a very well known and widely distributed species in the Middle and Upper Ordovician Midcontinent Realm faunas. These species are herein considered to be synonymous. Because the original descriptions of P. primus and P. undatus were published simultaneously, neither name has priority over the other. However, P. undatus has figured far more prominently in the taxonomic and biostratigraphic conodont literature than P. primus and therefore we favor use of the former designation for this species. The recognition that P. primus and P. undatus are the same species extends the stratigraphic range of P. undatus downward to considerably below the Deicke K-bentonite, that is, well into the Blackriveran.

Sixteen new species and four new genera of euophryine jumping spiders from the Old World (China, Malaysia and SouthAfrica) are described. The new genera are Chinophrys gen. nov. (type species C. pengi sp. nov.), Foliabitus gen. nov.(type species F. longzhou sp. nov.), Parabathippus gen. nov. (type species Bathippus shelfordi Peckham & Peckham, andnew species P. cuspidatus sp. nov., P. kiabau sp. nov., P. magnus sp. nov.) and Parvattus gen. nov. (type species P. zhui sp.nov.). The other new species belong to the genera Colyttus Thorell, 1891 (C. robustus sp. nov.), Emathis Simon, 1899 (E.gombak sp. nov.), Lagnus L. Koch, 1879 (L. edwardsi sp. nov.), Laufeia Simon, 1889 (L. concava sp. nov. and L. eximiasp. nov.), Thiania C. L. Koch, 1846 (T. latibola sp. nov. and T. tenuis sp. nov.) and Thyenula Simon, 1902 (T. laxa sp. nov.,T. nelshoogte sp. nov. and T. wesolowskae sp. nov.). The following species from Southeast Asia once described as Bathip-pus Thorell, 1892 are transferred to Parabathippus gen. nov.: Bathippus birmanicus Thorell, B. digitalis Zhang, Song &Li, B. macilentus Thorell, B. petrae Prószyński & Deeleman-Reinhold, B. rectus Zhang, Song & Li, B. sedatus Peckham& Peckham and B. shelfordi Peckham & Peckham. Laufeia liujiapingensis Yang & Tang is transferred to Chinophrys gen.nov.. Laufeia scutigeraŻabka is transferred to Foliabitus gen. nov.. Diagnostic illustrations are provided for all of the described new species. Photographs of living spiders are also provided for some new species.

A well-preserved and moderately diverse acritarch assemblage was recovered from the upper Ordovician Maquoketa Shale of northeastern Missouri. Based on graptolite and conodont evidence, the Maquoketa in northeastern Missouri is considered Richmondian (=Ashgill) in age.The acritarch assemblage comprises 28 species, distributed among 17 genera including two new genera,CaelatosphaeraandStictosoma.There are 11 new species,Baltisphaeridium adiastaltum, Caelatosphaera verminosa(type species),Dorsennidium undosum, Elektoriskos aktinotos, Lophosphaeridium acinatum, L. varum, Micrhystridium hirticulum, M. prolixum, Peteinosphaeridium accinctulum, P. septuosum, andStictosoma gemmata(type species); together with two species similar to previously named species and three species left in open nomenclature. The present Maquoketa Shale acritarch palynoflora shows greatest similarity to those of the Sylvan Shale (Ashgill; Richmondian) of Oklahoma and the Maquoketa Shale (Caradoc and Ashgill) of Kansas. Whereas there are some cosmopolitan acritarch species present in the Maquoketa Shale, its palynoflora shows no pronounced similarity with age-equivalent acritarch suites from outside of North America.

