Abstract We use the Keck Cosmic Web Imager integral field unit spectrograph to (1) measure the global stellar population parameters for the ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) Dragonfly 44 (DF44) to much higher precision than previously possible for any UDG and (2) for the first time measure spatially resolved stellar population parameters of a UDG. We find that DF44 falls below the mass–metallicity relation established by canonical dwarf galaxies both in and beyond the Local Group. We measure a flat radial age gradient ( m logage = + 0.01 − 0.08 + 0.08 log Gyr kpc−1) and a flat to positive metallicity gradient ( m [ Fe / H ] = + 0.09 − 0.12 + 0.11 dex kpc−1), which are inconsistent with the gradients measured in similarly pressure-supported dwarf galaxies. We also measure a negative [Mg/Fe] gradient ( m [ Mg / Fe ] = − 0.20 − 0.18 + 0.18 ) dex kpc−1 such that the central 1.5 kpc of DF44 has stellar population parameters comparable to metal-poor globular clusters. Overall, DF44 does not have internal properties similar to other dwarf galaxies and is inconsistent with it having been puffed up through a prolonged, bursty star formation history, as suggested by some simulations. Rather, the evidence indicates that DF44 experienced an intense epoch of “inside-out” star formation and then quenched early and catastrophically, such that star formation was cut off more quickly than in canonical dwarf galaxies.

This study aimed to evaluate population parameters, genetic diversity and identify the ancestors with the highest genetic contribution of an open population of Silla Argentino horses in Colombia using pedigree data. 508 horses born between 1998 and 2018 were evaluated, called reference population (RP). The ancestors of the RP were added, defining the total population (TP) whit 1,861 horses born since 1905. Population parameters were estimated, including inbreeding coefficient (F), effective population size (Ne), effective number of founders (fe), ancestors (fa), and founder genomes (fg) and generation interval (GIN). The GIN was 10.1 (TP) and 7.7 (RP) years. The estimate of F for the RP was 0.3%, indicating control in mattings. The Ne was 317 (RP) and 179 (TP). The probability of genes origin indicated values for fe, fa and fg of 386, 187 and 351 (TP), and 161, 64 and 56 (RP), respectively, evidencing a reduction of genetic variability in the RP. Half of the genetic variation in the equine population studied was explained by 40 ancestors. The results show loss of genetic diversity in the RP and the genetic contribution of the ancestors suggests the need to increase the number of stallions for breeding and guide mating to increase genetic diversity in the new generations of Silla Argentino horses of the Colombian National Police

Individual traits and population parameters can be used as proxies of processes taking place within a range of scales, thus improving the way we can evaluate species response to environmental variability. In intertidal rocky shores, patterns at the within-site scale, i.e., between centimeters to hundreds of meters, are important for understanding the population response into these highly variable environments. Here, we studied a rocky-shore mussel population at the within-site spatial scale (1) to test how intertidal height and orientation of the shore affect individual traits and population parameters, (2) to infer the link between individual and population level features, and (3) to explore the upscaling mechanisms driving population structure and processes. We analyzed the patterns of six population parameters: density, biomass, crowding, median individual size, recruitment and mortality rate, and four individual traits: growth rate, spawning phenology, size and condition index. Crowding was defined as the degree of overlapping of individuals within a given area, for which we created a “crowding index”. Mussels were studied along the intertidal height gradient in two rocky shores with contrasted orientation at one site over a full year. Our results showed a significant effect of intertidal height and shore orientation on most of individual traits and population parameters studied. In contrast, biomass contained in a full covered surface did not vary in space nor in time. This pattern likely results from relatively constant crowding and a trade-off between median individuals’ size and density. We hypothesize that growth, mortality and recruitment rates may all play roles in the stability of the crowding structure of mussel aggregations. Variation in spawning phenology between the two shores in the study site was also observed, suggesting different temporal dynamics of microclimate conditions. Interestingly, despite the different population size distribution between the two shores, our estimates indicate similar potential reproductive output. We hypothesize that the structure of the patches would tend to maintain or carry a maximum of biomass due to trade-offs between density and size while maintaining and maximizing the reproductive output. The patterns of spatial variability of individual traits and population parameters in our study site suggest that heterogeneous within-site conditions influence variation in individual performance and population processes. These results provide insights about the relationship between individual traits and how these relationships make patterns at the population level emerge. They provide baseline information necessary to improve models of metapopulation with spatially explicit processes.

