On 1980 February 20 we conducted an 8-station intercontental VLBI experiment in order to study the nucleus and jet of M87 at 1666.6 MHz in right circular polarization. Our array was sensitive to structures from 0.001 to 0.1 arcsec. We made a hybrid map of the nucleus of M87, and also searched for compact structures within the knots of the jet. The map (Figure 1) shows that the nucleus of M87 contains a one-sided jet. This morphology is similar to that observed in many compact extragalactic sources. The position angle of the nuclear jet is 290.5 (±1) degrees, which precisely matches that of the 20 arcsec jet. No bending of the jet through an angle greater than about 2 degrees is observed. The nucleus also contains a large component (>0.1 arcsec) which is elongated along the same position angle as the jet and has a flux density of roughly 1 Jy. This component is fully resolved by the vast majority of our (u, v) points, and we could not map it with standard techniques.

ABSTRACT We present results from a circular polarization survey for radio stars in the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS). RACS is a survey of the entire sky south of δ = +41○ being conducted with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope (ASKAP) over a 288 MHz wide band centred on 887.5 MHz. The data we analyse include Stokes I and V polarization products to an RMS sensitivity of 250 μJy PSF−1. We searched RACS for sources with fractional circular polarization above 6 per cent, and after excluding imaging artefacts, polarization leakage, and known pulsars we identified radio emission coincident with 33 known stars. These range from M-dwarfs through to magnetic, chemically peculiar A- and B-type stars. Some of these are well-known radio stars such as YZ CMi and CU Vir, but 23 have no previous radio detections. We report the flux density and derived brightness temperature of these detections and discuss the nature of the radio emission. We also discuss the implications of our results for the population statistics of radio stars in the context of future ASKAP and Square Kilometre Array surveys.

AbstractObservations of linear and circular polarization in five colour bands during a highly active state of VV Puppis in January 86 are reported. A strong linear polarization pulse with the maximum in the blue, PB ≈ 22%, is observed at the end of the bright phase when the active pole is at the limb and a weaker secondary pulse, PB ≈ 7%, is seen in the beginning of the bright phase, when the active pole reappears. Strong positive circular polarization is also observed in the blue and the ultraviolet, РU ≈ PB ≈ 18%, PV ≈ 10% during the bright phase. The circular polarization reverses the sign in the B and V bands during the faint phase and a negative polarization hump is seen when the active pole crosses the limb. The circular polarization in the V band reaches the value PV ≈ −10% at the hump, after which it remains near PV ≈ −5% during the faint phase. This is probably due to radiation coming from the second, less active pole and accretion thus takes place onto both poles. The wavelength dependences of the positive and negative parts of the circular polarization curve are different and no polarization reversal is seen in the U band. The position angle of the linear polarization is well determined during a large portion of the cycle, especially in the V band, thanks to the activity from both poles. A best fit to the position angle curve, taking into account also the duration of the positive circular polarization phase interval ΔΦ = 0.40 (in the V band), yields the values of orbital inclination i = 78° ± 2° and the colatitude of the active magnetic pole ß = 146° ± 2°. The relatively good fit to the position angle data indicates that the simple dipole model is nearly correct in the case of VV Puppis. Some wavelength dependence is, however, seen in the position angle curves, especially in the I band where the slope Δθ/ΔΦ at the main pulse is considerably smaller than in the other bands. The shape of the position angle curves changes also in the blue and the ultraviolet around the middle of the bright phase. This is probably due to optical thickness effects as the side of the accretion column which is toward the observer changes near this phase.

The author and his collaborators have observed NRAO 140 twice at X-ray energies and numerous times with multifrequency VLBI. The VLBI observations reveal a knotty jet structure with superluminal motion of the innermost two knots relative to the core. The VLBI core decreased by about a factor of 2 in flux density between 1980 and late 1984. The X-ray flux also declined by about the same factor during this period. Monitoring at 18 cm during periods of low-frequency variability has revealed pronounced changes in the relative brightnesses of the components of the source while the total flux density has varied by ≲ 10%.

As part of a multi-epoch and multi-wavelength study of the physics of core dominated radio sources we have investigated the occurrence of apparent superluminal motion and other indications for bulk relativistic motion (b.r.m) in a statistically complete, flux density limited (S5GHz ≥ 1Jy) sample of 13 objects with flat radio spectra These sources come from the S5-survey (Kühr et al., 1981) and are optically identified as 7 quasars and 6 BL-Lac objects. They have been observed over a wide range of frequencies, from radio through X-rays (s. Eckart et al., 1986 and references therein). Radiomaps have been obtained at frequencies from 327 MHz to 22.2 GHz with resolutions from arcseconds to 0.2 mas, using the VLA, MERLIN and telescopes of the US- and European-VLBI networks. A recent status report on the VLBI-observations is given by Witzel (1987). In this paper we summarize the results on the direct evidence for b.r.m. in this sample as derived from repeated VLBI-observations at 5 GHz, as well as supporting evidence from SSC-calculations and flux density variability of the 5GHz VLBI core components (Table 1).

