Age and growth estimates of the Kwangtung skate Dipturus kwangtungensis in the waters of northern Taiwan

The age and growth of Kwangtung skate, Dipturus kwangtungensis, in the waters off northern Taiwan were estimated from 422 specimens collected between July 2006 and July 2008 at the Tashi fishing market in north-eastern Taiwan. The sexes-combined relationship between total length (TL) and centrum diameter (D) was estimated as follows: TL = 14.11D0.888 (N = 411, r2 = 0.94, P < 0.001). Growth band pairs (comprised of translucent and opaque bands) in vertebrae were determined to form once annually, based on the centrum edge analysis. Up to 14 band pairs were found for both sexes. The von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF), two-parameter VBGF, the Robertson function, and the Gompertz function were used to fit the observed length-at-age data. The Akaike information criterion corrected indicated that the Gompertz function best fit the observed length at age data. Sex-specific growth functions were not significantly different; the sexes-combined growth parameters were estimated as follows: asymptotic length (L∞) = 96.7 cm TL, growth coefficient (kG) = 0.144 year−1 and constant (t0) = 5.45 year (N = 364, P < 0.01).

This study estimated age and growth of the largest extant fish, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) by counting vertebral band pairs from 92 specimens comprising 43 males (2.68–9.88 m total length [TL]), 30 females (1.60–7.02 m TL), and 19 unsexed individuals (2.83–6.67 m TL) taken by Taiwanese commercial fisheries during 2001–06. Growth band pairs up to 25 and 42 were counted for a 6.38-m TL female and a 9.88-m TL male, respectively. Using marginal increment ratio and centrum edge analysis, band pairs were postulated to be formed twice a year. The two-parameter von Bertalanffy growth function provided the best fit without significant differences between sexes. Growth parameters were calculated for both sexes as L∞ = 16.80 m TL, k = 0.037 year–1; annual band pair formation would modify these parameters to L∞ = 15.34 m TL, k = 0.021 year–1. Using data reported in another study for 50% size at maturity for males (8.1 m TL), and the largest immature and smallest mature females (8.7 and 9.6 m TL, respectively) in the Indo-Pacific, these TLs converted to ages at maturity of 17 years for males and 19–22 years for females. The longevity was calculated to be 80.4 years.

The Rio skate Rioraja agassizii is a threatened endemic skate species frequently caught as bycatch in the western South Atlantic. However, there is no biological information about its age and growth parameters, which would be necessary to provide science-based information for the development of management strategies for this species. The aim of the present study was to provide information about the age and growth parameters of R. agassizii. In all, 138 vertebrae from individuals ranging in size from 9.0 to 53.2-cm total length (TL) were analysed. The edge analysis indicated a trend for annual band deposition in the vertebrae. Maximum ages estimated for males and females were 6 and 10 years respectively. Akaike’s information criterion indicated that the modified two-parameter form of the von Bertalanffy growth function (using length at birth L0=9.0cm TL) provided the best fit, with derived parameters of theoretical maximum length L∞=49.6cm TL and growth coefficient k=0.27 for males and L∞=59.0cm TL and k=0.22 for females. Our results are important to understanding the resilience of this skate species to harvest, which can contribute to the development of fisheries management strategies and conservation programs.

In this study, 292 blue sharks Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) (from 151 to 305 cm total length, TL) were collected off western Africa in the eastern central Atlantic Ocean between 1980 and 1982. Vertebral sections of females specimens ranged from 175 to 300 cm and males specimens ranged from 166 to 312 cm TL were processed and analyzed for age and growth parameters. Growth band pairs (translucent and opaque bands) were counted on the images photographed from the stained whole vertebrae using digital microscope called Digi Scope II. The band pairs after the birthmark were counted from 3 to 12 for males and from 4 to 13 for females. Growth parameters were derived using the Von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) based on FISAT and solver solution Microsoft excel and Ford Wall-Ford. VBGF was that which best fit the data. Parameters derived from the combination of observed and back-calculated lengths, K = 0.1, L_∞ = 386.4 cm and t_0 = −1.35 year for males and K = 0.12 year -1, L_∞= 355 cm and t_0 = –1.02 year for females were considered to best describe growth. The longevity was estimated to be at least 23.7 and 28.3 years for females and males respectively. The natural mortality rate was estimated to be 0.15 year - 1 and 0.18 year -1 for males and females respectively.

