We have several definitions of the positivity of a vector bundle, differentiate definitions, an algebro-geometric definition, a topological definition etc. In § 1 we review the definitions and the relations between them. For a line bundle all the definitions are equivalent and every one agrees that they are reasonable. For a vector bundle, however, the definitions are not necessarily equivalent. One of the main results of this paper is the equivalence of the definitions over a complete non-singular curve. The proof is given in §2. We proved this over an elliptic curve in Umemura [18]. In this case the proof was based on Atiyah’s classification. To prove the equivalence over a curve of genus ≥ 2, the fundamental lemma is; A stable bundle of positive degree is positive in the sense of Nakano. The tool used to prove this lemma is the theory of stable bundles due to Narasimhan and Seshadri [11] —they establish a correspondence between stable bundles and certain types of irreducible unitary representations of a Fuchsian group.

We study a certain moduli space of irreducible Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a unitary vector bundle over a punctured Riemann surface. The connections used have non-trivial holonomy around the punctures lying in fixed conjugacy classes of U (n) and differ from each other by elements of a weighted Sobolev space; these connections give rise to parabolic bundles in the sense of Mehta and Seshadri. We show in fact that the moduli space of stable parabolic bundles can be identified with our moduli space of HYM connections, by proving that every stable bundle admits a unique unitary gauge orbit of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections.

On a complete non-singular curve defined over the complex number field C, a stable vector bundle is ample if and only if its degree is positive [3]. On a surface, the notion of the H-stability was introduced by F. Takemoto [8] (see § 1). We have a simple numerical sufficient condition for an H-stable vector bundle on a surface S defined over C to be ample; let E be an H-stable vector bundle of rank 2 on S with Δ(E) = c1(E)2 - 4c2(E) ≧ 0, then E is ample if and only if c1(E) > 0 and c2(E) > 0, provided S is an abelian surface, a ruled surface or a hyper-elliptic surface [9]. But the assumption above concerning Δ(E) evidently seems too strong. In this paper, we restrict ourselves to the projective plane P2 and a rational ruled surface Σn defined over an algebraically closed field k of arbitrary characteristic. We shall prove a finer assertion than that of [9] for an H-stable vector bundle of rank 2 to be ample (Theorem 1 and Theorem 3). Examples show that our result is best possible though it is not a necessary condition (see Remark (1) §2).

In [17], Weil studied the space of representations of certain Fuchsian groups as a generalization of Jacobian variety. The theory of stable vector bundles over a curve developed by Mumford, Seshadri and others are the theory of unitary representations of Fuchsian groups. The moduli space of stable vector bundles over a curve is the space of the irreducible unitary representations of a Fuchsian group. The moduli space is studied in detail. Recently Mumford (unpubished) and Takemoto [12] introduced the notion of H-stable vector bundle over a non-singular projective algebraic surface. In this paper, we study the space of the irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental group of a hyperelliptic surface. Our view point is based on the theory of H-stable vector bundles of Takemoto [12] and [13]. We deal only with hyperelliptic surfaces. Our results should be generalized to the vector bundles over some other surfaces (See §3).

Abstract. Let π : X → C be a fibration with integral fibers over a curve C and consider a polarization H on the surface X. Let E be a stable vector bundle of rank 2 on C. We prove that the pullback π*(E) is a H-stable bundle over X. This result allows us to relate the corresponding moduli spaces of stable bundles $${{\mathcal M}_C}(2,d)$$ and $${{\mathcal M}_{X,H}}(2,df,0)$$ through an injective morphism. We study the induced morphism at the level of Brill–Noether loci to construct examples of Brill–Noether loci on fibered surfaces. Results concerning the emptiness of Brill–Noether loci follow as a consequence of a generalization of Clifford’s Theorem for rank two bundles on surfaces.

Abstract Let 𝓔 k denote the set of diffeomorphism classes of closed connected smooth k-manifolds X with the property that for any oriented vector bundle α over X, the Euler class e(α) = 0. We show that if X ∈ 𝓔2n+1 is orientable, then X is a rational homology sphere and π 1(X) is perfect. We also show that 𝓔8 = ∅ and derive additional cohomlogical restrictions on orientable manifolds in 𝓔 k .