We first present spatially resolved ALMA and VLA continuum observations of the early-M red supergiant Antares to search for the presence of a chromosphere at radio wavelengths. We resolve the free-free emission of the Antares atmosphere at 11 unique wavelengths between 0.7 mm (ALMA band 8) and 10 cm (VLA S band). The projected angular diameter is found to continually increase with increasing wavelength, from a low of 50.7 mas at 0.7 mm up to a diameter of 431 mas at 10 cm, which corresponds to 1.35 and 11.6 times the photospheric angular diameter, respectively. All four ALMA measurements show that the shape of the atmosphere is elongated, with a flattening of 15% at a similar position angle. The disk-averaged gas temperature of the atmosphere initially rises from a value of 2700 K at 1.35 R⋆ (i.e., 0.35 R⋆ above the photosphere) to a peak value of 3800 K at ∼2.5 R⋆, after which it then more gradually decreases to 1650 K at 11.6 R⋆. The rise in gas temperature between 1.35 R⋆ and ∼2.5 R⋆ is evidence for a chromospheric temperature rise above the photosphere of a red supergiant. We detect a clear change in the spectral index across the sampled wavelength range, with the flux density Sν ∝ ν1.42 between 0.7 mm and 1.4 cm, which we associate with chromosphere-dominated emission, while the flux density Sν ∝ ν0.8 between 4.3 cm and 10 cm, which we associate with wind-dominated emission. We show that the Antares MOLsphere is transparent at our observed wavelengths, and the lukewarm chromosphere that we detect is therefore real and not just an average of the cool MOLsphere and hot ultraviolet emitting gas. We then perform nonlocal thermal equilibrium modeling of the far-ultraviolet radiation field of another early-M red supergiant, Betelgeuse, and find that an additional hot (i.e., > 7000 K) chromospheric photoionization component with a much smaller filling factor must also exist throughout the chromospheres of these stars.

We present results from VLBI observations of continuum and OH line emission in IRAS 02524+2046 as well as arcsecond-scale radio properties of this galaxy using VLA archive data. We found that there is no significant detection of radio continuum emission from VLBI observations. The arcsecond-scale radio images of this source show no clear extended emission. The total radio flux density at L and C bands are approximately 2.9 mJy and 1.0 mJy, respectively, which indicates a steep radio spectral index between the two bands. A steep spectral index, low brightness temperature, and high q-ratio (i.e., the far-infrared to the radio flux density), which are three critical indicators in the classification of radio activity in the nuclei of galaxies, are all consistent with the classification of this source as a starburst galaxy from its optical spectrum. The high-resolution line profile reveals that we detected both the 1665 MHz and 1667 MHz OH maser lines, which show two and three clear components, respectively. The channel maps show that the maser emission are distributed in a region of ∼210 pc × 90 pc. The detected maser components in different regions indicate similar double spectral features, which might be evidence that this galaxy is at a stage of major merger as seen from the optical morphology.

This paper shows that optical observations of circular polarization produced by aligned interstellar grains could yield valuable information about the grain material. The interstellar medium is known to be linearly dichroic from observations of interstellar linear polarization; many different grain models using a large variety of compositions can be found to reproduce these observations. Since the same aligned grains make the medium linearly birefringent, a small component of circular polarization can result from incident linearly polarized light if the position angle of the linear polarization does not coincide with either principal axis of the medium. Here calculations are presented to demonstrate that the wavelength of the circular polarization is sensitive to the imaginary part of the complex refractive index of the grain material. This provides an opportunity of investigating whether the grains are characteristically dielectric or metallic. Some possible observations are suggested.

After several years of relative quiescence, the flux of BL Lac has increased dramatically at centimeter wavelength, starting about epoch 1979.9 (Fig. 1). We have begun a series of VLBI observations to monitor the milliarcsecond structure at λ6 and λ2.8 cm wavelengths, using a five element VLBI array consisting of telescopes at Bonn, West Germany; Westford, MA; Green Bank, WV; Ft. Davis, TX; and Owens Valley, CA. The first two observations, in 1980 May and September, were at 5 GHz and were not of sufficient resolution to distinguish individual components in the source (Mutel, Phillips and Aller 1981). They did show, however, that the source was highly elongated along position angle ∼ 10° and was expanding that axis with a velocity of ∼4 c. The position angle is the same as several previous VLBI observations of this source, both during quiet periods and during previous flux outbursts (Pearson and Readhead 1981; Shaffer 1978 and references therein).

Polarimetric observations of over 300 pulsars have been carried out between 21 December 1988 and 22 January 1990 at 606, 610, 925, and 1408 MHz using the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. Many of these pulsars have no previously published polarization profiles and will be published shortly (Gould and Lyne 1990). This large data set along with previously published data from various sources, has been used to test the correlation found by Radhakrishnan and Rankin (1990) between sense reversing circular polarization signatures and the accompanying sense of rotation of the linear polarization position angle.