The age and growth of the blue shark Prionace glauca in the central South Pacific is described based on 267 specimens that were collected by scientific observers on board Taiwanese large-scale tuna longline fleets between May 2009 and May 2011. Growth band pairs (identified as translucent and opaque bands) were counted on images photographed from X-ray films of the vertebrae from the caudal peduncle region. The marginal increment ratio and centrum edge analysis indicated that a growth band pair was formed on the vertebral centrum once per year. The band pairs after the birthmark were counted from 2 to 11 for females and from 2 to 15 for males. The bias corrected Akaike information criterion indicated that the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) best fitted the observed total length (TL)-at-age data. The parameters of sex-specific VBGF were estimated as follows: for females, theoretical maximum length (L∞) mean±s.d.=330.4±46.6cm TL, growth coefficient k=0.164±0.057year–1 and theoretical age at length 0 (t0)=–1.29±0.78 years; for males, L∞=376.6±32.6cm TL, k=0.128±0.022year–1 and t0=–1.48±0.54 years. The longevities were estimated to be at least 16.8 and 21.6 years for females and males respectively.

AbstractThe catch of Japanese butterfish, Psenopsis anomala in Taiwan is greater than those of any other nation; however, the biology, particularly the age and growth, of this economically important fish species is little known. This study describes the age and growth of P. anomala based on 734 specimens (340 females, 363 males, 31 unsexed) caught by trawl fishery in the north-eastern waters off Taiwan from March 2007 to July 2008. The age of specimens was estimated by counting the growth annuli in sagittal otoliths. The periodicity of annulus deposition on otolith was estimated to be one year with opaque zone deposited between July and August based on marginal increment analysis. The maximum age for both sexes was estimated to be ~4. The female portion of the population was dominated by the 3+ age class, while the male portion was dominated by the 2∞ age class. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function with standard error estimated based on the observed length at age using a non-linear method are as follows: L∞ = 25.47 ± 0.65 cm, k = 0.30 ± 0.03 year−1, and t0 = −1.84 ± 0.16 year for females (n = 350), and L∞ = 22.39 ± 0.45 cm, k = 0.46 ± 0.04 year−1, and t0 = −1.38 ± 0.13 year for males (n = 378). The growth performances of P. anomala reported from different geographic regions were compared, and the potential influences of sample size distribution on the estimated growth parameters were further discussed.

Age and growth of Agassiz's parrotfish Sparisoma frondosum captured off Brazil (Pernambuco) were estimated using sagittal otoliths from 251 specimens. Sex of each specimen was determined and showed that 130 specimens were females (13.1 to 36.8 cm TL) and 121 were males (17.5 to 36.6 cm TL). The otolith marginal increment analysis indicated a single translucent ring formed every year. Parameters of growth curves were derived for the von Bertalanffy (VBGF) and Gompertz models. Based on the Akaike information criterion (AIC), both models were suitable for describing the growth of this species. VBGF parameters were estimated for males L∞ = 39.74 cm TL, K = 0.22, t0 = −1.63 years, females L∞ = 32.38 cm TL, K = 0.44; t0 = −0.23 years; and for the sexes combined L∞ = 33.66 cm TL, K = 0.41, t0 = −0.27 years. The study showed that 55% of individuals were 3 and 4 years of age, with maximal age of 9 years. Mature females (>17.6 cm TL) accounted for 45% of the sample. The age at first maturity for females was 1.6 years. For males the size at first maturity was not determined as immature individuals were not present in the overall sample. Also, primary males (PM) and specimens with gonads undergoing sexual transition were not found. The age structure and growth parameters for S. frondosum are an important contribution to the assessment of the state of exploitation of this species.