Thirty-four new species and five new genera of euophryine jumping spiders from Papua New Guinea are described. Thenew genera are Chalcolemia (type species C. nakanai sp. nov.), Phasmolia (type species P. elegans sp. nov.), Variratina(type species V. minuta sp. nov.), Viribestus (type species V. suyanensis sp. nov.) and Zabkattus (type species Z. brevis sp.nov., plus new species Z. furcatus sp. nov., Z. richardsi sp. nov. and Z. trapeziformis sp. nov.). The other new species belong to the genera Bathippus (B. directus sp. nov., B. gahavisuka sp. nov., B. korei sp. nov., B. madang sp. nov.), Canama(C. extranea sp. nov., C. fimoi sp. nov., C. triramosa sp. nov.), Omoedus (O. brevis sp. nov., O. darleyorum sp. nov., O.meyeri sp. nov., O. omundseni sp. nov., O. papuanus sp. nov., O. swiftorum sp. nov., O. tortuosus sp. nov.), Paraharmochi-rus (P. tualapaensis sp. nov.), Sobasina (S. wanlessi sp. nov.), Thorelliola (T. aliena sp. nov., T. crebra sp. nov., T. joannaesp. nov., T. squamosa sp. nov., T. tamasi sp. nov., T. tualapa sp. nov., T. zabkai sp. nov.) and Xenocytaea (X. agnarssonisp. nov., X. albomaculata sp. nov., X. proszynskii sp. nov.). The genera Pystira and Zenodorus are both considered as juniorsynonyms of Omoedus because of their similar genital structure. Species of these two genera are therefore transferred toOmoedus. Diagnostic illustrations are provided for all new species, and photographs of living spiders are also provided when available.

ABSTRACTForty-one species assigned to thirty-seven named genera of trilobites are described from the Tangtou Formation at Tangshan and Lunshan, in Jiangsu Province, SE China. Nankinolithus nankinensis Lu, the Zone fossil of the upper part of the Formation, is abundant. Many Tangtou Formation species occur also in the Huangnehkan, Linhsiang and Chiencaokou formations, and all are considered to be of early Ashgill age. The trilobites are closely related to those of the Staurocephalus clavifrons Zone (Rawtheyan) of Poland, demonstrating the long duration and wide extent of deeper water faunas. There are also close links with the Ashgill faunas of Central Asia.One new species, Amphitryon cheni, is established. The following morphological features are described: a small remopleuridine hypostome is unlike any other in construction; Nileus transversus retains genal spines to full grown size in some specimens, but loses them in others; the hypostome lacks the posteromedian cusp of other species. The hypostome of Paraphillipsinella is strongly styginid in conformation, and unlike that of Phillipsinella. Telephina convexa is the only species known with three spines on the librigena. The arrangement of pits in Nankinolithus nankinensis, the type species, is described, including illustrations of the irregularities which occur in every fringe. A small bulb at the tip of the hypostome of Ovalocephalus (= Hammatocnemis) bears two backwardly pointing spinules, one above the other, on the vertical posterior margin. Three types of protaspides, and numerous meraspid parts are described.

A new species of the hitherto monotypic spider genus Proislandiana Tanasevitch, 1985 is described from the high altitude belt of Ararat Mountain (Turkey) and Aragats Mountain (Armenia). The genus Proislandiana is reviewed, its taxonomic relationships to the other genera are discussed. The diagnoses of the genus and its type species are revised. The distribution and the zoogeography of the two known Proislandiana species are summarized and discussed.

Abstract. The taxonomic identity of the dinoflagellate cyst genus Polygonifera Habib, 1972 is confirmed, through the recognition of additional morphological characters during the study of specimens from Early-Middle Cretaceous sediments of India. A revised definition of this genus is presented. Leberidocysta Stover & Evitt, 1978 is considered a subjective junior synonym of Polygonifera and its type species Leberidocysta (ex: Hexagonifera) chlamydata (Cookson & Eisenack) is transferred to Polygonifera. The other species placed in Leberidocysta are provisionally reattributed to other genera, becoming Craspedodinium (ex: Hexagonifera) defloccata (Davey), Craspedodinium (ex: Palaeostomocystis) pergamentacea (Burger), Hexagonifera laticaudata Vozzhennikova and Hexagonifera scabrata Jain & Taugourdeau-Lantz. A new species, Polygonifera eisenackii, is described. Morphological differences between the camocavate genera Polygonifera and Dingodinium are clarified.

Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

The new Ordovician palaeotaxodont family Nucularcidae and the new genus Nucularca are described. Included in Nucularca are four previously described species that have taxodont dentition: N. cingulata (Ulrich) (the type species), N. pectunculoides (Hall), N. lorrainensis (Foerste), and N. gorensis (Foerste). All four species are of Late Ordovician (Cincinnatian Katian) age and occur in eastern Canada and the northeastern USA. Ctenodonta borealis Foerste is regarded as a subjective synonym of Nucularca lorrainensis. No new species names are proposed. The Nucularcidae includes the genera Nucularca and Sthenodonta Pojeta and Gilbert-Tomlinson (1977). Sthenodonta occurs in central Australia in rocks of Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) age. The 12 family group names previously proposed for Ordovician palaeotaxodonts having taxodont dentition are reviewed and evaluated in the Appendix.

