Distichopora robusta sp. nov., the first shallow-water stylasterid (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Stylasteridae) from the tropical eastern Pacific

Distichopora robusta, the first shallow-water stylasterid coral from the tropical eastern Pacific, is described from the west coast of Panama. The new species is distinguished from all species of Distichopora described thus far by having robust branches and poorly defined pore rows.

Marine isopods, despite being a very diverse group, have been little studied in the Mexican South Pacific. After a revision of 171 specimens collected from Guerrero and Oaxaca, six new species, belonging to five genera, were discovered: Amakusanthura guerrerensis sp. nov., Cortezura caeca sp. nov., Mesanthura antenniformis sp. nov., M. estacahuitensis sp. nov., Skuphonura oaxaquensis sp. nov., and Tinggianthura mexicana sp. nov. In this work, the genera Amakusanthura Nunomura, 1977 and Tinggianthura Chew, Abdul-Rahim & Haji Ross, 2014, are recorded for the first time in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. Also, the distribution range of the genus Skuphonura Barnard, 1925 is increased from the west coast of South America to the southern Mexican Pacific, this being the first record of this genus in the Mexican Pacific. This study doubles the number of species recorded of Anthuridae from the Mexican Pacific, of six to 12 species.

A common west-coast psolid sea cucumber, formerly identified as Psolidium bullatum Ohshima, 1915, is described as a new species. Psolidium bidiscum n.sp. has two types of ventral ossicles, one type of dorsal cup, and 10 scales between the mouth and anus. Psolidium bullatum Ohshima, 1915 has one type of ventral ossicle, no dorsal cups, and 19 scales between the mouth and anus. Psolidium bidiscum is known from southeastern Alaska south to Monterey, California, between 0 and 200 m in depth. Psolidium bidiscum is compared with six other species of Psolidium from the eastern Pacific.

<p></p><p>The recent foraminiferal fauna and associated microbiota of Clipperton Island (10.2833°N, 109.2167°W) were investigated at 20 sites collected in the intertidal zone around the perimeter of the island and from the edge of the inner brackish-water lagoon. Due to the island’s geographic location in a low productivity zone, a lack of variable habitats on and surrounding the island, and heavy surf that pounds the exposed land, a depauperate fauna was recovered although mixed biogeographic affinities are represented. The shallow-water foraminiferal assemblage has no endemics but primarily tropical Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific (Panamic) affinities, as well as one species of Caribbean affinity. The most abundant taxa are <i>Sorites</i> spp. and <i>Quinqueloculina</i> spp. Noticeably absent are any species of <i>Amphistegina, </i>despite the fact that they are considered ubiquitous in the tropical Pacific. The molluscan fauna has Clipperton Island endemics, a tropical Pacific/Inter-Island endemic, and tropical eastern Pacific oceanic islands/Panamic Molluscan affinities. The ostracods included endemics found restricted to Clipperton Island lagoon, as well as Indo-Pacific and Panamic Province species. The foraminifera, mollusks, and ostracods are thought to disperse to Clipperton Island by way of the North Equatorial Countercurrent and North Equatorial Current, suggesting that the island is indeed a stepping stone for migration both east and west across the Eastern Pacific Barrier.</p><br><p></p>

Lampetra macrostoma n.sp., a freshwater parasitic lamprey, is distinguished from related species L. tridentata, L. lethophaga, L. folletti, L. minima, and L. similis by its parasitic habit and very large disc. Other characters distinguishing the species from L. tridentata are its longer prebranchial length, large eye, weakly pigmented velar tentacles, and its ability to remain in freshwater. The recently metamorphosed form readily survives in freshwater and probably is non-anadromous even though it can survive in salt water. The new species has been discovered in two lakes on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, where it attacks large numbers of resident salmonids. Because of its ability to survive and feed in freshwater, it poses a definite threat to freshwater fishes.Key words: lamprey, new species, non-anadromous lamprey, salmonid parasitism
