A checklist of the fishes of Ascension Island is presented. The speciesRhincodon typus,Alopias superciliosus,Isurus oxyrinchus,Carcharhinus obscurus,Galeocerdo cuvier,Sphyrna lewini,Hexanchus griseus,Manta birostris,Gymnothorax vicinus,Hippocampussp.,Epinephelus itajara,Cookeolus japonicus,Apogon pseudomaculatus,Phaeoptyx pigmentaria,Remora albescens,Caranx bartholomaei,Carangoides ruber,Decapterus tabl,Seriola dumerili,Thalassoma sanctaehelenae,Cryptotomussp.,Ruvettus pretiosus,Acanthocybium solandri,Auxis rochei,Auxis thazard,Euthynnus alletteratus,Katsuwonus pelamis,Thunnus alalunga,Thunnus obesus,Xiphias gladius,Istiophorus platypterus,Kajikia albida,Makaira nigricans,Tetrapturus pfluegeri,Hyperoglyphe perciformis,Schedophilussp.,Cantherhines macrocerus,Sphoeroides pachygasterandDiodon eydouxiiare recorded for the first time from Ascension Island. We have recognized two previous records as identification errors and indicate 11 other records as doubtful. Including the 40 new records, we now list 173 fish species from Ascension Island, of which 133 might be considered ‘coastal fish species’. Eleven of these (8.3%) appear to be endemic to the island and a further 16 species (12%) appear to be shared endemics with St Helena Island.

A check-list of the fishes of St Helena Island is presented. The following species are recorded for the first time from St. Helena Island: Rhincodon typus, Mobula tarapacana, Muraena melanotis, Caranx latus, Seriola rivoliana, Balistes capriscus, Lutjanus jocu, Centropyge aurantonotus, Acanthurus coeruleus, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum, Tetrapturus pfluegeri, Coelorinchus geronimo, Pentaceros richardsoni, Gephyroberyx darwinii, Brotula cf multibarbata, Poromitra crassiceps, Echiostoma barbatum, Malacosteus niger, Pachystomias microdon. Including these nineteen new records there are 189 fish species currently known from St Helena. Three of them appear to be undescribed. Eight species and two subspecies are currently considered endemic to St. Helena Island.

Abstract We report on a recent collection of caridean shrimps from St. Helena in the south-central Atlantic Ocean, raising the total number of species known from the island to 24. Six species are newly recorded for the area, with no endemic species present. Additional three species are recorded from Ascension Island. A close biogeographical connection between the caridean faunas of St. Helena and Ascension Island is evident.

A New Species

A new species of the caridean shrimp genus Lysmata Risso, 1816 is described from St. Helena and Ascension Island in the south-central Atlantic. Lysmata napoleoni sp. nov. is part of the so-called “long-branch group” of the genus and shows a strong morphological similarity with the eastern Atlantic L. seticaudata Risso, 1816, from which it can be distinguished by details of the accessory branch of the antennular flagellum. The new species also displays a unique and bright colour pattern and therefore can be easily recognised in the field. Furthermore, it is typically found in proximity of sea anemones, Telmatactis cricoides (Duchassaing), and appears to be an occasional fish cleaner.

The decapod Crustacea from Ascension Island are reported upon on the basis of major expeditions undertaken during 2008 and 2012, including several minor additional collections made in other years. Two species, Gnathophyllum americanumandCorallianassa longiventrisare new records for the island bringing the total known marine decapod fauna to 75 species, of which 11 are currently endemic to Ascension Island.

The presence of five shallow-water scleractinian species at Ascension Island is confirmed, i.e. Favia gravida, Madracis sp., Siderastrea radians, Polycyathus atlanticus and Rhizosmilia gerdae. The three former are zooxanthellate, the two latter azooxanthellate. A sixth species, Cladocora debilis (azooxanthellate), dredged from moderately deep water is also expected to occur in shallow water. Madracis sp. and P. atlanticus are new records for the island. A previous record of Astrangia solitaria at Ascension is now referred to as P. atlanticus. Favia gravida, S. radians and C. debilis are amphi-Atlantic. Rhizosmilia gerdae is currently known only from Ascension Island and the Western Atlantic. None of the species are endemic to Ascension Island. No member of the family Dendrophylliidae has as yet been found at Ascension, whereas that family is represented at its nearest neighbour, St Helena Island.

Herein we present new records of three freshwater fish species (Hasemania crenuchoides, Hyphessobrycon balbus and Oligosarcus planaltinae) considered restricted to Central Brazil and previously known only for the upper Rio São Bartolomeu sub-basin. Our data expand their range to other sub-basins in the Distrito Federal, including Sobradinho, Bananal, Santa Maria-Torto, Gama and Ribeirão Santana sub-basins.

The present report provides the first account of the shallow water hydroids of St. Helena, which comprises 17 species, and adds nine new records to the hydrozoan fauna of the Tristan da Cunha group of islands, raising their number to 34. A total of 34 species, belonging to five families of Anthoathecata and eight families of Thecata, are discussed herein. Although distributional data are given for each species, brief diagnoses are provided for the lesser known or unidentifiable species, and the common taxa are occasionally accompanied by succinct remarks. Illustrations are provided for nearly all species in order to justify their identification and to facilitate identification by others.Fiordlandia protectaandFilellum bouvetensis,both from Gough Island, represent the second world records and extend their known area of distribution.

A New Species

Steriphodon Abeille de Perrin, 1895, a small genus of Eurygeniinae (Anthicidae) is reviewed. Critical morphology of the genus is reassessed and discussed. An annotated checklist, key to species and new records are provided. Steriphodon ottomerkli sp. nov. from the Balochistan Province, Pakistan is described and illustrated.