1. Those species of Proteocephalid Cestodes in which the testes are situated in the cortex may be described as of the Monticellia type. Of this type there are three conditions : (a) the Monticellia condition in which the testes, uterus, ovary, and vitellaria are all situated in the cortex; (b) the Rudolphiella condition in which the testes and vitellaria alone are in the cortex, the other organs being entirely or almost entirely in the medulla ; and (c) the Marsypocephalus condition in which the testes alone are in the cortex, all other organs being medullary. Fuhrmann's genus Goezeella is synonymous with Monticellia if we ignore the characters of the scolex as features of generic value. 2. The anatomy of two species of Marsypocephalus is described: Marsypocephalus rectangulus Wedl, 1862, and Marsypocephalus heterobranchus, n.sp., from Nile Siluroid fishes. 3. It is concluded that the cortical situation of the testes and other organs is a taxonomic feature of generic value only (as in Pseudophyllidea in the case of the vitellaria) and La Rue's new family of the Monticellidae, created to include Monticellia-like forms, is not accepted. Monticellia, Rudolphiella, and Marsypocephalus are thus regarded as new genera in the Proteocephalidae. 4. The facts that the ‘Corallobothrium’ type of scolex is found in all of the three genera Monticellia (as amended by me and including ‘Goezeella’ siluri, Fuhrmann), Rudolphiella, and Proteocephalus (as amended by me and including ‘Corallobothrium’ solidum, Fritsch), and that in the Caryophyllaeidae, Bothriocephalidae, and Cyclophyllidea (cf. e.g. Taenia solium and Taenia saginata) minor scolex characters are evidently only features of specific value, compel us to delete such genera as Corallobothrium, Choanoscolex, Acanthotaenia, and my own recent genus Gangesia and to regard them as synonyms of Proteocephalus (La Rue's genus ‘Ophiotaenia’, syn. ‘Crepidobothrium’, not being accepted). Fuhrmann's Goezeella siluri becomes Monticellia siluri, and Fritach's Corallobothrium solidum becomes Proteocephalus solidus. The genera of the Proteocephalidae are thus four in number: Proteocephalus , Monticellia, Rudolphiella , and Marsypocep, halus, and these are formally or informally redefined. The two species of Marsypocephalus are diagnosed. 5. The ‘Taenia malopteruri’ of Fritsch, 1886, is not of the Monticellia type, as suggested by La Rue. Its structure is of the usual Proteocephalid type, save that the scolex possesses a rostellum and a broad band of hooklets and is covered with spinelets. It is renamed Proteocephalus malopteruri. 6. A new species of Clestobothrium--Clestobothrium clarias, from Clarias anguillaris Günth-is described. It is of interest, not only as being the third (second ?) species known of the genus, but because it affords one more illustration of the fact that the characters of the scolex cannot be used for diagnoses of genera. For this reason also, Lönnberg's genus Ptychobothrium (1889) becomes synonymous with Diesing's genus Polyonchobothrium (1884).

The paramunnid genera Austrosignum Hodgson, 1910 (type species A. glaciale Hodgson, 1910) and Munnogonium George & Strömberg, 1968 (type species M. waldronense George & Strömberg, 1968) are re-diagnosed. Twenty seven species are reviewed. Austrosignum is restricted to two described species, Munnogonium to five described species. The remaining 20 species are placed in the following eight new genera: Boreosignum (type species Austrosignum maltinii Schiecke & Fresi, 1972), Cryosignum (type species Paramunna lunata Hale, 1937), Meridiosignum (type species M. macquariensis sp. nov.), Tethygonium (type species T. quadricuspis sp. nov.), Quetzogonium (type species Austrosignum dentatum Winkler, 1994), Advenogonium (type species Austrosignum fuegiae Doti & Roccatagliata, 2005), Zizzygonium (type species Paramunna magellanensis Winkler, 1994), Kussakinella (type species Austrosignum spinosum Kussakin, 1982).