AbstractHere we classify the weakly uniform rank two vector bundles on multiprojective spaces. Moreover, we show that every rank r>2 weakly uniform vector bundle with splitting type a1,1=⋯=ar,s=0 is trivial and every rank r>2 uniform vector bundle with splitting type a1>⋯>ar splits.

AbstractFor a 2-category 2C we associate a notion of a principal 2C-bundle. For the 2-category of 2-vector spaces, in the sense of M.M. Kapranov and V.A. Voevodsky, this gives the 2-vector bundles of N.A. Baas, B.I. Dundas and J. Rognes. Our main result says that the geometric nerve of a good 2-category is a classifying space for the associated principal 2-bundles. In the process of proving this we develop powerful machinery which may be useful in further studies of 2-categorical topology. As a corollary we get a new proof of the classification of principal bundles. Another 2-category of 2-vector spaces has been proposed by J.C. Baez and A.S. Crans. A calculation using our main theorem shows that in this case the theory of principal 2-bundles splits, up to concordance, as two copies of ordinary vector bundle theory. When 2C is a cobordism type 2-category we get a new notion of cobordism-bundles which turns out to be classified by the Madsen–Weiss spaces.

We classify irreducible unitary representations of the group of all infinite matrices over a p p -adic field ( p ≠ 2 p\ne 2 ) with integer elements equipped with a natural topology. Any irreducible representation passes through a group G L GL of infinite matrices over a residue ring modulo p k p^k . Irreducible representations of the latter group are induced from finite-dimensional representations of certain open subgroups.

Abstract Given a smooth Hermitian vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ over a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, we study generic properties of unitary connections $\nabla ^{\mathcal{E}}$ on the vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$. First of all, we show that twisted conformal Killing tensors (CKTs) are generically trivial when $\dim (M) \geq 3$, answering an open question of Guillarmou–Paternain–Salo–Uhlmann [ 14]. In negative curvature, it is known that the existence of twisted CKTs is the only obstruction to solving exactly the twisted cohomological equations, which may appear in various geometric problems such as the study of transparent connections. The main result of this paper says that these equations can be generically solved. As a by-product, we also obtain that the induced connection $\nabla ^{\textrm{End}({\operatorname{{\mathcal{E}}}})}$ on the endomorphism bundle $\textrm{End}({\operatorname{{\mathcal{E}}}})$ has generically trivial CKTs as long as $(M,g)$ has no nontrivial CKTs on its trivial line bundle. Eventually, we show that, under the additional assumption that $(M,g)$ is Anosov (i.e., the geodesic flow is Anosov on the unit tangent bundle), the connections are generically opaque, namely that generically there are no non-trivial subbundles of $\mathcal{E}$ that are preserved by parallel transport along geodesics. The proofs rely on the introduction of a new microlocal property for (pseudo)differential operators called operators of uniform divergence type, and on perturbative arguments from spectral theory (especially on the theory of Pollicott–Ruelle resonances in the Anosov case).

Kazhdan, Kostant, Binegar–Zierau and Kobayashi–Ørsted constructed a distinguished infinite-dimensional irreducible unitary representation π of the indefinite orthogonal group G = O(2p, 2q) for p, q ≥ 1 with p + q > 2, which has the smallest Gelfand–Kirillov dimension 2p + 2q - 3 among all infinite-dimensional irreducible unitary representations of G and hence is called the minimal representation. We consider, for which subgroup G′ of G, the restriction π|G′ is multiplicity-free. We prove that the restriction of π to any subgroup containing the direct product group U(p1) × U(p2) × U(q) for p1, p2 ≥ 1 with p1 + p2 = p is multiplicity-free, whereas the restriction to U(p1) × U(p2) × U(q1) × U(q2) for q1, q2 ≥ 1 with q1 + q2 = q has infinite multiplicities.