This study evaluates the genetic diversity of different meagre broodstocks sampled in Greece. A multiplex of twelve microsatellite markers was used to genotype 946 fish from eleven stocks and batches used for broodstock selection, and the genetic data was used to calculate genetic population parameters as well as to investigate the genetic differentiation between stocks. The results from a relatedness analysis were used as the guiding lines for a fine-tuned and overall evaluation of the genetic distance between stocks, and the choice of candidate breeders from some of them. The approach implemented in this study uses well-established population genetics methods to evaluate the selection of breeder candidates in aquaculture commercial conditions utilizing a descriptive genetic data set based on microsatellite analyses, and to outline an efficient methodology for establishing the basis of new breeding schemes.

Abstract Labuan Bajo has a fertile aquatic ecosystem, one of them is the coral reef ecosystem. This condition happened because of the supply of nutrients that are carried through Indonesia Through Flow and the local upwelling phenomena. Various species of reef fish of various sizes have been caught in Labuan Bajo waters. In general, the type of reef fish that dominates is grouper fish catch by using handline fishing gear. Furthermore, there is damage that occurs in the coastal ecosystem causes changes in ecological functions and disrupted ecosystem benefits. In addition, pressure from overuse did not provide opportunities for resources to carry out recovery makes the condition of resource stocks threatened. This study aims to determine the parameter aspects of the population of several types of grouper fish in Labuan Bajo waters. The types of grouper studied included Plectropomus leopardus, P. maculatus, P. oligacanthus, and Variola albimarginata. Data collection was carried out by enumerators from April to August 2019 which included the daily data on the length and weight distribution of groupers. Length-frequency distribution data is analyzed by estimating fish population parameters using the Electronic Length Frequency Analysis (ELEFAN I) program which is packaged in the FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tool II (FiSAT II) software. The results of the analysis showed the equation of growth parameters for Von Bartalanffy for P. leopardus is Lt = 89.06(1-e−0.24(t+0.52)); P. maculatus is Lt = 76(1-e−0.54(t+0.23)); P. oligacanthus is Lt = 72.32(1-e−0.66(t+0.19)); and V. albimarginata is Lt = 45(1-e−0.51(t+0.29)). The length at first birth of each species is Lt=0 P. leopardus = 10.45 cm, Lt=0 P. maculatus = 8.88 cm, Lt=0 P. oligacanthus = 8.52 cm, and Lt=0 V. albimarginata = 6.19 cm. Meanwhile, the exploitation rate (E) of P. leopardus, P. maculatus, P. oligacanthus, and V. albimarginata were 0.81; 0.53; 0.45; and 0.70.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is an invasive migratory pest that prefers to feed on crops of the Gramineae family such as maize and wheat. It has been recorded in different locations in China since its invasion in 2019. To assess its effect on different wheat tissues and to provide a risk evaluation for wheat fields, FAW larvae were reared on the wheat seedling (WS), spike (SPK), peduncle (PDC), flag leaf blade (F-b), and blade of the first leaf under flag (F-1b). The population parameters were recorded, and the data were analyzed using the age-stage, two-sex life table method. The results showed that the FAW achieved successful development on all the substrates, although those fed on F-1b grew the slowest, had the smallest pupal weight, and deposited the fewest eggs. The larval survival rates of those fed on WS, SPK, and PDC were more than 80%, while for F-b and F-1b they were 56.58% and 32.03%, respectively. Feeding on leaf blades also resulted in lower fertility, reproductive capacity, life expectancy, net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase, and finite rate of increase. These results indicated that feeding on WS, SPK, and PDC were more beneficial for development compared to F-b and F-1b alone. However, leaf blades alone can still support the full FAW lifecycle and thus could play an important role in nutrition, especially when quantities of the preferred host tissues are not sufficient. These results provide guidance for assessing the FAW risk in China.