Age and growth of the king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) were estimated for northeastern Brazil. A total of 405 sagittal otoliths from 140 males (24.4-112 cm), 73 females (28-114.8 cm) and 193 specimens of unknown sex (11.5-121 cm) were examined. Marginal increment analysis indicated an annual pattern for growth band deposition. The age classes ranged from 1 to 15 years. Length ranged from 11.5 to 121 cm. The Schnute model indicated that the von Bertalanffy growth model demonstrated the best adjustment, with p=1/b, and was therefore used for estimating growth. Back-calculated curves had smaller variances, giving the following estimated growth parameters for males: L∞= 116.8 cm, K = 0.190, t0 = 0.377; and females: L∞= 132.7 cm, K = 0.159 and t0 = 0.387. In order to compare the curves for males and females, the overlapping of 95% confidence intervals was performed for the parameters generated from the von Bertalanffy non-linear least square method. Specimens between 3 and 8 years of age represented 82.2% (n=5,783) of the catch composition, characterizing the species as a catchable stock in the region.

Whole otoliths were used to age Scomberomorus commerson in tropical Australian waters. Age estimates were validated by marginal-increment analysis of the first three otolith annuli. Confirmation of age estimates was provided by otolith daily growth increments and tag returns of known age. Differential growth in length, weight and longevity was evident between the sexes. The oldest male was 10 years old (127 cm FL, 19.0 kg). The oldest female was 14 years old (155 cm FL, 35 kg). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters L∞ and K were 127.5 cm and 0.25 for males and 155.0 cm and 0.17 for females.

Salema, Sarpa salpa is a commercial exploited species in the Atlantic Ocean with little available information for the essential population parameters, such as age, growth and reproduction. The present study aims to describe these parameters for S. salpa obtained off the coast of Portugal. Ages were estimated from the whole otolith readings; the minimum and the maximum ages observed were 0 and 14 years, respectively, corresponding to 5.2 and 41.4 cm of total length (TL). Whole otolith readings and back-calculation approaches were used to estimate the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function and the Akaike's information criterion value suggested that the second approach was the best one to describe the growth of salema: L∞ = 45.07 cm, k = 0.14 year−1 and t0 = −1.43 year. The species is a protandric hermaphrodite and the sex change process occurred between 28.6 and 40.9 cm TL. A short spawning season was identified, extending from September to November. The estimated length at first maturity for males was 24.5 cm TL, corresponding to an age of 2 years at first maturity. This species exhibited a determinate fecundity type and the relative annual fecundity varied between 462 and 2662 oocytes per gram of gutted weight.

This paper presents a novel approach for fitting length data to the Schnute growth model. Cohorts were fitted manually to a time series of length distributions from two stocks (Clarence and Hunter Rivers) of Metapenaeus macleayi and considered analogous to individuals from tag–recapture data, in order to estimate growth parameters. Data for Clarence males best fitted the three-parameter Schnute Model (L∞ = 21.3 mm CL, κ = 0.025 day–1 and γ = –1.35), whereas those for Hunter males were best fitted to a two-parameter version of the model (L∞ = 33.5 mm CL, κ = 0.009 day–1 and γ = 0 fixed). The equivalent to the von Bertalanffy growth function was the best fit to female data from both stocks (L∞ = 36.6 and 40.2 mm CL, κ = 0.004 and 0.005 day–1 and γ = 1 fixed for Clarence and Hunter respectively). Females grew larger than males and took longer to achieve their maximum size. No significant differences in female growth were found between stocks; however, males from the Hunter grew to a longer mean maximum length but at a slower rate than those from the Clarence. This study shows how the Schnute Model can be fitted to length based data and thus include the flexibility of comparing fits between asymptotic and non-asymptotic growth functions.
